DayZ - zombie apocalypse online FFA permadeath survival Arma II mod

So I was on the roof of the hospital in Elektro with an Enfield just scouting out how best to go north without running in too many zombies. There were lots around the building with lots of floors (school?) and generally in the streets. Would be close. I'll wait it out.

A survivor wanders along and is sneaking through the streets. This could be fun, I thought, and shot my Enfield 3 times.

The horde rushed to the hospital, swamped him and ripped him to shreds as he desperately tried to fight them off. I was laughing hard. He wasn't impressed in the chat!

Plus, I got out of there safe in the end so it worked out okay for me! I'm thinking of taking a trip to Sobor tonight... try to find some decent loot. Spent too much time on the coast lately.

anyone know how well arma II runs on a c2d at around 3ghz and a gtx 260? not looking for 1080p with MSAA or anything, 720 is enough for me if it can run at a playable rate.

I respectfully and wholeheartedly disagree. Perma death (or capped continues) was the norm for decades and only began to fall out of favor nearing the end of the snes/genesis era. I personally don't agree with the notion that persistent death equals hardcore, and with the average age of a gamer being 35, I'm inclined to believe neither do the majority.
When I hear quotes from CEO's justifying the industry's continual regurgitation of experiences, I chock it up as another example of an out of touch misguided businessman that can't grasp his market.
When I hear the same pigeon-holeing sentiments reiterated by another gamer, I'm equally dumbfounded as I am saddened.
Couldn't agree more, in fact I'd probably stop playing this mod if it didn't have permanent death, it always keeps the thought of death in the back of your mind while playing.

Cool interview too, he sounds like he knows exactly what he wants from this mod.

I've got a quad core amd phenom at 3ghz and gtx 260, i'm running everything on high. In the benchmarks i average out at about 34ish and dayz runs fine.

Yeah the permanent death thing creates tension like no game i've played before. I was up in stary with some of gaf when some bandits started taking us out when we were in a warehouse. It was only me and nix alive and the tension when the doors of the warehouse opened and i had to take the guy out was unbelievable, the thought of dying and losing all my stuff and the thought of those scummy bastards stealing it. I killed the guy that came in the door and then shot his mate through a gap in some sheet metal that made up the side of the building. It was so satifying just being alive when i was so close to dying.

Man.... all the GAFfers who were in that DE1 server with us last night are going to be so pissed when they log back in to the game and realize that nothing they did in that server the entire night was saved correctly or even mattered at all.

Still, after all that BS on the laggy Denmark server, we ended up switching to Chicago where it was miraculously day time.... Wait, did I say Chicago? I actually meant Dallas... Sorry guys. :P

We had one hell of a run through the coastal towns with a group of about 6 people including Mickey, AJ, and... damn... all I remember was the codenames we used- Generic White Dude, Braveheart, Orignal Braveheart/Crossbow/House Killer/Rambo/Sniper Braveheart (really, you were a man of many, many names). Chernogorsk was our play area and we had a wild time there. We all met up in the church near the coast, which provided a few Hollywood worthy scenes. The greatest one, of course, was when Mickey opened up the double church doors and immediately got shot in the face. I've seen that very same thing in dozens of movies but I don't think I've ever actually experienced it in a way that felt as visceral as that one did.

After that, we had a fair bit of tension when a member of our group ran in with a random. We all kept our eye on the dude wondering if we should just go ahead and kill him or not because he could have been part of the bandit group that was keeping us holed up in the church. Luckily, he ended up disconnecting, so we never had to worry about it at all.

After Mickey reunited with us at the church, we went ahead and crawled our way over to the general store and looted it for a while before some random survivor managed to draw a crap ton of Zombie aggro to himself and then brought damn near the entire group of Cherno zombies around the general store. All of the building's doors were closed, but the zombies still decided to ghost their way in. We probably killed about 70 or so zombies by that point and also shot that stupid survivor to death. Must have felt satisfying for the person who got the actual kill (probably Mickey).

After that encounter, we got chased towards some building where we climbed up to the roof and threw a smoke grenade out, drawing all the aggro off of us. One us died on the way there with a frag grenade still in his backpack, so we ran back to get it and then launched it off the roof towards one of the Zed groups that had gathered around there, killing quite a few of them. Pretty exciting to watch, I must say.

Unfortunately, I DCed right after that and when I got back on, everyone had left mumble for the night. Oh well, it was a ton of fucking fun.

Once you add a way to save items on death like storage boxes this mod is broken, for what I can see this game is hugely risk v reward.

There is a system like that in place in a way though and I still wouldn't call it broken. All of your loot remains on your last body in the server and you can retrieve it all if you get to it before somebody else does. In addition to that, you can store stuff in tents, but those can also be looted by anybody else in the server.

