The icepick and spike through the bicep were real. The rest was "magic".

Ah this special felt more in spirit like his very first specials before the stunts took center stage.

The fact that he used celebrities is irrelevant.
The tricks could have been accomplished just as well with regular folks.
My guess is that ABC wanted to push the celebrities to grab ratings.

I still remember first seeing David on Conan in 1997 before his first special aired.
That was fun.

LOVED the special and the genuine reactions.

Any body know what's up with the "connection" magic? Where he had one person close their eyes and then he tapped their partner's shoulder and then told the other person to describe what they felt?

I figure it might have something to do with the power of suggestion, but it doesn't explain the playing card tapping on the nose.

That really impressed me.

For the shoulder bit, it looked like he was waiting for her to naturally shudder that way on her own and he suggested it through. No idea about the nose. Guess it was a combination of being able to sense his hands when he waved them infront of Foxx's face and the sound of the card doing manipulation as well.

I love david blaine, he is the best magician/illusionist!

I saw him in person doing magic tricks about 8 or 9 years ago across the steet from Macys in midtown Manhattan. He is amazing. He made a bottle cap go inside a beer bottle by pushing underneath it. He did card tricks, and he is such a cool guy for doing this stuff with everyday people. There was a big crowd around him and I feel bad for the people who walked right passed him without stopping, but people know now to stop for random people getting attention. They missed some awesome stuff. He didnt even have a camera man with him, just doing it because he is such a nice guy.

I dont like when people call him crazy, evil, or that its black magic. He is awesome.

Anyone see the part where he made a $1 bill turn into $100 and the black kids running away with it, not even looking back or saying thanks lol.

Shit, that special made me nostalgic for the 90s. There used to be so many random magic shows on TV all the time. Damn, I miss those.

Same. I miss those shows.

I wish there was more magic shows on. Why not a reality show with aspiring magician's trying to make it or something. That would be cool.

Of course it's fake. All magic is fake, it's the art of illusion. The best is them revealing their secrets. With the age of DVR, you can rewind and see things you weren't paying attention too. The best is street magic because they use illusions. The worst is the new reality staged show crap where they use camera tricks, CGI and special effects.

I was also wondering what the OP was getting at.

it's not, actually.

When you see 'street magic' you often think that there could have been paid actors setup beforehand. With celebrities who have hundreds of millions of dollars (hi Will Smith) your mind is at ease that these people could care less about money and are genuinely just wanting to see what's up.

Yeah, that was hilarious. I wonder if they went and got some ice cream with the money.
Ice cream is good.

How did the trick play out? Usually a card is forced in cases like what I think you're describing.

Yeah, the card could be forced, but I couldn't see him doing sleight of hand with the fruit, if he did mad props to him.

what is so good about it was how he sells it. He tells people about slight of hand and even later talks about how he would take cards with his everywhere and practice. The slight of hand is the beautiful thing about it.

Finally got around to seeing this and I don't understand how most of his tricks are possible, like even remotely possible. The fruit trip with Ford? Writing names on shit that people think of? There's no way for him to do it without them being in on it.

This was my favourite part of the show, such a great reaction :lol

Check out Derren Brown, he's a british entertainer/magician that specializes in hypnotism. Very down-to-earth guy, really.

He explains in many videos the power of unconscious suggestion, etc. And in some videos shows what is done before the cameras roll. Quite remarkable what can be achieved, and what I like about him is it's not made out to be some mystical thing, just they way we process things.

Are there youtube videos for this guy, or is it more TV special type stuff? I'm really interested in it, I've studied quite a bit of psychology over the past 6 years. I figured it was something along those lines, but going on what they briefly show during the special makes it look ridiculous, which is obviously the point of it.

I wonder how often he fucks up?

I mean, he's human, so it has to happen from time to time. I bet he has a way to segue out of failed tricks without his audience knowing what happened.

There is a bunch of stuff on Youtube. One small example is him going around NYC paying for things with blank paper, including an expensive ring (listen to the wording during the conversations, 'you're happy to give that to me' is often slipped in).

Another was subliminally implanting ideas into two art directors from an ad design agency, almost identically to one Brown had prepared beforehand. Similarly a different video showing a set-up to suggest a path to take around a supermarket.

So many fascinating ones, actually, including whole specials related to human behavior :)

Entertaining for the most part, but sticking needles through your body shouldn't really count as "magic". I hope he stays away from doing that sort of thing in the future.

The biggest mystery for me is why Olivia Wilde was just in her bra the whole time. Not that I'm complaining...
