Is the OT going up tonight?
Can't wait for this. Got the day off work Friday. B)
Guess it'll go up later Wednesday.
I was gonna ask you what the hell you were smoking, since I couldn't see Dark Souls in the top 20 but I now realize Dark Souls got taken down in my country for some reason (GFWL most likely, since we don't have Arkham City or SFIV in Argentina either...).Currently the #3 top seller on Steam.
I think if you have a decent PC it's going to be the best experience of the game. I don't see how it could be any worse than the consoles.I'm sad they fucked this release up so bad because it's going to mar the experience for Dark Souls nubs.
What could have been.

We're both just speculating, though. We'll see on Thursday.

Clearly, but I'm not sure how that relates to your point that getting the best Dark Souls experience as a first-timer is somehow worse, as you implied. The PC version is always the best experience, but this could have been much better than what we're getting.
Where do you see this?
? He said "what could've been". And in any case, since PC gamers have certain set-in-stone standards that DS may not fulfill, so the fact that it's the best version doesn't matter as much as it would if they would just meet those requirements, which are pretty low in the first place. It doesn't make the game worse than its console counterpart, but it makes it marginally less appealing as you have dozens of other games in your Steam backlog that do the bare minimum that DS for some weird reason of destiny doesn't. Even the Expendables game lets you change its internal framebuffer resolution.Clearly, but I'm not sure how that relates to your point that getting the best Dark Souls experience as a first-timer is somehow worse, as you implied.

Exactly the argument I'm trying to make.I haven't seen anything pointing towards this port being any different from the console releases, aside from more content and possibly a steadier frame rate. How exactly is it going to ruin the experience for newcomers?
---------------------
Exactly the argument I'm trying to make.
I guess it's all a matter of perspective. I'm a PC gamer primarily (which is why I haven't played Dark Souls yet) and I'm looking forward to playing a game I've wanted to play for a while in the best way possible.Being able to change the resolution of a game is pretty fundamental for pc gamers. So a dark souls newbie playing on the pc will have their experience marred because they will be pissed about the resolution situation. And rightfully so! Namco couldnt even get the basic exceptions for a pc port right.
the whole situation has me torn. I really want the game bit I don't want to support shitty pc ports.

So for most PC gamers that have standard expectations from a 2012 PC game, this might be almost worse than the console version, though saved because the console version is already pretty poor.
Now it's just a matter of seeing how tolerable it is to play the game upscaled. I remain hopeful, though not much.
(mind you I'm not talking about gameplay for a second here, if DS is half as good as Demon's it'll be already better than most my Steam games)
My Thursday will be spent playing Dark Souls with the GAF OT open on my 2nd monitor. I can't wait to read the drama. This is the issue for me as well, and it's entirely Bamco's/From's fault for putting so many potential customers in this dilemma. Say what you will about how good/bad the port is or if it is better/worse than the console versions, if Dark Souls is successful on PC, it will set the bar extremely low, at least in regards to the more technical side of gaming.
Darksiders II has already caused a bit of controversy with its PC port, which is no surprise given the quality of the first Darksiders game on PC. I'm very interested to see what's going to happen when people finally get their hands on Dark Souls.
I guess it's all a matter of perspective. I'm a PC gamer primarily (which is why I haven't played Dark Souls yet) and I'm looking forward to playing a game I've wanted to play for a while in the best way possible.
But I also see where you're coming from as well. I don't think I've ever played a modern PC game that I couldn't even change the resolution in. And I have PC hardware powerful enough that I can max any game with a minimum of 60fps, so being locked at 30 will be pretty jarring for me.
But in the end, I still want to play the game and it wouldn't be any better on consoles, so I'm going to play it on my PC.
Hey guys, how about you just support good games? Dark Souls on PS3 was fantastic. The PC version is better than the PS3 version, has more content, and costs $20 less. Why not just enjoy a great game?

Most of my posts in this thread have been defending the Dark Souls PC port (barely and with serious reservations), but I seriously have a really, really hard time understanding how you could possibly COMMEND them for it.I'm curious.. if this locked frame buffer res issue wasn't previously mentioned.. how many would have been so hung ho anti this port.. I mean you choose your screen res and the ui is scaled/positioned appropriately but the render res stays the same.. many people may notice, but how many would have cared at that point to go and rant about no game ever has done this, oh the humanity why?
As for the locked 30 frames.. this is less forgivable and more people will notice, then again, a lot wouldn't..a few would have come out and gone, that's a bit shit, and looked for ways around it, or otherwise ask for a patch at that point..
A publisher has actually been upfront about details for once, for possibly the first time ever, and though the game will still be best of class in comparison to other systems, people go off ranting and raving screaming about how much they've been personally done in, as though namco came and killed their cat, cancelled Xmas , and then reinstated Xmas, given them a cat.. then killed it and took away Xmas again!
Those of us who actually wanted dark souls on PC, now have a dark souls on PC.. its the best version, has the dlc included in the base price, and allows people without consoles to experience what people have been saying is one of the best games in recent time. And that ain't a bad thing.