I'm no expert but I read lot's that this is CPU intensive and quad core pref. Personally I would google 'arma 2 XXX' where XXX=your CPU - that way you will get a better answer.

What's the actual CPU anyway?

also, sorry if common knowledge - but you don't need both Arma 2 & Operation Arrowhead. Apparently OA is a standalone game which will work on it's own.

Arma II is now #1 top seller on steam in the UK above max payne 3.

I suppose that items being looted by anyone and everyone balances it out, like the killer may wait for you to return or your friends to get your loot.

sweet that makes it only £15 instead of £25 then, everyone on steam is buying the double pack.

OA is standalone but dayz uses the map and some other stuff from the base arma 2 so you need both for dayz.

odd, on the setup jpg listed in the OP it says you don't need Arma 2 just OA :S

the jpg guide says you can use the free version of arma 2. It apparently makes the textures pretty shitty and could make the game buggy. Getting the full game is the preferable option for getting it running and looking the best.

You can get the free version of ArmA II and combine that with Operation Arrowhead to play DayZ. You don't have to buy ArmA II is what I think it may have said if I remember correctly, which is true with the free version. Of course, the textures are muddier and some other stuff with the free version. There may not be any SP content in the free ArmA II, but I don't know for sure.

The trailer on the main DayZ mod site is really well done. It definitely gives people an idea of how the game just feels overall.

I forgot something that I got yesterday.

-17k humanity! Woo!

Haha, finally catching up to me and Foli :) Though I think we're all still way behind Gibbonz lol

My new goal is to turn Survivor again, should be a good challenge seeing as I finished on -19k last night.

^ trailer above is really good. first half of the video captures the atmosphere in the game perfectly.

i'm thinking about rolling back my dayz to 1.56. i don't mind the increased zombie count in 1.57, but the fast spawning and the bug/removal of the zombie agro meter makes it too unfair imo. i'm also a lone player so none of this helps. obviously alpha and bugs etc etc, will see how things go.

But are there any servers running 1.5.6?

I haven't played 1.57 yet but from the sounds of things I have the same concerns. I think I'll hold off until the next version to see what gets fixed. Don't want to lose my current character to something that'll be fixed in a week.

Edit: can I make another profile and have a 2nd character? Does anyone use multiple characters?

the increased zombies doesn't bother me, although it really does rake up the difficulty. what i liked about patches up to 1.56 is that sound played a huge factor in alerting you to zombies. you'd be able to tell if zombies were near, and if they calm or enraged. it made things easier, and made environmental awareness via sound important.

from what i played and heard, 1.57 ditches/has a bug which stops this from happening. i've literally been in a few situtations where i've been walking past a town and i didn't know a zombie was attacking me until he was hitting me.

I tried this, doesn't work. You are assigned a player ID which goes across all the profiles, no ide aif there is a way to change that.

I don't think so. Orgun tried it to get rid of his bandit and it didn't work.

Beaten by the man himself.

Yea I had a feeling it might work like that. Now that I think about it, it's probably to prevent abuse. You could spawn a bunch of characters and pool their gear together

As exciting as it is to read about his future plans for the game, I would much prefer they actually fix the game as it exists right now and after the infrastructure issues are worked out then move on to adding new features.

Logged off yesterday in a group.

Logged on today and we were all at different parts of the map. Sadface.

Met up with two of the group pretty quick, one died to a bandit attack, we rebuffed, looted, legged it into the trees and logged off.

Such a bummer, we were right outside a supermarket yesterday. Argh!

So did I screw this whole thing up?

I have the retail version of ArmA 2. I bought OA from gamesrocket for $11.50.

Install ArmA 2 --> Install OA --> update OA to 1.60 --> Used DayZupdater for Day Z

I got a few errors and couldn't join a game. I am installing the 1.01-->1.05 then 1.05--> 1.11 patch for base ArmA 2 now. I am assuming this is my issue.

Did I botch the whole thing up by installing things out of order? Those installs took foreverrr!

Yeah blatantly is, you gotta have all the retail stuff patched. Just been through the same process as you. Wouldn't worry about the order, if it doesn't work retry the OA patch, perhaps it overwrites some Arma 2 files.

I think you need to install both ARMA 2 and OA, then run them both so they find each other and they become combined ops, then you run the 1.60 update. I'm not a 100% sure though because I had CO installed for over a year so all I had to do was download and install the 1.60 update.

Edit: I think the 1.60 patch has all the previous patches included with it, so no need to patch 1.01, 1.05 etc.

I play mostly lonewolf and find the game to be much more exciting now, you just have to adapt your play-style.

My char that I started after patch update is still alive and I have played him solo.

