David Reeves interview - (PS3 Euro sales stuff)

Sony and Microsoft performance in Europe/US are like a mirror image, Sony have better momentum in Europa and lag behind in US, while Microsoft have the opposite problem :D, and both have momentum problem in Japan :lol

Didn't Sony's PS3 + 2 Games bundle deal start last week? Isn't that the reason for the quick bump and 3:1 sales ratio for the week? Seems like a timely interview.

I'm sure PS3 is outselling 360, perhaps even 2:1, but I think the 3:1 is purely based on one week and most likely as a result of the new bundle, potentially a short-term bump.

I think they'll get to 3:1 this year, PS3 is only just beginning on the continent.

It is for one week, as he said, but I'm not sure if a bundle is going to bump sales that much. I think, also, here a bundle like that has been available longer than the last week. I'm not sure if it was a retailer or SCE bundle though.

They'd also given similar ratios before, although I'm not sure if the timing then could or couldn't be tied to particular events.

its interesting to see what MGS4 and GTAIV will do in Europe on the PS3. Guess it will sell many systems there.

A couple more quotes:

We’ve now got about two million PlayStation Network registrations. That’s about 40 per cent of users who are registering.

That's 2m in PAL land. So..if ~2m is 40%, 100% is ~5m? Seems on the high side to me, but maybe they sold more in the middle of the year and autumn than I thought.

We’ve also had about 33m downloads which is a huge, huge number. And we’ve got 25 stores up and running across the PAL territories. That, of course, is one of the reasons why it’s sometimes slow to get some of the uploads onto the European PlayStation store; we have so many stores.

Also mentions double-digit million euros worth of sales from the PSN there sofar.

He mentions that he's steering clear of total install base numbers, because Sony Corp will be announcing that shortly (presumably in their financials at the end of the month).

And he says Home is still on track for Spring (we'll see :| where's the wider beta?)

I agree. I don't see a bundle like that, at this time of year, really bumping up the sales to that extent.

Dont think thats possible that would be 2 mio japan, 5 mio europe and 3.5 mio US so world wide ca. 10.5 mio?^^

Pack available only in UK. So, basically you're saying that this pack, available only in UK, has boost the PS3:360 sales ratio from 2:1 to 3:1...in the entire Europe ? Are you serious ?

Sony can resolve their momentum problem in Japan though.

The same can't be said about Microsoft.

I read to the end to post the exact same thing!

The projections of beating the X360s LTD in Europe are based on selling at the same rate as in the week when they launched their new price-positioning promotion (their 3rd so far?) and not on their average sales. They KNOW that post holiday sales are low unless you have a promo so went out guns blazing and got 3:1 over the 360 for the week. This part is great & I approve of their guts to do it (although it pissses over anyone who got one for Xmas for more money...). What is less positive is that some stats guy used this to project the point at which they would smash the X360 gap for 5 mins of positive spin before those who know numbers point out the big gaping flaw in the logic. Heck some posters seem to think it's already happeend in Europe! IT HASN'T.

They need to get rid of the negative 'the third place' mind set a soon as possible, but SPining the data is not the best way as it will cause backlash when it proves to be a stretch. Stick to the facts Sony, you will trounce the X360s LTD easily as the Flat Earth Gamers (those that only buy Fifa, Need For, GTA etc.) will see the PSTripple as the coolest black box to have just because it is the newest one out. Win for real instead of lying to your fanboys and you might just pick up some respect on the way.

Good luck reaching the Wii/DS LTD this decade though... :D

They probably don't care. Not the same demographic, at all. And I can't think of a single PS3/360 gamer that regret not having Brain Academy 2 on its system.

MS could resolve their momentum problem in Europe just as easily as Sony could resolve their problem in Japan. The fact remains, they've got problems in places and it remains to be seen what will happen.

no. They are based on the fact that PS3 already overtook 360 in many countries, including France, Germany, Spain, Italy, etc, in first 9 months on the market.

As always David Reeves is the best executive within SCE to get new infos about upcoming things :D :D Full interview on MCV.co.uk:

Looking forward, how do you feel about the performance of PS3 and PSP through 2008?

I’m going to use the analogy that it is rather like a plane coming in to a runway and you can just about seeing the landing lights. That’s where we were before Christmas.

But now we can see those landing lights – and they are the big titles, such as Gran Turismo, GTA, Metal Gear Solid, Pro Evo, FIFA and Little Big Planet. These are the building blocks of our strategy for 2008.

We will also bring out the TV tuner which we will be rolling out into five major markets at the end of April.

In terms of Gran Turismo we still don’t have a date but I think that Yamauchi-San said it will come out by end of fiscal year, which is the end of March. That’s what I’m planning on at the moment. And PS3 Home is still on track for the spring.

With PSP our plan is to have more dedicated PSP games. We’re also going to be bringing out Skype, plus Go Messenger and Go Explore in March and April. And we’re tying up with Sky in the UK for the video download service in the summer.

So Play TV in April, Home in spring and it seems like the video donwload service will launch in summer ( with PSP getting the promised Sky contents in the UK).

Good news for the PS3 ? Impossible. This is against the TOS.

I don't know how to feel about this.

I have a PS3, but part of me really wants to see the PS3 finish last as punishment for Sony's arrogance ("5 million sales with no games!" "next-gen starts when we say so!" etc).

So yeah. Good for them. I'd still like to see them finish 3rd.
personally i wish microsoft finished 3rd because they still charge for live

nevermind 3rd i wish microsoft went into bankruptcy, all their employees get laid off into poor-paying jobs/default on their mortgage and bill gates died in a plane crash even though he has nothing to do with the xbox

just because of their arrogance :(

Microsoft's problem in Europe isn't something they could solve easily. Their main problem is their brand significance or lack of it. The Xbox brand isn't even in the same league as Playstation or Nintendo. Unless they rebrand the system I don't see them changing positions anytime soon. Heck the PS3 surpassed it in most European markets in just under 11 months compared to the Xbox 360's 24 months with a more expensive price tag and less software library. So its problem clearly isn't Software or price .

Hell, even if they did rebrand the console, the fact that the console is made by Microsoft maybe the bigger problem. I guess people in Europe aren't too happy with Microsoft's past track record.

MS ignores huge sections of the potential market. One thing Sony has always done well is diversification of their product. I know SingStar gets touted alot with this argument, but really, it's because it's true.

MS simply ignored alot of the audience that Sony nurtured, and while there is, without a doubt, a very loyal 360 fanbase, MS seemingly have no interest in anyone outside of it. The likes of Viva Pinata and Scene It! are perfect examples of this. They contrast badly with the rest of the 360 library.

I loved my Xbox and I really thought that MS had a chance to snatch a huge chunk of the PS audience with the 360. But they haven't and now, frankly, I think it's too late.
