Dave Chapelle obviously medicated with mary juana for his anxienty.

He seems like a totally different person now.

This isn't a dig btw. Interesting part it he has always seemed more engaged before.

Are you saying he wasn't smoking bud back in the day? I don't understand

The Roots played Africa when Dave walked out. So funny

It is surreal to see Chappelle after aging so much.

pretty funny interview. fallon really needs to learn how to stfu though. that laughing all the time oh man. so forced
He gets too nervous, it's like a coping mechanism. I watched him a lot on Late Night, he did it then too but ever since getting The Tonight Show it has been getting worse. I still like him better than Leno, but Letterman does the best interviews. He's going to be missed.

like you wouldn't be laughing your arse off sat next to Chapelle, come the fuck on

Seriously.

Chappelle is hilarious and we actually have an enthusiastic talk show host who genuinely loves and respects a lot of the people he has on his show. Guys like Letterman, Conan, and Leno hardly gave two shits about 99% of their guests (Letterman practically admitted to this in an interview with Seinfeld a few days ago). Meanwhile Fallon is charismatic and enjoys engaging with his guests and turning a lot of his time with them into borderline SNL segments.

He's just having fun. Some of you guys need to pull the stick out of your ass. Carson used to laugh hysterically with his guests all the time, it's what made him so enjoyable as well.

So why did he quit Chapelle's Show?

At the time I think the explanation was that the show had gotten away from social commentary and starting slanting towards sketches that were just outright racist or cooning.

But I watched a Season 1/2 episode pretty recently, and it seems to me that a fair amount of sketches were already outright racist even in the program's early days.

Watch his Oprah and James Lipton interviews from when he quit the show. He explains it thoroughly. It was a mixture of creative control, feeling like he was performing a disservice to the black community, and perhaps sending out a message that wasn't being interpreted the way he hoped it would be, as the laughs he was getting from some people were not the kinds of reactions he was looking for.

Chapelle said he was doing that airplane skit with the chicken (S3), then somebody started laughing behind the cameras - laughing for the wrong reason.

Hey guys, look, a confident black guy! He must be in drugs!

Fucking horseshit - it's called being happy.

Plus all throughout his standup is the recurring theme of him mistrusting fame/celebrity. He doesn't want to be in that kind of spotlight. Then the media ends up proving his point. He quits a TV show and spends some time in Africa and everyone's calling him a crazy drug addict.

The fuck?

I'm saying the opposite. He looks distant and unengaged in that letterman interview.

It's no secret he used to smoke alot of weed, and it's no secret he got on a health kick in the past few years.

So please, get out of here with that bullshit.

Give me a break. Fallon is a terrible interviewer. His show is fun and the bits he does with celebrities are great, but his is no way a good interviewer. Enthusiasm and being genuine don't mean shit if you can't stop laughing for a second and actually interact with your guest.

And you are foolish if you think Fallon cares that much about his guests. He can't because no one can. Especially comedians. You mention that Seinfeld/Letterman interview, so you know most comedians just don't find typical celebrities all that interesting. Which are the vast majority of guests these shows get anymore. Late night is not what it used to be because the Hollywood system sees it more as a promotional tool than anything. You won't get the hangout atmosphere like you used to get on Carson.

I can't even believe you'd compare Fallon to Carson. He is nothing like him. Carson could laugh and actually conduct an interview at the same time, Fallon can't.

And that's not a bad thing, Fallon is doing is own thing, and is pretty successful with it.

Ok I seriously can't make it more than 15 seconds at a time watching that Fallon video. Is he like that all the time? Because oh my god how do people watch that?

I don't really watch Fallon but didn't think there was anything wrong with the interview. So he was laughing at what Chappelle had to say, big fucking deal. I'm really sorry it ruined the moment for everyone

It isn't that bad. Fallon does it a lot though. He enjoys engaging his guests like that and it turns some people off. I usually don't mind, but sometimes he gets really nervous and it shows with a lot of awkwardly-timed outbursts of laughter.

He's still great at what he does, give him a couple years and he'll learn from all of this.

I think it's just a hold-over complaint from SNL, where Fallon would regularly break character to snicker nervously. It was a problem there.

I'll give it to Fallon though, when he's laughing at people who aren't that funny I sometimes can't help but laugh along.

Dave was pretty funny though. The Kanye part, lol.

That's what I didn't understand. Does he think that it was just S3 that went off the rails, or does feel the same way about the first two seasons? They have some pretty offensive and inelegant jokes in there. There's a sketch about how black people will waste all their reparations money, if they are ever given any. There's a sketch about a night-time sleep aid for black men called R.I.B.S. (which is actually a bucket of barbeque ribs). I'm not sure any of that was being interpreted correctly, or if it was doing any service to the black community.

Surprise, motherfuc*er!

Weren't there creative differences between him and Neal? I think I heard somewhere that they had a minor falling out.

I don't think there was creative differences but I know dave got offered more money and Neil got screwed on the deal. I think they're cool now. I mean technically dave cost him that much money too. He talked about it on joe rogan and another podcast I know. They had a falling out after during the negotiations I think. Dave might have tried to push him out. Which isn't cool. Neal wrote half the show. He wrote the black white supremacist sketch.

Yes, that included sketches from the first two seasons too.

Did Neil ever go on to write something as funny (if not at least half so) since then?

That Kanye bit is exactly what I miss so much about Chappelle. He evens things out in such a logical, relatable manner. Even with a certain amount of appreciation of Kanye, but Dave can't help but be sensible and hilarious.

I would love for Dave to be involved in something more casual. Either on Netflix or something like what Seinfeld is doing. He's just too talented of a dude to not do anything :( But I understand why he did what he did.

I agree that he seems like a totally different person now; much more of a bummer.

I don't think it has anything to do with marijuana.

Nice. I think I still prefer his Inside the Actors Studio interview. I thought it was there that he went into more detail about what happened with the show...either that or it was some other interview. I can't recall.

Chappelle's charisma is impeccable. You can tell his sense of humour or delivery has changed a bit. He peppers it a bit more., but it's the same old Dave.

God I don't know what I'd do for another special :(

i like how neal brennan describes dave chappelle as a 1 in a billion comic. literally one of the funniest people on the earth.

he's an accomplished stand-up, comedy movie writer, comedy movie actor, comedy sketch writer, and comedy sketch actor. literally does it all.

I would imagine that his Radio City show that he was promoting will be sold on Blu/DVD...

...if not, he'd be leaving a LOT of revenue on the table this holiday season.
