Dark Souls: Prepare to Die Edition GamesCom trailer [update: new screens]

The quality of the game is not enough to get away with a disaster of a port.

When I think "disaster of a port", I think of something literally unplayable due to crashing and bugs or at least significantly hurt by them. If that was the case I would understand the outrage.

And I do play PC games. I'm not super huge into them, but I play them.

Well given FROM's documented unfamiliarity and admitted trouble with the platform, it could be unplayable at launch. We don't know at this point.

We're talking about a platform that makes Wii games looking like 360 ones possible, such a port on this platform in the year 2012 is what I call appalling, ugly, bad, I'd rather go in denial and play the PS3 version because at least it's hardware-constrained.

Without gfwl its still better than console versions which are beyond amazing tho.

I played it and loved it despite major performance issues on PS3. There was so much hope that the amazing but flawed game could have the majority of it's issues solved with modern hardware. They took that potential and somehow manage to squander it almost completely by going out of their way to prevent the additional horsepower from actually being used. It really is heart breaking. This was my most anticipated game this year before the state of the port was made clear. A game that I played for over a hundred hours and beat multiple times less than a year ago was the game I was looking forward most this year just because of the potential performance gains that the PC offers that the game desperately needed.

I wouldn't use the world literally in that sentence. Didn't From Dust control with analog only and no mouse support, and locked at 30fps? I remember a few things like this happening in the past few years. I'd say something with fucked up controls is worse than locked framerate and res.

Didn't Dead Space have weird control issues too?
Yeah, since From Dust is such a strong challenger for worst port ever, Dark Souls has at least reasonable doubt.

Dead Space was acceptable though, untoggleable mouse acceleration was dreadful, yeah, but the game looked and ran great. Dead Space being a game in which atmosphere is key (as is Dark Souls), meant you could stand the laggy mouse controls because at least you could have a great atmosphere experience.

Then play the PS3 version. I'm sure you'll love it.

Easily one of the best games ever. Personally I'd play it at 480P, it's that good. If you haven't played it, you really should, on any platform you can. It's nice that it's available on PC, and it sucks that it's not better.

My thoughts exactly.

Missed that earlier post. Yeah, it's stuff like that which makes "worst PC port" pretty bullshit, though at least this is appended with "I am familiar with" so, hey, maybe it really would fall apart entirely upon digging up some truly wretched (or at least apathetic) ports.

Also, From Dust lacks V-Sync as I recall. Locked at 30 FPS but not V-Synced, what the fuck.

I'm honestly not familiar with From Dust's PC port. It does sound like it gives Dark Souls a run for it's money. As for Dead Space, it isn't in the same league. It had mouse control issues which made it a poor port but the issue was solved with a controller and disabling in game vsync. Outside of the mouse issues the port was a typical port.

Even with the technical issues, it's one of the best games ever made.

I've played the Xbox360 version, and it's just not that good to get a pass for the shitty condition of the port. People skipping it is totally understandable imo.

Dead Space was about par for a modern console port honestly, a few kb/m annoyances but can look and run great simply through the higher resolution and FPS.

Now, if you want a better example of a bad modern PC port look at Saints Row 2. Simply not worth playing without Gentlemen of the Row unless you're stupidly tolerant of problems and even minor issues like failing to have proper button labeling, and even with Gentlemen of the Row you can't easily get the game running at 100% speed on Vista/7, it'll be either over or under 100% unless you use a tool that requires in game testing and manual timing.

Everyone's got different tastes, which cuts both ways. Some people might be idiots missing out on what could be their favorite game ever, while others likely wouldn't have been that seriously into it. To be honest, I think many of the most outraged and are PC-only are PROBABLY going to end up in the latter camp, I do feel part of the appeal for Dark Souls is for people who were fans of Zelda and Metroid a decade or two in the past and someone more adamantly PC-only is probably more likely to be much more divergent from that in tastes.

Found a recent preview on the PC edition, doesn't sound so good.

What was much more of a problem was the performance, which was lacking to the point of skipping frames even though it was running at only medium detail, non-extreme resolutions on beefy Alienware gaming laptops.

Another one at gamespy, sounds positive but this guy might not know what upscaling is

Turns out those reports about it running only in 720p were false, because I was able to set the resolution to 1920 x 1080 no problem at all. Also, there are antialiasing options but it's unclear how many levels of AA it actually is since all I could do is turn it on or off. And although keyboard and mouse support was not set up for this demo (I played with a gamepad), I did find out that we could rebind our keys. So we've got that going for us at least.

Good thing the Saint's Row 3 port was so good, at least it was for me.

And yeah, I wasn't talking about the performance, just to clarify.

Oh great, this literal same argument from the other thread spread here. People just don't understand PC gaming and the choices it gives.

And I do play PC games. I'm not super huge into them, but I play them.

My point.

No one questions the quality of this title, as I personally think it is one of the best of the last 6 years. I loved it start to finish. It's great.

It's also a shitty port job.

This is a road down which we should really not lead this thread.