I started somewhere unknown and saw a little village that I decided to investigate, it ended up with me being chased by ten walkers through an apple orchard. After having taken out all but one walker I was out of ammo and ran for like 3 minutes until I saw a barn. Hoping to find ammo inside I ran straight towards it. As I dashed into the dark barn my hopes were crushed, though there were no walkers inside it there were nothing but empty tin cans. I ran into a corner and crouched waiting for the walker to enter the barn which would give me a few more seconds ahead when I ran out. But it never entered. It was outside and I could hear it walking towards the door. I quickly picked up a few tin cans and through them out through the barn door. It worked!! As the walker slowly walked towards the tin cans I could crawl out of the barn and quickly crawl away. 30 meters away from the barn I sat up and looked around, the walker must have forgotten about me and I could continue my journey.

Next I came to the area of Berezino where I learned how to tackle the walker masses as a lone wolf. In fact, I now think that a survivor that knows how to use stealth properly have the advantage in cities. I crouched and crawled around the area for a few hours until I had enough good tools and stuff to be able to continue inwards the counryside for safer exploration without fear of starving to death.

things to consider:
1. if you have room in your inventory, pick up tin cans and empty whisky bottles. They will save both your life and time used for distraction.

2. When crawling through some entrances your character will stand up and walk. Before going through go to crouch mode and get back to prone once you have gotten through. Or be prepared to switch to prone as fast as possible.

3. Sometimes when interacting with gear on bodies or from yourself your character will stand or crouch. Be prepared to quickly switch to prone.

4. Have patience or die. If you are unpatient you will die.

5. Do not pull the trigger unless you absolutely have to. Always crawl/crouch away or around if you have the option. See p. 4. Even using the crossbow is a risk unless you are a master marksman, and trying to retrieve a steel bolt in a walker infested area is very frustrating and might give your position away. Walker loot is never worth it anyway.

6. Walkers are now outside, not inside. Unless you are noticed indoors can now feel like a safezone, a place to take your breath and plan your next move. Since loot in buildings always are better than loot on walker again, stealth by all walkers to get into the buildings. See p. 5.

7. Use third person view while crawling if it is possible. Some might consider it cheating but the stealth game is vastly improved if you use third person view properly.

I've gotten as far as launching the game, it has the @dayz in the corner, just couldn't get into the game. I'll write down what the errors say when I try again after updating.

My game version is still at 1.01 for ArmA 2 though. I read a guide that said to update everything.

Maybe my problem is elsewhere.

This. I'm amazed at how many people don't know what "Alpha" means. Doesn't matter how popular his product is, he's following a typical design/development process.

Ninja Edit: How quickly people forget how bad the Minecraft Alpha was.

For real, how the hell can people be getting bent out of shape. I couldn't think of a more enticing and promising alpha phase of a game! A) it is already ridiculous amounts of fun and awesome B) very playable with relatively few major game breaking, or more importantly, fun breaking bugs and C) The guy works for the fucking company of the game the mod runs on! (not sure how common this is but I think it is pretty promising)

I can't wait to see this thing grow. I really think it will only get better and better. Of course there will be ups and downs but the overall quality will trend upwards. I didn't have time to play last night and I have been obsessed with what I am going to do next time I log on. I have looked at maps of Chernaus at work several times already. I am moments away from printing out one and starting to notate it in my free time. I haven't been this excited for a game in ages.

Edit: MasLegio, holy shit I never though of throwing junk as a distraction for Zeds!

-22k after our GAF session. ;)

Shame the floor of the air field killed you! Haha.

Yeah I have no idea why my guy keeled over at the airfield. Third time this has happened to me now.

Haha, finally catching up to me and Foli :) Though I think we're all still way behind Gibbonz lol

My new goal is to turn Survivor again, should be a good challenge seeing as I finished on -19k last night.

Now that I've finally found a good place to murder people from I think I'll break -25k within the next day or so (all depends on how much I enjoy diablo 3). Nametags are so broken when you have a sniper rifle. :)

Yup, i'm definitely not playing on servers with that enabled anymore. Makes it too easy to spot people in the grass! Never would have spotted these guys with name tags disabled

If you're a bandit/sniper wouldn't you want to play with that enabled so you can farm spawners/new players more easily?

Also how do you throw tin cans? Does it actually remove zombie aggro or just make them distracted and confused?

Where's the fun in that? If i'm going to be a bandit I want it to be a challenge! I want the odds to be even or stacked against me. It's not fun being a bandit on servers where you can see name tags or their location on maps.
I'm going back to playing on the US hardcore servers with STmovement and the sound mods enabled.

edit: Cycle to THROW with F and it will throw the cans.

I just can't imagine what it must be like for Rocket to roll into work lately. He is responsible for this huge sales boost and attention boon for Arma. Of course Arma 3 is in the works but they'd be fools to not acknowledge and readjust some resources for this growing mod. It seems like allowing Rocket to work on this full time would benefit BIS as a whole. You tell me DayZ will move to Arma 3 and I am buying that game day one.
