DayZ - zombie apocalypse online FFA permadeath survival Arma II mod

A couple of questions:

Anyone know how to get or use a map?

How many shots does it take to kill a survivor or a zombie with the pistol?

1. The in-game map you have to find like any other item. Alternatively there is an interactive map. To use the in-game map hit m, and it can be used in conjunction with a compass and GPS, both of which you will have to find.

2. No idea on survivors, but for zombies its one shot to the head or three shots to the body.

I'll help you with your blood... and your loot.

Edit: Stream stats for the last week:

You're the man Nix - I'm skipping out on Diablo, at least for a little bit this evening, to progress. Especially after the whole server debacle. Cherno was dead despite a full server. No Winchester though :/

When you guys aren't playing, do you find yourselves thinking about the cool shit they could potentially add to this? What's your wishlist of potential items and features they could add?

If more people used direct comms, i would love to stalk them while using a directional mic.

I keep getting this error message trying to join servers saying something about being dependant on downloadable content being installed or something. I followed every instruction perfectly, have it installed, running the combined operations .exe off of steam, with the proper launch command. WTF?

I really like the idea of factions/classes - medics, engineers, etc. I think Rocket mentioned it at some point. I also love the idea of fortifications that can be held/captured. Melee with durability/break system, more character look customization. I'd love to see traps in the game as well, but who knows how successful they'd be considering how vast the map is.

Lastly I really would love to see the game use different maps. Takistan would be incredible; probably difficult considering the terrain is a lot less flat and open.

So has Rocket received a bonus check + promotion yet?

He's getting the chance to make this more than a mod. I'm sure he'll make good money off the official game when it's finally released.

The trailer on DayZ official site is really fucking good. This mod will get big.

Agreed. It won't be a mod for very long though. About 6 more months. About 3 months until the Beta.

For those that haven't seen:

Visit Finland's countryside in September on a cloudy night and come tell me it's unrealistic, even after your eyes adjust you still won't see a thing, you won't even see your own legs when you look down.

I think an acceptable solution here would to just keep the cycles as they are, but get rid of moon phases and make every night a full moon. It's dark enough to take cover, but still bright enough to still play the game. Realism is cool. I like realism in games when appropriate. But I don't think we need to sacrifice functionality for realism in every instance. I don't like running around staring at a completely black screen any more than I like the idea of having to stop somewhere around a lake so I can find a nice rock to take a shit behind, and then scout for some leaves to wipe my ass with.

Some of the screenshots I've seen look fantastic, and some of you seem to have dialed down the graphics options by a ton.

This is using mostly Arma II assets, right?

Some people are using ARMA II free I bet. The retail version textures are drastically different. Like night and day as far as detail goes.

Anyway do you guys have a server you frequent, or just whatever is open?

Takes 30 mins to find a game that I can join.

Join game, oh yes!

Throw flare to find my way...

Immediately shot and killed.

FUCK!

This.

Us European folk need some day-time servers when it's late. I don't have time to play in the day, and trying to join US servers is a nightmare. Even if you do eventually get in, the lag is pretty bad.

I remember seeing some people post about it earlier in the thread. Said that the textures were lower quality (they are from what i've played) and you might get some missing object errors, but it is possible. As long as you also still have Operation Arrowhead.

I'm thinking about jumping in solo while I wait for the Diablo III servers to stabilize...just to get a feel for things so I dont get GAF killed.

I don't know what issues are coming from your side of the pond, but I've joined UK and EU servers from right here in the U.S(Hawaii) with ping as high as 250-350 ms and have yet to experience any problems with lag. There are instances of lag but it's never a hindrance. I don't see zombies teleporting around. Hawaii has some of the worst internet speeds in the US too. I have had problems on RU servers though. I've noticed ping isn't nearly as important for this as some would like to think. Would I prefere the fastest connection? Absolutely but it really hasn't been an issue for me at my current connections. What is your ping when trying to connect to servers?

Edit: to answer you question, I've been in a few servers where it seems to swap the day/night cycles do that more people can play during the day. Though I think you'll have to bounce around the servers to find which ones are day as they don't tell you on the server list.

Also, your not perceiving lag as when you shoot a zombie and it takes a second or two to fall down are you? As that ATM seems to be the case regardless of your connection speed.

Whats louder the Revolver or the 1911? Or are they the same since theyre both us 45 ACPs?
I've not noticed a difference in either as far as sound and aggro. I use the 1911 more when I have at least 5 mags for it but they both do the same damage and revolver ammo is way more abundant.

I was just on Chicago 6 and i'm in the UK, smooth as silk.

Man, Direct Chat is the way to play. So much more immersive, just wish it worked more consistently!
Climbed up to the roof of a Firestation in Electro and there was a Survivor up there (i'm bandit skin) we got to talking via Direct, scoped the city out and started to make our way to the Hospital when my connection fucked up. Shitty ADSL.

Figured as much. Have both right now with equal number of mags, 5 each, just did a run at Stary. So Im stocked up on Winchester slugs and food/water, but thought it excessive to have both pistols, guess Ill hold on to the 1911 in case I run into someone or run with some GAF guys later and Ill gift it to someone.

