dat speedrun... wow

Is the +/- 12 levels verified?

A friend and myself co-op'd the other day and I swear I had 15+ levels on him. It took a while for us to connect, but we eventually figured out a few things to make it happen.

Quick edit: Also, I asked this last night and no one had any tips. The crystal caves... any specific weapon type work well in there? My lightning spear and drake sword + 2 both barely scratch those guys.

So From released some patch notes today:

http://darksouls.fromsoftware.jp/online/

I have no idea what any of this says, but someone ran it through Google translator and this came out:

Didn't see this until just a moment ago. I'll translate the planned patch notes:

(Btw, it seems they have edited the patch details since they first posted it)

- Fixes for several effects of various magic spells (Magic Shield, Great Magic Shield, Tranquil Walk of Peace, Fog Ring, etc).

- Infinite Magic and Item bug exploit fix.

- Balance tuning for elemental weapons and stat scaling weapons.

- Tuning of the matchmaking conditions.

- Fixes for problems while loading in new areas during map changes.

These are the planned updates for 1.04 for the PS3 game. Since there is no Xbox360 release in Japan, From Software does not provide any support or information about the Xbox360 version. There is currently no date for the release of the patch yet, but it should be within this month.

Hopefully, they fix the fog ring so you can lock on, have the Gravelord Covenant actually do something and make invading for Blade of Darkmoon actually work.

Sorry, it's not silent footsteps that they're fixing, but Tranquil Walk of Peace. As for the other stuff mentioned, an earlier update on the site specifically mentions the Fog Ring lock-on as what they're fixing. I'm not sure why they removed that comment and made it a more general one instead.

johntown said:
That does not work quite like you think. Someone who has a scale has summon you to fight......there is no invasion.
is that what it is? saw a few signs like these and been trying to summon them lol

It really saddens me that they need to change things about the game like weapon stat scaling... that sort of thing should have been taken care of before launch. I totally agree that it should be different, but I feel like at this point, that's how the game is, and shouldn't be changed.

On a more positive note, this is definitely my favorite current-gen game (excluding Wii games), I've put in 114 hours so far, and don't see myself putting this game down for a long time to come.

Why not? I feel that balance issues are something which should definitely be patched once the player community has gotten a feel of the game systems and have a strong feedback about it. Especially in a game with a ton of different weapon types and various styles of stat scaling, it is important that stuff are relatively balanced within a certain tier of weapons.

Balance patching is the most common form of long-term gameplay improvements which get patches throughout the lifespan of RPGs. This is nothing new.

Whoot! Saw my first summon last night! Oh god that was crazy cool! I was on my way to fight the buttefly. I died fighting it earlier, so to save time, I sprinted past the annoying Stone Giants. There I saw it! At the bottom of the stairs, a golden sign!

I almost shat myself! I can finally play with someone! The problem started after I summoned the person. For starters, she just followed me. Like If I stopped, she would aswell. Thinking it's ok, I tried to gesture to her that we're going to fight the Butterfly. After not getting any response, I assumed the person playing is just ignoring me. Oh well I though, so I ran into the fog, sure enough the girl followed. She was a caster and went apeshit on the butterfly. Once the boss died, she vanished!

Elated I went to check on the wiki on what I can use the soul for. Only to find out I summoned a fucking NPC ... Fuck this game sometimes :<

This is great news but I hope they don't nerf lightning weapons before I finish the game for the first time!

Yeah I don't think nerfing lightning weapons is the answer (unless it's simply nerfed to be slightly less superior to all other elemental type damage). Instead the answer should be to increase the scaling bonus you get from stat weapons, to give more value to someone who has pumped in a few dozen points into a stat! Like me! Loooooool. :(

It's still their game though isn't it? Who is going to provide support for the 360 version?

I dunno. They could be. I just have no information about that, so I'm making it clear that these updates they provide only apply to the PS3 version for now. Scamco sucks at communicating with customers. :(

Indeed. That would benefit me greatly as well since I am basically a STR/DEX build warrior running around with a Lightning Iaito +4 as my primary weapon solely because of the fact that stat scaling is wonky.

I think when I pick the game up again tonight I'll just keep leveling my DEX and hope that the patch rewards me for it. Now I just need to find a weapon worth getting to +15...

weapon stat scaling I'm in two minds about. On the one hand, I focused on pumping my DEX early in the game. but when I heard about the lightning spear I backed off and switched to levelling Endurance. I want my overpowered lightning spear like other people got!

I completed Demon Souls and loved it, is Dark Souls that much harder or unforgiving? I ask as I want to play it, but due to having less time gaming nowadays and with so much I want to play will I still get the most out of it?

