Dark Souls: Prepare to Die Edition GamesCom trailer [update: new screens]

Who says they had the time, resources, or will to put in extra work to make it anything more than it is? Who says they have to? Who says they wanted to? Same goes for buying it. But it is available for folks who wanted it on PC.

I'm guessing you don't ever play games on consoles? Or do most console games give you headaches?
I play my PS3 from my couch, a few meters away, on a SDTV, and it's decent enough. Trying to read text a bitch, though, but I can't comment on how HDTVs scale compared to monitors, because I don't have one. On the other hand, I have played many upscaled games on my PC and more often than not it looks like ass.

I don't want FROM to go bankrupt as a result of this, I just want them to patch it.

Resolution options and lack of a FPS lock aren't required by law, but they're some of the most basic things to be expected to be implemented by any respectable developer.

Yes, let's hope the people responsible for making one of the best games this generation lose their jobs.

I meant Bamco, and I didn't say I hoped anyone loses their job. But when sales are shIt and a company blames everything but itself, it's pretty funny.

So master race people who wish ill will on the PC port, any chance you could go back in time and not bother with the petition so that I can gladly pay for the console DLC and play it in August rather than "Winter?"

Thanks.

It's not my job to get them to get me to want to give them money. The best thing we can do is let this port bomb and laugh at them when they go out of business for being bad at their job.

Lol you suck dude. Pc gamers begging for a dark souls pc version...scamco in a crazy move decides ok lets give it a chance. Within a few months dks pc version is here..barebones as it is but probably very much playable and enjoyable and you are wishing From goes out of business? Be glad to even get this game on pc..barebones and under standard as it is. This game is still one of the best games this gen ill bet that if it sells well and you keep voicing concerns From can turn it around for the sequel.

Nobody begged for this a Namco community manager was like i heard you guys might be interested for this on PC, you guys should make a petition or something. I don't want From to go out of business at all, I just want the sycophantic fans to get it through their thick skulls that the port is unacceptable on PC.

If you can play PS3 on an SDTV, which frankly sounds pretty gross to me, you should be able to handle Dark Souls on a PC monitor without getting a headache :P I play it on a 23 inch 1080p monitor. I hope they patch it too, of course.

The options available in this port might be unacceptable but if its perfectly playable and perhaps even better than on consoles i dont see. unacceptable. There have been plenty buggy glitchy ass Pc games developed only for pc.

Way to backtrack, lol. Get lost.
Stop reading things that aren't there.

People defending FROM's decision to butcher the port for the sake of "equality" are the worst. Before it had to be some technical issue that caused the lock, but we find out otherwise and it's still ok? Signing whatever petitions you want to and spamming their inboxes with complaints of how the port's been handled don't mean a thing if you still turn around and pay them for fucking you in the ass.

I don't get the hate from PC gamers. Yeah, there are some technical issues like the FPS and framerate lock and thats unfortunate. But Dark Souls is my favorite game of all time and one of the best games ever made. If the PC port is "only" as good as the console version with some added bonus content and a $40 price tag, that's a really good deal.

Shit smeared graphics are unacceptable on PC, and you need some high end PC to run it and it still chugs unacceptable. Those buggy games on PC you speak of don't have a locked frame buffer...

A lot of us can take a barebones port. Dark Souls PC isn't a barebones port. It's missing a feature that, literally, no other pc game doesn't have. None. It's not even a feature, its something as basic as analog stick support (relatively).

Adore the game, but the PC version is seriously, seriously lacking. THAT, is a understatement. I've preordered it though. So I'll be a guinea pig for the rest of GAF.

Why not get it for a console at that point? Buying the PC version is supposed to have the benefits of, you know, a PC game.

so what resolution is the game capped at? I know its 30fps capped but what else? I was thinking of possibly getting this for 30 bucks

Cheaper than $60 and the $15 dollar DLC?

to be completely fair you can get dark souls for like 20-30 bucks on the ps3.

Cheaper than $60 and the $15 dollar DLC?

Dark Souls can be found for less than $60 on consoles now. So yeah....try to make a better argument.

Amazon lists the PS3 version at $22.35 as of this post, and if you still add the DLC...you're still saving money.

The reason people wanted to play the game on PC to begin with is to play at an HD resolution and at a higher framerate. All of that is lost now.

Besides, I would have liked that awesome collectors edition but good luck getting that in North America. Hopefully the ps3/360 PTD release has special editions for NA (but someone alluded in this thread that might be a pipe dream).

So the ps3 version also has shit smeared graphics?

Used or new?

I don't see why I need to make an argument. It's a great game that everyone should play. It's as simple as that.

Dark Souls is $30 new on console. So, a savings of $5 if you didn't already have it from last year.

Anyway, that's besides the point. There are standards that come with PC games nowadays and lazy ports like this deserve to get criticized.

Why can't you understand that the hate is towards the handling of the port, not the game itself. No, it's not as simple as that.

I doubt it's the actual reason but if they intentionally crippled the PC port to maintain parity between platforms, it would be much much worse than pretty much any other reason I could possibly imagine.

Probably because people are throwing their hands up saying the game isn't worth playing because of the frame rate and resolution locks. The console version had worse frame rate and it was still a god tier game.

