DayZ has sold 1 Million Copies

Hopefully this guy decides to actually bust ass and fix the game instead of taking a long vacation with all that monies.

I remember when "so much for the death PC gaming" actually made sense. Let it go.

"So much for the death of paying to alpha test buggy games dying" sounds better.

If Minecraft didn't already show that there is a large contingent of people willing to pay for incomplete products Battlefield 4 sealed the deal.

The problem here is that no one had any expectations about Minecraft. It was simply an idea that evolved. Not to mention that the game was never in an unplayable state, it simply added more features as time went on.

This is not the case with these other games.

Well DayZ isn't in an unplayable state either. Couldn't say the same for BF4 at launch though.

Minecraft was always a work in progress and available for purchase for a relatively low amount of money. It's initial release was a perfectly fine and playable game, with content getting added on a regular basis.

Battlefield 4 is a fully-fledged retail game selling for 65 euros under the guise of a competent product.

This post doesn't make any sense.

The point I was trying to make is that buggy and incomplete games have been shipping forever and will continue to ship in the future. At least games like DayZ and Minecraft have the decency to advertise the fact they are incomplete.

Its pretty amazing selling 1 million with where the games currently at. Hype is a powerful thing though. Iv put alittle over 10 hours into the SA so far, but havnt touched it the last 2 weeks. Waiting on them updates, get cracking rocket!

What are the chances of them expanding the dev team now that theyv sold so many ?
Has Rocket talked about this at all ?

Not to crap the thread... as I've played about 30 hours of the DayZ standalone and think it has great potential.. it's just a few months to a year before really realizing the potential. There's a much better experience available in a mod called Breaking Point for Arma 3 and it's totally free, and always will be free.

Vs Dayz Standalone

Pros:
-Much better performance and fluidity, Arma 3 vs Arma 2
-Much more complete, about 80% to release
-Devs update literally everyday
-Zombie count (Had over 100 on the screen before, and they are an actual threat) and the fact that they aren't the glitchiest enemies in gaming history
-New map along with a huge content update
-Group system
etc etc etc

Cons:
-Current map size of Altis is too big. A totally custom map is being released very soon
-Bugs in BETA include accidental character wipes, etc

I could go on about how much I currently like this mod. It's a shame it doesn't have a bigger following than it does. The website is www.thezombieinfection.com if anyone else would like to check it out.

The game is pretty awesome, I'm playing it on a PC built from spare parts. As it develops and starts getting closer to finished, I'll probably have built an awesome gaming PC to play it and all the other innovative games that are popping up on PC.

wait another 2 years for the beta, add another year to get the finished product.

At least now that he got 1 million sales he should speed this up, hire more people etc.

I joined the numbers. Not huge on how all games are early access but I have friends actively playing the game now so I am joining in.

1 million sales for an alpha. Not sure if I'm impressed or disgusted.

You should be disgusted, I know I am. These "indie" developers are clearly abusing poor (yet idiotic) consumers purchasing an incomplete game!

It's absolutely repulsive and how they continue to do business is not only telling of them but steam, valve and the entire gaming community as a whole. I am mortified, mortified that this is what PC gaming has come to.

It's the only Early Access game I've ever bought, and while I don't regret it, yet, I will say - time to get to fucking work, Dean. I want to see this game fully realized.

This is so factually wrong. This is what it says on the DayZ product page.

WARNING: THIS GAME IS EARLY ACCESS ALPHA. PLEASE DO NOT PURCHASE IT UNLESS YOU WANT TO ACTIVELY SUPPORT DEVELOPMENT OF THE GAME AND ARE PREPARED TO HANDLE WITH SERIOUS ISSUES AND POSSIBLE INTERRUPTIONS OF GAME FUNCTIONING.

It is absolutely clear what you are buying, and no one could say otherwise,

This has been upsetting me more and more.

I think a studio the size of Bohemia should be barred from releasing something in its current state like this. Sadly they haven't invested much if at all over the past few years into their engine. It's still mostly single threaded and performs like complete ass on even modern high end machines.

Let the consumers decide. I knew what I was getting when I bought this game. DayZ Standalone is far from finished, but in a year or two it will be a completely different beast. If not, Rocket and his teams reputation will be tarnished and he will have a hard time getting future support from people like me.

At this point I am starting to become disillusioned with dayz.

Lack of content, steady updates are annoying.

Breaking point is the far better game atm.

Awesome, I've been waiting for a mod like this for Arma 3.

Glad to have another on board. It's just amazing to me that Dayz standalone can sell a million copies, and this amazing mod which crushes DayZ in almost ever aspect, has a peak of 200 players on at any given time.

How the hell do so many people not understand what Early Access means?
The game hasn't gone gold.
It's in active development with people paying for early access to development builds who are entitled to the product through it's lifespan.
You don't get a fully finished, gold product early. That would make no fucking sense to call it Early Access, it would just be released like a regular title.

