DayZ - zombie apocalypse online FFA permadeath survival Arma II mod

the idea of ruining the game - you have an option to hit the store before entering the server and buy ammo, weapons and night vision for real money. Mwahahaha!

Thats a terrible idea. a somewhat less terrible idea would be to have some kind of barter system where you could trade the items you have for other items. So if you want a map, you can trade in your morphine and an ammo clip.

Still pretty terrible, but it would at least provide a risk/reward and be based upon the actual game and no any kind of artificial monetary system or disgusting micro transaction of real money.

I met the Party Bus full on bandits yesterday night, but they crashed it and killed themselves before I could catch up to them. It was some clan called "[MISC]", they were all bandits.

There was a few of them that came back for the bus, I cleaned them up and then looted all the bandit bodies. Found a DWR sniper AND my first ever NightVisionGoggles, they were glorious(but lost them later :(), anyways I grabbed it and then waited in the forest for the bandits to come back for their bus. Sure enough, minutes later a few showed up and I quickly dispatched them as the ran around panicked. More showed up and again i took them out. The final time 3 showed up and got me, but not before taking down 2 of them. They were all pissed and disconnected. :)

Yeah that was the best part of the night for me, took down like 8 bandits in total during that

That said a move to Arma 3 is best for BIS in order to promote their new game, but due to its rather high system requirements its may be better for consumers if it stays on Arma 2. Theres pros and cons all around though with either engine.

I would fall into the latter. I've had my PC about 20 months now and I expect another 3 years before I consider pouring money into upgrading. I'm very happy with the way games run on my 2010 built PC. GTX460, 8gb Ram, i5 3.5ghz. Only games I've had so far that I can't run on the Ultra Highest settings are BF3 and Witcher 2 and they still look great.

I do understand that a DayZ mod for A3 would be a sensible move but it would also split communities quite substantially imo. Maybe use A2 to iron out a lot of the issues then release it later for A3.

Nice going dude! I wish I could've been there. :)

I don't play FPSes with a mouse and keyboard. I don't play PC games. Hell, I don't even HAVE a PC, I have an old Mac.

But I really, really, REALLY want to play this game. It sounds absolutely amazing.

Oh and thanks to a glitch, I was able to come back alive exactly where I had died.

Me and Docbon were fighting some bandits outside starry sober and we got em but not before I took some bullets and died.

I clicked abort, disconnect, and then OK to respawn. Instead of spawning near the coast like usual, I spawned exactly where I had died. BUT i was passed out with the hourglass slowly ticking away. I call Docbon back to me a he bandages me up, gives me blood but I'm still stuck on the ground with the hourglass ticking down. When the hourglass finally empties I'm able to stand back up and am alive again.

Twas awesome

I guess this is a bad time to jump into the game for the first time since it will be night on US servers? :P

I swear, this came out the day after I uninstalled ArmA 2. It's like they knew I would have to download 40204 GB's of files again.

Yep, had the same the other day.

So time passes slowly for your character when you're not playing, right? How slowly exactly?

By the time I log on tonight it will have been just over 24 hours since I last played. This is the first time I've stopped playing when I'm alive so I was wondering if I'd need to leg it to a city for food/water tonight when I play!

you can play off other countries servers as well ive had no problem with latency playing EU servers from the US

Well I got jammed with a bandit skin after defending myself from apparent "friendlies" who fired on me first. My humanity was in the negative but now it's at positive 100. When will I shed the bandit skin? :( Anyone with a bandit skin is basically "shoot on sight". :(

BTW. I'm ultrazilla in game as well.

.

Thats not terrible at all... Some kind of economic system is logical, a npc migrating caravan for example could be nice.

An interview with the creator

Its weird that he doesnt talk as a bohemia employee.

may be because he isn't?

Have you had any response from Bohemia Interactive? Their game is now outselling Skyrim on Steam thanks to your mod, so has there been any word from them?

It’s not my place to speak for Bohemia Interactive themselves, and I am sure they’d be more than happy to answer any questions. But I can talk about how I feel about them. I think they’re one of the great studios, because they have really valued and invested in the community. I read on a forum somewhere someone saying that there is one thing that always makes a company take notice and that’s changes to the bottom line. Obviously that’s happened and I don’t think BIS are the only ones to notice that. I think this is an example of “if you look after the community, they will look after you”. Hopefully it challenges some other studio’s to follow this example. I think this is a direct vindication of their business strategy and approach. I can’t think of a studio that deserves a little bottom line increase more than them.

