DayZ - zombie apocalypse online FFA permadeath survival Arma II mod

Apparently there's a stress test for Guild Wars 2 in the evening today (the game I've been excited about for 3 years now) and yet I'm only interested in playing DayZ when I get home. The way this game sucks you in is so far ahead of anything else I've played.

I got Arma 2, a game a previously had no interest in, just for this mod. So far every day has been a totally different experience.

I was just playing devils advocate.

How dare you.

Oh god, the new patch made it a lot more tense, even going to a pond to fill my water bottles was a risky ordeal, had 5 zombies close to it. I only had to take one of them out so I could sneak to the pond and fill my bottles.

The server I went on already had over a 1000 zombies there and I saw zombies next to places that never had them before, like small huts in the middle of a forest and stuff. Running around is way more dangerous right now, I almost think I shouldn't even consider soloing around and instead wait for gaffers to get on mumble and form a group.

Excellent! I've been reading reports of people seeing Zombies migrating from town to town. They may have chased someone and been shuffling back to where they spawned, but I hope Rocket actually added hordes moving from town to town.

I have been trying to think of a game mechanic that would some how reward players who have survived longer. Maybe something subtle like your water and hunger levels decrease a little slower since you have "adapted" to your surroundings better.

I'm almost as intimidated to go back in alone now as I was when I first started playing this, all the good loot on me isn't making it any easier either.

There's only two things I could use now, a silenced M4 and NV goggles. Don't need GPS since I'm decent with a map.

Ahhhh, that might explain it. Did have a hoard pass by me last night, really did just seem to be walking along the road. Don't know if they were following someone previously or what, but it was a large group of them that had me pinned for a good amount of time. Was really too damn scared to move since I was affraid they would see me if I got out of prone...

Then it's a problem with your settings

Depends on what people consider choppy I guess. I'm just running the in-game very high setting at 1080p. Turned down some settings that don't even improve the look of the game, like the crazy bloom.

I get 60fps most of the time, but sometimes (mainly during firefights) my frames drop to 30-40. That range has really bad mouse movement. I just want to know if there is any Arma veterans here that know if there's any recommended tweaks.

Chernarus is really light on resources, never dropped below 60 on that map even on older computers. What's your Video Memory setting?

I think it was at very high.

That's for AMD cards. You need to switch to Default and delete your ArmA2OA.cfg in your documents / ArmA 2 folder ( Else it just saves the old settings ).

Also, don't overdo view distance ( Over 6k ) it's very CPU and HDD intensive in some areas.

Can you shed some light on why it's specifically for AMD cards? Thanks for the tip. Will see how much it improves.

It's how it handles Vram and its textures. It's a well-known fact over on the BIS forums, in the troubleshooting section that anything besides default on Nvidia cards tends to cause stuttering, extremely bland textures ( They never load ), random massive framedrops etc. I've had the problem myself when I switched from my 5970 to 580 back in the day, I was wondering why my game suddenly ran like shit. Switch to default, deleted my .cfg and game was back up to 60FPS rock solid. So you tend to use Very High on AMD cards only.

so how do you set up xplit with arma 2? it seems to work on my desktop, but as soon as i load arma 2 it just shwos a black screen.

Thanks for this. I've been having massive frame drops in medium to large cities and wasn't sure why. I've been toying with my video settings in the game for the past week.

You can use the Game Source option, which is poorly optimized and drops your frames to the range of 15-20, if you're lucky. The other option is to make ARMA 2 launch in Windowed mode. Just add the command line -window and it should launch in a window. There isn't a reliable way to make it fullscreen windowed.

Oh that's cool, www.dayzmod.com also got a redesign.

Jeez, reading the forums now after the update and I'm not sure it's a good idea to jump in the game alone now. I think I'll wait till other gaffers get online and on mumble ;) .

Great redesign. The Survivors video really sets the mood. I especially loved the shot with the group of tents. I really hope fortifications of some kind can be erected in the future. There's so much potential, and I'm confident it will surface.

My only issue right now I'm dealing with is trying to meet up with people :( Having died days ago, everyone is still mainly way up north. Now that I'm off for a few days I have more time to make my way up there during the day.

I have a 2500k @ 4GHz and a GTX460, and I run at high/very high and it's almost always at 60 fps. It dips sometimes, but never below ~45 fps.

I had to set object detail at low though for some reason. It killed my performance in some spots.

I'd be more than happy to book it south and meet up with you, though with the new patch you would need to be able to find a place to meet that isn't a zombie fest.

