Dark Souls III Press Event Discussion: Embargo - 8am CST (03/01/)

Fine, mechanically it might be closer to Dark Souls (2) still, but it sure as hell doesn't look like a Dark Souls game, and while I don't know if the actual level design is closer to Dark Souls/Bloodborne in terms of connectivity, it certainly lacks in atmosphere and feels way too similar to Bloodborne. Which I know, a lot of people think was an improvement, but it wasn't. Not only was it too small overall, only a few areas in the game had good atmosphere. The rest was just too samey and the color palette was drab as hell.

Every single time I look at "new" footage of the game, it just screams "recycled from Bloodborne".

LOOKS JUST LIKE BLOODBORNE

You've seen maybe two areas of the game. Calm down with the hyperbole.

As long as the level design is great, I don't really care if the world is interconnected or not. Parts of Bloodborne were connected and other parts weren't and that game is nearly flawless, in my opinion.

Exactly. I think the only reason people worry about wanting it to be interconnected is for speed runs and also for suicide runs so they can dash to get some particular piece of equipment or weapon early on. Otherwise, it really doesn't matter.

You might want to replay Demon's Souls or the first Dark Souls. Dark Souls 2 was also lacking in atmosphere, but it had its moments. Aesthetically, I don't know if it's just because of the engine they are using or what, but this just looks totally off to me. Even if it's using a higher polygon count for everything, it looks much less believable and less worn or lived in. Everything has this really screwed up "straight out of a wax machine" look to it, and the textures make it even more dull.

You can still have a drab pallete while also having variety. Too much of the architecture looks completely fake, or plastic like due to so much of this seemingly monotone shit, or three tone shit going on. The textures do not "pop" and make the world look believeable at all to me. It looks like some kind of playset.

You know what, this isn't worth arguing, you have your opinions and I have mine. I'm really not sure where you're getting any of this from considering these are the most detailed and realistic things From has made with the Souls series. But I'm just going to assume you're seeing what you want to see and if that's the case im not sure why you're bothering to stick with this thread.

It doesn't actually matter too much to me whether or not the world is connected. I was just stating that I don't know if that's how the level design with this game is or not. Although I'm not sure I would agree with your "the only reason" statement, even though those are still valid reasons.

This screenshot excites me so much. Have we ever seen a proper blue sky in any Souls game?

No. Not like that.

I'm definitely not seeing what I want to see. And sure, maybe I am being overly critical too early, but so far the only thing that is really exciting me about this game is the simple fact that "a new Dark Souls" is going to be released. Not the actual footage. It's not like I won't be buying it either, because I fully intend on preordering it. I just do not want so much of what I felt was the inferior entry to the series to so heavily leak over aesthetically. So far (yep, I haven't seen everything) it has been. Even the footage shown from Dark Souls showed off a lot more variety from the start than what's been shown with this game. Lighting and fog plays a huge part in the overall atmosphere in these games (or at least it did with the first two). The games that followed didn't do it nearly as well.

Oh, and here's kind of a blue sky.

You really can't argue with "atmosphere". You might as well just say you dont like the look of the thing, for as subjective and basically pointless the back and forth on that was.

The most atmospheric area was Forbidden Woods, followed by Hemwick. The rest was just "Yharnam 1, Yharnam 2, Yharnam 3" blue, blue, blue, blue, red, blue.

Atmosphere:the pervading tone or mood of a place, situation, or work of art.
"the hotel is famous for its friendly, welcoming atmosphere"
synonyms: ambience, air, mood, feel, feeling, character, tone, tenor, aura, quality, undercurrent, flavor; informalvibe

I think you're confusing atmosphere and color palette.

It´s not easy trying so avoid spoilers but cant resist clicking videos :(
Took a peek at Vaatis videos, holy shit it looks soo good!! So hyped..
How much does he cover of the game in his released videos? Anyways, time to disconnect from internet (well besides GAF) :)

The first area and NPC interactions. But he found a huge spoiler in the third video.

I'm not confusing two at all, but they are very much related. Maybe it's not that Bloodborne didn't have a good atmosphere, it's that the majority of the game was spent in the same atmosphere. After a while it just loses any impact. Even Dark Souls 2 was lacking in a variety of atmosphere more often than not, and the lighting made everything look flatter than it should have, but it still had a bit more than Bloodborne in that regard at least.

You couldn't be more wrong.

Only speedrunners can appreciate incredible level design now?

This is like some Dark Souls of Persia looking shit. I love it and welcome the contrast.

Is that Londor? Those enemies look like the pilgrims you see throughout the game.

I have no idea. I was just reposting it from above. Just that one shot sort of gives me that vibe, but it could be totally different in the game.

Just wanted to 100% confirm you can change the jump controls from stick to Circle, exactly like the option in DkS II. I'm used to the original DkS jump, so that was the first option I changed

I played through Bloodborne with 99% two-handed weapon, which class should i choose in DS3 to play the game like i did in Bloodborne?

(i love BB but didn't like Deamon Souls or DS2, didn't try DS1) but i am so hyped over DS3 =)
How did you level up your character in Bloodborne? What was your main weapon?

I will never understand why people do this. This means you can't roll while running.

I'm having a weird yearning to replay dark souls 2, since I haven't done the DLC. Do the scholar of the first sin 'changes' improve the base game?

if you already beat vanilla i would just play SOTS, idk how much of 'improvement' it is, but it's basically a remix and is worth it if you're going to actually spend the time to play the game again and aren't dead broke

There are new enemy placements and if you are playing on consoles, then the 60fps difference feels amazing.

The DLC greatly improves the game, but I can't say I'm a fan of the new enemy placements.

Cool, at the very least the DLC sounds great and SOTFS is pretty cheap on Amazon, so I'll get that to hold off the dark souls 3 hunger.

Scholar of the First Sin is fantastic. The new enemy placement just makes more "sense". The game world just feels more dynamic, and there are far better, earlier ways to get some of the items necessary to explore some of the later areas. It just opens it up in beautiful fashion.

Good lord the DLC. It has some of the best bosses in Souls. Straight up. Each of the DLC areas are intricate, lore heavy, beautiful as hell. Phenomenal stuff. Dark Souls II is a 9 out of 10 "game". It's a 7 out of 10 on the "Souls" scale, and SotFS makes it an 8.

You won't regret it. Just rerolled a pure mage, and a bandit build, and am doing the two characters at once. Because I can.

I had the same yearning a week back so I picked up SOTFS on Steam.
I wasn't much of a fan of the vanilla game and I gotta say not much has changed.

I looks and runs far better but the changes they have made are not what DS is all about imo.
Randomly placed enemies are more difficult than the actual bosses for me.
Saying this, I haven't got to the DLC yet. I prey it injects some more enjoyment for myself.
It has high ratings from ppl who had the same thoughts about DS2.

I treat DS2 as Dark Souls VR Missions.

For Dark Souls weight burden does the weight only include what weapons you are currently wielding or everything on you that you can swiftly switch to?

It's fine if you don't understand the appeal of something, but you might want to avoid embarrassing yourself by theorycrafting why other people do.