I'm way more pessimstic about the future of this project now. But they can work it out.

Our other man is Dean "Rocket" Hall, who works for BIS as a multiplayer designer, but is actually a serving member of New Zealand military

Just ordered Combined Operations via Amazon Warehouse Deals for 29.99. I guess if there is an issue with serial keys, i can just send it back and get a refund either way. Funny that its going to arrive the same day Diablo 3 arrives lol.

Wow, 26k unique players so far. Going from expecting to only have 2 - 4 servers for capacity testing to 26k users, no wonder the main server is getting hammered :)

Bohemia must be loving it. I wonder how many people had to buy one or both of the games. I'd say the majority, probably.

Hopefully this encourages more mod support.

Man, three of us made our way from the coast to the Stary point town. Saw a flare off in the distance, but saw nobody there, so we went about our business. A few minutes later, we hear a grenade go off near the flare. I spot 3, possibly 4 bandits with my sniper. We decide to keep low for a bit, then zombies spotted one of us. We had a large firefight with some zombies, but I kept up high just in case the bandits were heading nearby. One of us got picked off by the dreaded stairs bug. I spotted one of the bandits making a move out towards the field between us, took the shot and he went down in one go. Took a couple of shots at another, but he was under cover. Someone else ended up sniping me and I died. While I was respawning, the last friend alive was silent for a while, then suddenly says "Got two of them, but the last one killed me. He was surrounded by zombies when I went down, though"

Fun game

they really need to make the flashlight a tool instead of an inventory item.

makes no sense as it is now as well as makes the flashlight near unusable

also I would love a similar mod for Fallout 3 and New Vegas.

I will be playing tonight hopefully. I have managed to download all the 700mb patch I needed from Arma2 servers. they have some very unsteady servers. Took me 6 attempts to get that file. Loved reading the rock paper shotgun article.

I will be on in around 6hrs but chances are I max hop on one of the Aussie/Kiwi servers as they're a lot easier that time of the morning (about 4am our time) but then there is the chance of playing under a cloudy night.

No matter which server I try, I get kicked back out to the server window and it says "Waiting for character to create" in the background. Nothing ever happens after that though.

I tried copying the BattleEye folder from ARMA2 to OA, but that didn't make any difference.

experiencing this every time i try to play now too. is the masterserver overloaded? been like this the past few days.

real bummer.

I only have the original ARMA II, can anyone tell me if there are people still playing that or has everyone moved on to the expansion packs?

If its longer than 10 minutes I abort twice then go back in without leaving the server. Sometimes that works. If its been 25 mins I move to another server.

I have been on a server where there was no loot and no zombies and another server with just zombies. I now check with users logged on if everything is fine with the server if I join one with more than 5 spaces.

Installing Arrowhead on top of the free arma 2 because i'm cheap.

from wikipedia:
In June 2011 Bohemia Interactive released a free to play version of Arma 2, featuring full multiplayer compatibility with the retail version of Arma 2.[10] However the singleplayer campaign has been omitted and players will not be able to use HD textures, mods or play with Operation Arrowhead or DLC content.

I'd like to watch a Youtube video to get a better idea of what this game is like, but all of the ones I've found have dumb assholes narrating the whole thing or they are in parties with other assholes who sing/do stupid shit.

I'd like to get a true sense of what the game is like in video form. The posts in this thread are pretty awesome, but I read all kinds of amazing stuff about Skyrim too before finding out for myself that it was just Oblivion again.

I really dig these guy's playthrough vids... http://www.youtube.com/user/PsiSyndicate/videos

It was nuts. A Gaf group met up in the airfield tonight to track some bandits. Had a firefight, everyone died except for me and two others. We waited for someone to come and give Gibon (I think?) some blood... Tracked back to the barracks and got swarmed by a zombie spawn pool. I thought I died (hourglass on the screen), but somehow managed to crawl away. I got separated from the group after that, but I found a car and tried to repair it with some spare tires but man, fuckin Gabe Newell came outta nowhere and capped my ass.

The airfield.

It's not safe.

Damn, I wish I could have been there, but my internet connection died when we were walking around those hangars. :/

this one is great, post-commentary but shows typical stuff you might run across in DayZ, trust/don't trust/kill or spare...decisions have to be quicker than your trigger finger