True, everyone's got different reasons for preferring one platform or set of platforms over the other, especially with how the console landscape has changed from the 90s. And it's probably a general truth that if you'll be THAT angry over the port quality it probably says something about your interest in the game if you didn't already own it.

Yep I had some credits on my account, every time GMG does a free game I scoop it up. Gives you a few dollars off here and there.

I need to do this. I forget about GMG and tend to only notice them when they have some flantastic deals(Hitman, Deus Ex, :etc)

Definition of Flantastic: When something is so amazing, that it rivals the consistency of Flan. In theory.

If the game's as smeary as it looks in the pics, I'll probably run this through a scanline generator.

I want the stable frame rate pretty bad. Hopefully it doesn't skip, as one article pointed out.

That being said, I have hope people will be able to patch it themselves. There's some pretty clever folks out there.

Upscaling quality on those screens is indeed terrible. Hooray for GPU scaling! Though I'll probably play it in a window anyway, easier to alt tab to the wiki :3

Yeah, my hopes that a mod will unlock the resolution and possibly the framerate are slowly slipping away. If the game struggles to maintain 30 fps at 1024x720, imagine how it will play at 1920x1200.

There's a chance this is why the resolution was locked in the first place. Maybe even bleeding edge rigs get massive slowdowns at high native resolutions (1080p+)

Those performance reports really have me worried...

It's not news either. Every time I read it, I cringe though. Day none. Until the issues are fixed by From themselves. Not the community. Or until it's 10 on sale.

Them pics in the OP could be amazing if not for knowing the compromises made in this shoddy port.

This marginalization is not fair to people who are genuinely disappointed.

I don't think very many people who pushed for Dark Souls to be released on PC, did so just so they could thumb their noses, shit on it, then not buy it.

Here's my personal feelings:

It's an amazing game. One of the best this generation. But they've put me in the position where, to experience this, I have to pay $40 while accepting that the resolution is only rendering at 1024x720 yet it will be dip below 30fps despite the strength of my hardware, and regardless of how I modify the limited settings and resolution options they offer. Oh and keep in mind that no other game released in the last I don't know how long has asked this of me, not a single one. Meanwhile, my merit as a gamer is being called into question, because I am considering anything but immediately paying that $40. Yes, you see, only an elitist PC gamer snob wouldn't leap at the opportunity to reward FROM despite the amount of effort which has been applied to this port. Finally, I feel pressured by that "Capcom factor", knowing that if the PC port has poor launch window sales, the chance of getting the next games on the platform shrinks significantly. So I almost have to buy, as an investment in the future? Damn.

So I can understand why others who they've put between this rock and hard place are also quite upset. It's amazing from a gameplay perspective, and that fact is what makes it so hard to swallow that they've done an incredibly shit job of delivering this port to us, from a technical perspective. So I should just grit my teeth and bear it? I'm not yet sure that's a possibility. Do I deserve some slack?

I agree with this 100%. Expectations for the port for most people were relatively low yet they some how managed to go well below those expectations by cuttings corners no one imagined would ever be considered. They are offering a rather hard pill to swallow, especially at $40.

The fuck, I am assuming the bolded part is rhetorical?

I have to quote myself from the other thread.

I don't agree to support this because it sets a bad precedent, this game is not exempt from it just because some of you deem it the second coming of Jesus.

Read the rest of his post? He's saying he's cast as a PC elitist if he doesn't buy it for 40$, not the other way around...

I did, see kids reading an posting bleary eyed is not good. Need some coffee you caught me before I edited my post, so I changed it back.

So i played it today on gamescom. Dont feel like typing a whole review because im kinda tired. bottom line for me:

- kb + mouse plays ok (gonna stick with joypad tho)
- fps is good (capped at 30 fps but stable were i played it)
- gfx are the same as on PS3 and for me that is a good thing because i already played it on ps3.

Basicly its the same game with better fps. To bad that the reso cant be upped, but for me its good enough.

Good night.

Did you see the specs of the demo machine by any chance?

Did you play it in a small 15" laptop screen?

It was a high end Alienware rig I presume.

I'm pretty happy with the impressions that I've heard from people who have played it at Gamescom today, was hoping to hear the resolution thing wasn't true but at least there's lots of reports of a stable framerate and the new content sounds awesome. It's nice to hear some positivity among all of the whining.

I'm one of the bigger graphics snobs on GAF, as many can attest to. Even with the shit state of this port, I still say it's absolutely worth getting if you haven't played Dark Souls. It's easily one of the best games released this generation, and was completelely worth playing even on the consoles, where it could barely manage 30fps most of the time, even dropping to ~10fps in Blighttown. Despite all that, it still remains my favorite console game of the generation. I will rebuy it for the stable framerate alone. It's that good.

Besides being the best console this generation, I totally agree with this. I'm buying it for the improved framerate and DLC primarily myself.

Bumping this thread hoping that we'll get an OT soon, so the three of us that are excited about the PC release can talk about it :)

Some people are already getting the physical version, I think they can't play it yet because of ZDP.