We understand fully what it is, the point is it's way...way...way...wayyyy far off from being finished and now that it's already sold over a million copies... how much motivation is there to really keep going on this version instead of starting DayZ 2 and grabbing that next million? With a million copies bohemia should be hiring 50 developers and having this thing finished by the end of the year. Instead of 3 weeks per one small update.

I have extremely mixed feelings on the early access program and how it's being used. I understand completely the idea that you give fans the opportunity to support a game by buying early and participating in its development. That's the idea of Kickstarter, right?

Something about some of these games, though, really is rubbing me the wrong way, particularly recent behemoths like Rust and Day Z.

These games are early. They are raw. They are really really early. Particularly in the case of Rust, which is so early I am sort of shocked it wasn't deemed too early even for early access. I'm surprised someone at Steam didn't put their hand over Gary's hand as he was about to click submit and go "no.. just, no. not so fast."

I think it's bordering on predatory to release games this early and vaccuum up everyone's money based on hype. I know you could liken early access to kickstarter, ultimately, in that people are opting to participating in development. The distinction, I feel, is that kickstarter is not a store. There's no promise of instant access. There's no instant gratification, no instant satiation of curiosity -- And so a lot of people are simply impulse buying. They know a game is hyped, they're curious, and they impulse buy. And I think the companies listing products as early access are, in some cases, anticipating and hoping for this.

Buyer beware and all that, but I just think there should be more standards in place for early access. Some buyer protections, or at least some additional warnings -- Or perhaps a "completion level" that makes the consumer who is about to impulse buy a game to play it now abundantly aware of what he's getting himself into.

Prior to Rust, my experience with early access was with games like Don't Starve and Starbound, both of which were imminently polished and playable when released in their early access state. I bought Rust due to its hype and chart topping sales, expecting something more relatable to those other early access experiences -- Thinking the game would be incomplete, but still presentable.

Rust taught me that there are absolutely no standards for what an early access game can be. If a dev rides in with a turd that's two weeks into development (which isn't much worse than what Rust seems like right now, to me) and leverages hype to get chart topping sales, and those chart topping sales beget more sales from curiosity driven impulse buys, well... I don't know how to finish that sentence, but something is bothering me. The investment/reward proposition is out of wack for some developers, who are now being taught that it's smarter to release games for sale in a retail environment when they're in early alpha and not when they're finished.

Day Z and other games support my argument in a similar way that Rust does, Rust is the game I'm citing most because it's a more extreme example. There's really nothing there.

When you're in a retail, impulse buy environment like Steam, and have your game pushed all over the front page of Steam, there should be some standards enforced. I know some people are enjoying Rust, but I was let down. I know that's my own fault and buyer beware and all that, and I know there is an early access warning, but that's now hot the human brain works (at least, not mine). We see something listed on and featured by steam and implicitly perceive that there must be a bit more merit to it, particularly if some of our other early access programs, with the same "unfinished" disclaimer warnings, were far, far more well along in their development.

I thought Rust was going along quite well? Been watching tons of entertaining streams and it seems like people are having a hell of a good time.

I strongly urge you to get onto the DayZ forums and let them know this is how you feel as a paying customer. If enough people impart their worries about future development it can help shape the market outlook for the DayZ team and hopefully make sure they hit expectations.

They still put the giant caps disclaimer on the page though. I mean they straight up tell you its broken. So, you bought it still. Stop the bitching. Bitch only when the shit doesnt get fixed in a reasonable timeframe, which for alpha software can be many months.

My fear with successful Early Access games is that such big exposure on Steam.. front page banner, etc... that they feel like they are already released. The actual release doesn't feel all that important.

So whenever this goes "gold" in a year or more.. there's not this huge influx of sales. So when you've front-loaded so much your revenue.. is the incentive still there to make the best product possible?

I mean, they just brought in 20 million or so.. reinvesting that all back into the game.. and there's no guarantee that upon release there's another million in sales to make.

Every brings up that people don't know what Early Access means... I think people do.. but they don't care.

They are selling a product for real actual money. That's all that matters to them.

I think by the end of this year gamers will regret the advent of Early Access.. especially with how fickle most gamers are... will they even care about these games when the go "gold"? Will multiplayer games lose the community by that point? Is there really going to be a big resurgence of sales upon actual release?

There's a lot to be seen with how this new model benefits gamers.

I think by the time DayZ goes into full release, people won't care as much and will have moved onto the next big EA out there. I could be wrong.

BTW, Breaking Point looks sweet.... going to DL it now.

BTW, when you charge real actual money people are allowed to bitch all they want. Sorry, Alpha's used to be free or limited access... when you start charging for them you can't hide behind... you charged real money for the product.

I don't know, I've seen some twitch channels play this and the running physics where the character's head just tilts is enough of a turn-off for this game.

Is this game like L4D, Dead Island or anything like it?