The free version of Xsplit doesn't record game source I think. It will only record the screen region, so to get Arma2 to show up you gotta set it to windowed mode. Game source is also pretty buggy so a lot of people use other programs with Xsplit. I'd recommend Xsplit + Dxtory.

I just had the most awesome experience but I was a retard and didn't notice I hadn't turned FRAPS on.

I met a guy along the coast just outside Cherno. Despite having 1000 humanity I still have a bandit skin so I was quick to identify myself as friendly. He didn't say anything in chat but I gestured I was heading towards Cherno and started off in that direction. He stayed behind me, probably for fear of getting a bullet to the head.

We reach Cherno and it's mental. 1100 zombies in the server. Instantly about half a dozen are on to us and I just leg it. I look over my shoulder and he was smart and did the exact same thing. We ran along the coast of Cherno until we got to the coast far enough out of the city, I did a quick 180 and without evening blinking the guy did the same. BAM BAM BAM. Three clips later, this is the scene:

arma2oa2012-05-1515-5xday3.png

With all this shooting we had another guy who was on the road come down and start shooting too. With these zombies dead, and Cherno clearly overrun, there was a lot of chatter going on about Elektro and good loot being all over the place. Why the fuck not, I thought. We spend a good 10-15 minutes running across the coast, dropping some zombies when they got too close.

When we eventually get to Elektro it is clearly swamped too. Way too many for just three guys. This was on the side though, and not wanting to come for nothing I entered the big red house on the west outskirts. JACKPOT. Winchester and two Lee Enfields. Although we were being quiet we must have made too much noise because when I got back in to the main hallway there are just four zombies stumbling in. I shat myself. Lots of gunfire later there's no longer zombies standing there, but about a dozen more rushing in.

Fight or flight takes over and I leg it out of the house, really hoping they followed me. They didn't. I dodged a few zombies and BARELY made it to the big building with a ladder on to the roof. I took a few hits on the ladder, but still had 8k blood left. That was okay.

I run over to the corner of the roof and look back to the house where I had just ran from. I could see through the two windows the guys firing every piece of ammo they had from their Enfields and pistols in to the horde, but there were more and more coming. I picked a few off with my Winchester but the distance (and lag - American server) made it difficult. After about half a dozen zombies go down, along with one of us, the other guy wises up and legs it out the back door. I track him and shoot two shots to get his attention. He changes course and runs towards my building. There's a few zombies chasing him so I start to shoot them best I can until I'm out of ammo and have to switch to my pistol. I drop 3 or 4 of the ones chasing him but once he got so close to the building I couldn't see over the ledge. I waited.

And waited.

After about 2/3 minutes I couldn't wait any longer. He was either dead or had legged it around the building. I decided I might as well try to make it down. Somehow, at the bottom of the ladder, there were no longer any zombies there. I guess they must have all followed him. I hear gunshots and sneak around the corner to see two bandits fighting off a horde. Fuck that. Backtrack the way I came, get into the house to salvage some ammo, live to fight for another day.

And I did.

Like I said, this game is all human interaction. None of us said anything other than my initial "friendly" and we just did what we had to to survive. I have no idea what happened to that guy, if he made it or fell victim to the horde. He has no idea what happened to me. I don't even know his name.

Fuck man, THIS GAME.

any other streaming websites that let me get around this?

Livestream? It's not as good, but I think it should do the trick. I think someone here used it to Stream DayZ. edit: here's the post.

Dxtory + Xsplit is an awesome combo.

FPS goes to hell when I look a trees, I turned the overall Graphic settings from Very High to High but then the game looks quite blurry all round.

I appreciate it, but mainly the issue has been time. I've got a few days off so I can slowly make my way up without having to rush. No need to risk a long trip at this point, unless you aren't too far from the coast. Either way, I will get up there!

I think my latest spawn is near Solichiny, but I could be wrong and/or could have died since. Wish Berezino was a spawn point?

Sorry about the lack of non recorded voice but I just basically hit record on fraps. This wasn't a planned record session.

This is the culmination of a long, long journey with Broken/Irish just to meet up with gaffers in Grishino. Yes, I know it's dark and I had the gamma adjusted but even with that, the area was as you see. The sounds are enough to give you the impression of panic though. You could imagine how much more scarier it would be without mics so having comms is a must. All from 1.5.7 version of DayZ. The following ensued.

