Darren Aronofsky Bows Out of 'Wolverine'

Can someone please explain what would people think would be gained by a RoboCop remake?

The original is absolutely perfect in every way, even the effects still look great.

Are there really people out there who think it'd look better with ten tons of fake looking CGI?

Or that there's anyone that's going to do a better job than the original director and actors?

I know how you feel. I too wanted certain directors to do things.

I don't know this guy so I don't want him anywhere near robocop.

McQuarrie's script is supposedly pretty good, why not let him take the directorial reigns? I actually kind of enjoyed his flick "Way of the Gun."

Wow, the guy who made Way of the Gun wrote the script for this?

ARGH

Now I'm actually pissed DA can't do this movie.

I love Way of the Gun man -_-

Hahaha, gotta love this reasoning. "I don't agree with your (correct) opinion, you must be a troll."

Get over yourselves. Aronofsky has some good flicks, but they're good in spite of his directing, not because of it.

The Wrestler was well-directed.

Requiem for a Dream was not.

Black Swan was halfway.

The Fountain was VERY pretty but too self-indulgent on Aronofsky's part.

Pi I've never seen (not sure why I put that it was a mix at first, must have been thinking of something else).

He's not the great director that people want him to be, but he's certainly not terrible. He's about average. Then again, you think fucking SCORSESE is terrible (which I wouldn't have a problem with if you added the caveat of "recently," but you don't), so your opinion on directors is to be mistrusted.

Edit: On topic, I'm glad Aronofsky is off of this; hopefully, he moves on to something a little more fitting of his potential, something that will challenge him and force him not to be quite so indulgent or overtly philosophical.

They could lose the rights to it if they dawdle.

Not really. Fox already has an X-Men movie coming out this year, they wouldn't need to put another into production until about 2014.

Given that, I assume Fox wanting to fast track this movie has less to do with holding onto the rights and more to do with holding onto Jackman.

Awesome, I hope he'll make an original project now.

He's doing Machine Man next, which is also an adaptation iirc.

Not surprising at all. I'm sure he eventually decided that the humongous paycheck wouldn't be enough to distract him from the inevitable damage that would be done to his career had he made the inevitably terrible film. This guy has actually made some excellent films. I couldn't believe that Matthew Vaughn went back to do First Class, though I guess he just needed a job after Kick-Ass.

Ahhh, very true.

Anyway. My hype for this has now plummeted to zero and, like others have said, the homesick excuse is likely just part of the reason for Aronofsky quitting. There's no doubt in my mind that Fox had already begun interfering, as they've done on every X-Men movie to date.

Exactly the first thing I thought, this being a Fox production and all. Too bad though, because this was by far my most anticipated superhero movie.

Requiem had great direction. You should see Pi, it's a good movie in its own right. I'm not a huge X-men or "superhero" movie fan, so I couldn't care less he decided to leave this project. Frankly it always seemed like it was beneath his greatness.

And their grandmother possibly had custody over them

My dad when he was younger looked like a skinnier Hugh Jackman, when he got old(ish I mean he died at 56) he looked like Ulysses S. Grant.

Drank about as much too.

I'm hard-pressed to think of almost ANYTHING redeeming from that movie. Maybe Ellen Burstyn, but a good (if a bit over-the-top) performance of poor material is kind of a wash.

I saw it in the theater and it blew me away. It was a trip inside of a living nightmare.
YMMV

You guys make it sound like uprooting your comfortably wealthy suburban family to another country away from all of their friends and family and where they'd have to learn a non-Romantic language is NO BIG DEAL.

If I told my GF I wanted to live in Japan for a year she'd tell me to go fuck myself.

not even ass to ass?

I liked Requiem, but there's no reason to watch Pi, it's pretty stupid. It's basically just a Prodigy video.

This is like a simultanious "Noooooooo!" And "yesssss"

As much as I wanted to see a aronofsky wolverine movie we will probably get something nadase and original out of him instead and this sort of hints he wouldn't have had the control he would want anyways.

Fox will never rescind the theatrical rights to X-men, ever. Even if they want to shelf the franchise for a few years to renew interest they just make another couple of vault movies that satisfy the release commitments.

Making everything WAY over the top and gratuitous does not equate to meaning/depth; it DOES make a movie extremely silly, but it doesn't make it good.

Edit: And it's not that a movie can't have unsubtle moments; it's that Requiem is ONE BIG, HUGE unsubtle moment with shit storytelling, characterization, and music.

Puddles said:

"Non-characterization" does not equal "a unique style of characterization," same for the story. At no point do any of those characters seem or behave like real people, and Jared Leto crying in a cab does not humanize him. Beating us over the head OVER and OVER again with the characters' misfortunes, to the point where it becomes unbelievable and silly, is not poignant nor interesting, merely a sign that the director doesn't know how to communicate their message through other means and so is going to go for the easy emotion. It's the definition of a lowest common denominator approach to tackling an issue like drug addiction. The reason people latch on to "Ass to ass!" so strongly is that it's just so wildly over-the-top and eye-rolling that its memetic potential is nearly endless, but in no way, shape, nor form is it a good conclusion to that story, weak as it was.

And that music... I think music is much more difficult to argue than other art forms since the objective facets matter far less than how the music sounds to you, which is a physiological determination almost purely, but I have no trouble saying that in this particular movie, repeating the same theme ad nauseum does not work. At all.

Give it to a Japanese b-movie/horror director or something. Make it r-rated and lower budget. And super gory. Oh my God how awesome would that be.

I want another Punisher: Warzone. Who takes this series seriously anyways? It should revel in it's lack of subtlety.

That sucks, would have been cool to see. Poor Jackman once again losing out on a potentially good Wolverine movie.

The other directors in the running had potential.

Matt Reeves would be cool...personally think Tony Scott would rock that shit out, but i would be expecting a balls to the wall wolverine movie if so.

Yeah Tony Scott would be good out of the ones on the shortlist. But that's only if Fox stepped aside and somehow allowed this to be a mean movie.

I bet Aronofsky wanted to make an R-rated Wolverine, or something extremely dark and stylistic, and Tom Rothman/Fox wouldn't let him.

At first Fox probably said they would let him do whatever he wanted, but then when they understood what the film was going to be they started micromanaging as always.

Damn I hate Fox.

Oh what the fuck. I was really, really intrigued by what an Aranofsky Wolverine would look like. Hopefully he was still at least able to put some of his own ideas forward and those will be kept, but eh. Not good news for the franchise unless they replace him with someone similarly unique.

Would've been interesting to see what this could have been like, but I can't say I'm very saddened by this.

His next project will probably be great either way.

This is incredibly disappointing. I had high hopes for this movie. Also, fuck the haters. The first Wolverine movie is one of the best superhero movies ever made.

Aranofsky's next project will be great. The next Wolverine project will not.