You guys don't understand, it's really not the lack of options at this point so much as the complete lack of any fuck given by Bamco toward the pc audience. They literally did as little as they could get away with and it shows. I sympathize with FROM for likely being forced into developing a pc version they were uncomfortable attempting, but Bamco not outsourcing it to a capable developer tells me they couldn't care less, and neither pc gamers nor FROM deserve that.

If those people want to make a statement by not purchasing the product, then so be it. Having standards when it comes to PC games isn't outrageous.

For anyone in this thread dissatisfied by the the visuals of the PC version, this petition exists to make your feelings known in an organized manner.

Too little too late, I imagine. I can only fathom Namco put this out quickly to capitalize on wanting PC gamers, and it being put out rather quickly to offer a temporary incentive over the console version. If the new content came out on PC after it did on consoles, I'm sure a lot of double dippers wouldn't even touching the PC release, as its biggest hook to me is the new content. You would be left with mostly people who probably don't own two of the platforms the game is already on, available at a much cheaper price.

It was pretty unbearable until I switched from composite to component, but now it's ok, though I main PC and I play PC a lot closer than I do console, and like everybody knows, that's a big factor. In any case, by my own testing: PS3 on a 27" SDTV with component cables is better than 1024x768 on my 24" 1920x1200 monitor. I'm pretty sure I'll manage to tolerate it (headaches notwithstanding), but really, it's not what I had in mind when I signed that petition...

The fact that you would be able to look past something does not lower the value of that something for everyone else.

Look, the 1024x720 framebuffer presents a more than justifiable excuse to say, "they don't deserve my money". If someone's feeling follow that route, there's no logic which runs contrary.

No one is attacking the gameplay.

I doubt it's the actual reason but if they intentionally crippled the PC port to maintain parity between platforms, it would be much much worse than pretty much any other reason I could possibly imagine.

I'm going to assume Destructoid got that verbatim from some PR person.

Yeah honestly if the game didn't have these two issues (and GFWL) it would of been bought day 1. But instead I'll go play games in my backlog and buy it whenever its on sale on steam.

I'm just not understanding how a port that honestly is better than the already amazing console version falls below someone's "standards". It's a great game, even if it only has 30 fps. At the end of the day, that should be the final answer.

With GFWL, a locked 30 fps framerate and a locked 1024 x 720 render resolution it is literally the worst PC port that I am familiar with.

30fps is easier to tolerate when the display doesn't take up a lot of your vision. Same goes for lower resolutions. If the port remains in this condition I would actually prefer to play this one on the consoles.

Trade amounts with people, mule them, BB glitch them, blah blah. It really doesn't take long. You can get 11 or so in one playthrough then BB glitch them in under 30 minutes to get 99.

Even if you started fresh with the Divine Blessings gift on a new account and BB glitched from that, it would take like under 5 hours to get 99. 5 hours is a long time, but nothing considering the effect it has on pvp.

There isn't much of a difference. People will mule/dupe in Dark Souls with or without it. They did in Demons. They will in the next game. All the glitches do right now is allow people do it by themselves without mule begging.

Divine Blessings were a bad concept to start with, and one sign that From doesn't consider pvp to be the sole factor in design. The best "fix" they could do would be simply to add a second or two delay on the blessing, and rework the both the Dragonhead, and weapon swap mechanics so it doesn't allow for non-intentional buffing.

Mort, do you play PC games?

Also, amazing console version? Lost Izalith, Blighttown, and New Londo were amazing in a way, sure.

Without gfwl its still better than console versions which are beyond amazing tho.

Eusis DeS indeed looks much better with the higher res but also has way less effects etc going on I think or less under the hood. Shit smeared is taking it pretty far..its no wii game.

The console version performance is not "amazing" by any stretch of that word and I've put ~120hrs into it.

It's so sad that FROM has amazing artist and level designers but mediocre programmers at best (and that's not even taking into consideration the soon to be garbage pc port)

And yeah, I wasn't talking about the performance, just to clarify.

I wouldn't use the world literally in that sentence. Didn't From Dust control with analog only and no mouse support, and locked at 30fps? I remember a few things like this happening in the past few years. I'd say something with fucked up controls is worse than locked framerate and res.

Didn't Dead Space have weird control issues too?

The quality of the game is not enough to get away with a disaster of a port. Even Japanese gamers didn't tolerate the crap they got feeded when they purchased Bayonetta PS3, in fact the 360 version is the multiplatform simultaneous release with the best ratio against PS3, and we're talking of a console vs console scenario. PC can do so much more and we've seen cheaper ports being absolutely fantastic. There is no excuse, it's not a matter of standards because saying this port is fine means having no standards, that anything goes in the business.

Missed that earlier post. Yeah, it's stuff like that which makes "worst PC port" pretty bullshit, though at least this is appended with "I am familiar with" so, hey, maybe it really would fall apart entirely upon digging up some truly wretched (or at least apathetic) ports.

Also, From Dust lacks V-Sync as I recall. Locked at 30 FPS but not V-Synced, what the fuck.

Even with the technical issues, it's one of the best games ever made.

I'm not arguing it's a bad game; no one here is. As it stands, the PC version is a slightly better port of a technically faulty game.

You avoided my question, do you play PC games?