The revolver, and 1911 as well I guess, is amazing though.I Killed maybe 9 zombies while approaching and within Stary, but only once did I aggro any other zombies. Even during daylight and everything numerous occasions throughout the day I was forced to kill a couple of zombies within a big town and only that one time did it ever result in aggro and I could plainly see a number of other zombies within 20-30 meters of me.

Meanwhile earlier in the day within a small house, in a little town of like 4 houses, I had to fire off a winchester round when barely a zombie seemed to be around and when the smoke finally cleared I had killed 50+ zombies and was down to 4 rounds in my revolver and only 2600 blood. Thats when I made my move on Stary, killed a cow on the way there, got back up 9000 blood and ransacked the shit out of that market.

Getting tired of playing by myself now, especially with all the extra zombies. Takes forever just to check a city, and then usually there's only one or two enter-able houses, with no loot in them. After half a day of searching I might find a gun, but I'll almost certainly get shot by a bandit soon anyway.
Maybe I'll get on mumble, but I tend to feel like I'm just intruding on those chat programs since it's mostly the same group of people. That's why I prefer it when I can just use in-game voip, but that doesn't really work for this game.

Yeah once local is 100% i vote everyone use that instead of mumble. Big fan of local chat whenever possible, especially if it gets louder/quieter depending on distance.

Nah Gaf is Gaf.

Help me figure something out.

Everybody talks on the cyan letters, which is the Side Channel. When we talk about "local", we're talking about the channel we're actually in (which we change by pressing . on the keyboard), right?

There's a "Direct Communication" channel - that's the channel that's only readable by people near me? Is it supposed to be like that for both Audio and Text?

I believe voice chat (when you press capslock and the mic shows up) is bound to that channel in which you reside (either Side Channel, Direct Comm ou whatever other channels show up there).

Also, the Direct Communication channel don't always support voice, a bug related to ArmA II and not to DayZ.

Is any of that right?

Nah, the mumble group really doesn't feel like that at all though. I mean, I just jumped right into the group and started playing with whoever was closest to me. Sure, you generally get to hear a lot of different voices, but they are not some kind of tight knit group that is impenetrable to all and a lot of the times the people aren't even relatively close to each other.

I'm not as talkative as the others, but I know what you mean. Everyone is really chill though, and it's always a great time on Mumble. Hop on and hook up with everyone, your experience will improve exponentially.

Yeah thats what Direct chat is.

Ideally if/when they get their hands on the Arma 2 source code they will implement a Shout/Talk/Whisper system that both in Voice and text will attract zombies and then eliminate all the other chat channels. Its really breaks the immersion and is full of spam posts and since voice chat it doesnt actually work it really limits peoples ability to communicate properly. Mumbles great, but its really distracting and unrealistic to have a group of people constantly talking everywhere they go in a zombie infested city.

Yeah this game is borderline unplayable for me at night time without the moon, even with the gamma and brightness turned up you can't see anything at all. I just instantly quit out of any server I join where it's night. Some US servers are fine, but most are far too laggy.

Make sure you set your HDR setting to high or very high, otherwise turning your gamma and other stuff up still leaves the ground pitch black.

Connection issues are terrible for me here in the US. If they are getting an influx of new players they really should think about expanding. but given its a free mod i see that can be hard, i wish they would get some support though because of the popularity this mod is getting.

Though I'm hooked on base game now, been playing its single player because of the connection issues. This is a GREAT game on its own if you like military and realistic shooters.

You know, I think my favorite part of this game is simply the traveling around while alt+tabbing out every now and again to check the map. I've become a pretty damned good navigator and can generally gain my bearings within a very short period of time. Of course, I've learned not to trust certain other people when they tell me where they are *cough*LiquidMetal*cough*. :P

Spawned in: Hey... I didn't log off here..

Elektro with the hellish red glow.

Lone sniper atop building in Elektro. He wont last long.

Finally met up with the group. Creepy ass barn.

Hanging out at night

Enduin. Like a boss.

Epic group photo

Finally reached Stary Sobor. A peaceful night

I wouldn't worry about it. The DayZ mumble group is probably the chillest group in all da lands. We see new people every day.

My friend Evan at PC Gamer just posted a big interview with the DayZ creators. He's been playing the game just about every day for the past couple weeks, I think. Knows his stuff.

Tell Evan that having constant background music in the podcast is the worst thing possible. (Yes, it trumps a zombie apocalypse.)

If people want to PM me information they think people should know, I can start an OT instead of bugging the OP or a mod every time we need an update.

You should (or someone should) start an OT. Better centralized and focused info. The mod/game deserves it.

Man...game is creepy at night. I had no idea where I was, all I see are shadows and then I get hit and just started running blindly. 28 days/weeks later indeed.

I can sorta see at night but its still really damn dark on a cloudy night.

I have only seen one bandit, and never been sniped by anyone when tossing flares around like a newb. You guys must play on the ass hole servers. Now I'm afraid to use flares.

Is there any reason to go into the middle of the map?

All I keep hearing is "Keep the shore to your right."

I sort of want to just explore around the map, is this a viable option if you go solo? I might need to try and get in a group.