- pre-historic standard of a PC-port with sub-HD framebuffer and locked (?) 30fps
- constant fear of losing savegames thanks to GFWL
- almost $10 more expensive in Europe than NA
Buying this port mean I support lazy and shitty ports on PC,and doing this will encourage other publishers of throwing us more port that don't even hit or meet the standards of 2003 or taking advantage of our modern PC,and also mean that I am ok with a crappy client that didn't get updated for over a year now,it will be like a snow ball.

Both points have merit. You support both risk-taking and a sub-standard port.Do you genuinely believe that buying this game would support ports that don't meet the standards of games released in 2003? Isn't it more rational that, under the conditions this game was ported under, you'd be supporting a developer taking a risk and developing for a platform that they originally had no intent on supporting?
I'm also on the side of GfWL not being anywhere near as bad as people make it out to be. I've never once had an issue. On first launch you log in, and then every launch from then on it does everything itself. Steamworks only would be preferred for me, but GfWL definitely isn't a deal breaker.

And your first point doesn't really discount that it's the best version of a fantastic game, regardless of platform.
For the third one, that's just the way this stuff kind of works. You can't really get mad at From for that.
And if that 10 dollars really upsets you, here's a coupon code to get 20% off at greenmangaming to get you a deal you can stomach.

A "risk" is exactly what Namco have been avoiding with the most sloppy and quick portjob possible, there's little to reward there.Do you genuinely believe that buying this game would support ports that don't meet the standards of games released in 2003? Well, you're wrong.I'm also on the side of GfWL not being anywhere near as bad as people make it out to be.
Oh I have issues with it from other points of view (pricing and regional locking primarily).. having worked with publishers and seen them pull all sorts of whacky crap I find the honesty refreshing.. I also understand that from probably don't even want to be doing this, and it wouldn't surprise me if someone else is actually doing the porting duties..
I'm just saying that they said what they were offering, buy the game or don't.. just stop screaming at people to not buy it because it doesn't meet some standard that at the end of the day you have no control over (not you personally).
Tell Namco why you aren't buying their game.. but stop rehashing the same frigan arguments over and over again. Some people will not buy the game because of a perceived issue they've read about and have thusly developed resentment for.. if you didn't know this going in.. would you care.. would you notice.. would you just shrug and enjoy a good game?
You know what? Jim Sterling actually had some good words this week in the jimquisition. His basic message was "Don't boycott, it doesn't work. Instead, no matter if you buy or don't buy a game, bitch about it's problems."

I mean I'm sick of this "buying it means it sets a low bar" and "not buying means there's no market" stuff, you wanna change the industry to be more consumer friendly, then actually do something about it. Instead of (as I've said many times already) bitching on a web forum that I'm fairly sure no one from (in this case) namco or from looks at, contact namco, spam them out with your concerns, if enough bitching is done it will make a bad mark on Namco, and they'll have to do something, it worked in the ME3 ending case.
And before anyone tries to tell me to follow my words, I have been, I've already been contacting namco about the concerns of the port, and signed the petition for a post release patch to fix things.
Things won't get better if the consumers don't do anything to attempt to change it. You can now go ahead and bash me for whatever I said you don't agree with, seems to happen here.
Seriously, do you think that more people will notice and complain about 30 FPS than a sub-HD game stretched to whatever-res-are-they-using? 30 FPS is perfectly playable and not being able (hopefully only for a brief moment, till modders solve this) to unlock the framerate won't affect the enjoyment of most PC DS players. Giant pixels will.
(can't wait for my copy)
But is it really going to be that bad?
Many people play games at lower resolution in order to get it to play at a decent frame rate. Omg they're scaling the graphics.. end of the world.. options are nice.. but would you rather not have the game?

Wasn't this petition already posted in this or the other thread because if it was I already signed it.
For me, locked resolution is simply a tipping point, not the one and only reason why I would refuse to purchase.
- The various GFWL issues, such as expensive, limited patching due to certification, save wipe risk, saves locked to machine/account, general issues with the interface, and the reliance on MS's long-term support of the platform.
- Locked to 30fps.
- Hacking. I feel MP is an integral part of the experience and a big reason why this series is so unique. DayZ has shown how badly hacking can hurt a game when it's a trivial matter to engage in it. There is the real potential that Dark Souls could end up in a similar state.
- DLC coming to console versions. Dark Souls on PS3 was a perfectly enjoyable, problem-free experience, even in spite of the few framerate issues. I expect that will remain true once the DLC is released.
- Perceived support of sub-par PC ports. People are constantly trying to empower consumers by proclaiming "Vote with your wallet!" What message would I be sending if I were to give my money to a company that cares so little about their products and consumers that, when asked, all they can be bothered to provide is the absolute bare-minimum?
At this point, the only reason I would purchased Dark Souls for PC is better performance and earlier access to DLC.