PART 1 of Operation GAF FAIL :P

P.S. Thanks again Oatmeal. Our light and beacon :P

Part 2 in an hour.

every server seems to have everyoen stuck on waiting for server response

I've come to the conclusion that you're not actually waiting for the server you're joining to respond, it's waiting for the MAIN SERVER, which keeps all the information about you (location, inventory, health, humanity...), to respond.

That server is maintained by the MOD Creator and, as you can deduce, is being hammered with the influx of new players.

They should find a solution for the main server load. Patches be damned. Let me get into the game first.

Taking into consideration that the main server is probably ran by the mod creator and the fact that he's not making a single penny for all these ArmA II purchases to play his mod, how is he supposed to increase server capacity?

Guys what's the best thing to do when there's about 10 zombies chasing you when you have no ammo ?

I just couldn't shake them

How were they rushing in? I thought zombies started walking slowly when they enter buildings, so you can kill them more easily, and going outside will just mean suicide unless the zombies stay glitched (which happened to me when zombies walked through a building and doors and apparently got stuck in the slow animation)?

Also I'm a bit confused by the forum. Don't you gain humanity from killing someone with a bandit skin? I saw at least two posts that seemed to indicate you lost humanity from killing bandits, but I'm hoping those people were just confused. Here's the opinion of one of them, apparently a career bandit:

The whining is epic.

Quite honestly, the morality mechanic is required. I am a bandit myself, the only reason to not want the skin change is to make it easier to kill unsuspecting nubbins.

The only legitimate argument to not want the skin change/morality is for players who are about to be attacked by bandits who shoot first and kill the bandits. They lose morality and may end up as bandits themsevles, depiste firing in self-defense.

The easy fix is to remove any morality hit for shooting a bandit. Then you can shoot bandits all day long, wheter they fire first or not, and take no morality hit.

I doubt the prostars whining about the skin, however, will accept this.

TLDR;

Remove morality hit for killing bandit
????
Profit!

More importantly, there is no legitimate reason to not want the bandit skin, except you want it easier when killing people. As a bandit myself, I have no sympathy for you, nor do I want friendly fire removed or any other 'care bear' mechanics introduced.

Bandit skin should stay, morality hit for killing bandits should go. Thats it.

Run into a building, into other survivors, up or down a hill (might not work), use a smoke grenade, or (most likely option) disconnect from the server and hope when you reconnect or connect to a different server, you are are alive, have exploited the system, and all the zombies have vanished.

Otherwise they will follow you eternally, and you might as well just kill yourself and respawn.

Alone. In a land where few roam. Murder and bloodshed are yesterday. Although the ache of bullet wounds gives me caution as I move about these woods. Sheer rocks jut out of the earth. I wander past relics of a world no longer fathomable.

Towns are deserted. Neither man nor shamblers. In a barn I drop a flare, bringing light in the dead of night. A tire! But I cannot sacrifice supplies for this pipe dream. The flare extinguished, my exploration continues. Hoping to meet up with BS, liquid and static. Almost free of this town. Until I hear the wailing. Two shamblers are upon me. Upon me before I can draw my pistol to their head. I fire almost blindly. Down to one clip, reloading. Two more bearers of death find me. I run, clip still in my hand, lucky that it does not fall. I run. Eight rounds. A rifle slung over my shoulder that would beckon all the dead. I avoid my haven of the woods, lest I hit a tree in this darkness and the dead descend upon me. To the open field. Decisions. I turn. Firing I take down one. The other strikes me. I end it's walking reign of horror. Bandaged, consumed most of my food.

BS, liquid and static find me. Novy our immediate goal, hope for water.

Caution righteously reigns. At gunfire, we stop. No movement save for bunnies. I resume my role from the night before, covering with my rifle. They make the trek into Novy. Flares light the hillside. Oatmeal joins. Then shouts go out. Another group has pinned them in the church. After greetings are exchanged, the situation is diffused. We, five strong now. Shots ring out. We dig in once more. We run among trees. Watch for stalkers. Conceal our movement. Headed south. Few walkers in sight. Another night closes in the wilderness.

If I were u, I would look at at maybe getting two, or getting a stronger card. My 4890 does well, but I'm certainly not ready for most of the newer stuff coming out ESPECIALLY ARMA 3.

Thanks for the advice, I'm on a very tight budget so I'm hopeful what I have will do me for now...I've been out of PC gaming for a while and only really getting this PC for this game - tho it'd be nice to have a PC that will play most of what's out there (I'm upgrading from a AMD 64 4000+ with 8800GTX lol).

Looking around it seems CPU is the biggest bottleneck on this game?