Yeah I think they'll do it by just increasing the scaling on STR/DEX weapons instead of nerfing the elementals or magic scaling weaps. Though I wouldn't mind it so much if they also nerfed elemental weaps a bit since those can end up perhaps too powerful, at least for NG.

Feels like something should also be done about the Crystal Ring Shield. That thing's potential attack power is too monstrous. :P

I'm just still stuck in an age where you buy a game, and that game you buy never changes. Now whenever someone does a speedrun, they'll have to specify which version they did it on, and if you replay the game, it will be a slightly different experience. For whatever reason, that bothers me. But again, what mainly bothers me is the stat scaling thing; they knew when they made the game that they were overpowering lightning and fire weapons, and decided to make that choice. I disagree with the choice, but it seems odd that they are going back and basically changing their minds. But if it makes my Furysword better, I guess I shouldn't complain.

Long story short, I feel like the fact that patching exists now in console games gives developers an excuse to push out an unpolished product. I know this sentiment has been expressed many times before, but this has never really affected me, as almost all of the games I buy on launch are Nintendo games. I'm also annoyed that this patch will likely come out after I've put in my 200 hours with the game, and will possibly never play it again. That'll teach me to buy games at launch, I guess (yeah, I'm overreacting, but this sort of thing does bug me).

Wait, what exactly are they doing to stat scaling?

All we have is this from the patch notes:
Balance tuning for elemental weapons and stat scaling weapons.
I'm assuming they are just going to increase the stat bonuses from STR and DEX and leave elemental weapons alone, like Zeliard mentioned.

I've seen people say this a lot, but I do pitiful damage with it... how exactly is damage calculated for this?

Yoshichan said:

None of us knows yet. But obviously, the weapons with A+ scaling should be better to wear and do more damage on a str-heavy char than the same weapon with lighting damage enchantment instead :P

Yoshichan said:

We don't know the specifics yet, but they're obviously doing something about it after every single player told them that stat scaling weapons are basically worthless in the game compared to elemental weapons.

Well that's a good change then, elemental weapons shouldn't be better than a weapon with A-scaling.

i would like to kill the fire keeper at anord londo, can i teleport there after his death?

nothing about the bug of ng+ difficulty on your first run? :(

Equip the shield in the left hand and your most powerful weapon in your right hand, then use the shield's L2 attack. Crystal Ring Shield is largely dependent on whatever is equipped in your right hand. One of the wikis says it doubles the attack power.

Whatever the case, you do enormous damage with it. It's also long range and the attack just knocks off a trivial bit of durability. It's basically the Drake Sword for the second part of the game.

That sounds like too much trouble. Sorry
Undead Merchant...

Of course the reason why I'm wondering this is because I'm going to need a decent replacement for my Lightning Iaito if DEX scaling gets increased. :)

Which age was this? I've been playing games for over 20 years, and as far as I can remember, I've always been glad when issues with a game could be fixes. It isn't always possible because of the platform, but the inability to fix problems was never seen as a good thing, ever.

In the past, before you could patch games, games still had fixes done on them in subsequent pressings. It just meant that anyone who bought the initial pressing ended up with a buggier game than someone who bought it after it was fixed. Since the internet didn't exist as it does today back then, some of these things were much less obvious to the player, but they were still happening.

No, I'm surprised they didn't mention it either. It could still be fixed when the actual patch is out, but yeah, it's something to be concerned about especially since more and more people will be getting into NG+ as time goes by, and they'll be more and more likely to invade people who are not in NG+.

I made a lot of progress yesterday. Was at Blighttown, now at Anor Londo. Got to there, killed huge knights with ease, then was eaten by a mimic. :(

Doesn't change the fact that you could buy a game just 6 years ago for a platform that was largely offline and your game would never change. He just misses those days, and I agree with him.

I got it that way too..

I went the magic route with it, which was probably a mistake since I'm a high dex/end build. I can always revert it so.

I'm confused about all this stat scaling stuff. I have my end at 40, and know it stops adding to stamina at that point... But, why is it at 33, my dex no longer adds damage?

Sorry, I still don't get it. If he never wants the game to change, he can delete all the patches, and just play the game offline. What is stopping him from doing that? Once you engage in an online game, you are part of a community, and by not improving a game and balancing things to that community's needs, the developers would be neglecting the people who are actually invested into the sort of the game it is.

I don't think I have ever seen someone complain about a company supporting their game after it was released. I have heard complaints about the patch itself... but never about the fact that it was being patched. FROM could have laughed all the way to bank but they're instead addressing some of the concerns of their players. I have to admit I didn't really expect this to happen for a console title.

As far as the fog ring and twop... the only people who are complaining about those changes must have been the people who were abusing them. :P
