DayZ - zombie apocalypse online FFA permadeath survival Arma II mod

I think fiddling with the HDR setting will help.
It definitely helps but I realized last night, playing on a plasma with proper blacks it won't make as big a difference. I had 2 Gaffers who could see me but I couldn't see anything until the moon came out. Luckily they were kind enough to be my seeing eye dogs with a couple chem lights.

I feel so close to you now, Wedge! <3

I do feel much closer to you now that I know what you look like.

This game is intense. Found a CZ550 in an earlier session. Wandered down the coast in the night, hiding in the forests and hills. Played a game of cat and mouse with a survivor who had a flashlight. He was freaked out by it, but I had no intention of actually harming him. He didn't really seem to know what was going on. He eventually stumbled upon me, saw my gun, and ran away typing 'please don't shoot me.'

Amused, I attempted to follow him, but lost sight of him quickly and ended up by the beach. A bandit shot me me in the back, but it wasn't a mortal wound. I spun around and saw him laying down about 30 yards away. He had been following me. I went prone, took aim, and shot him in the leg (but not before he put another two rounds in me). He disappeared around the corner, never to be seen again. I had lost much of my blood, but was stable. Thankfully the moon had come out, making it much easier to see.

Eventually I left my hiding spot and continued my journey down the coast. Someone fired off a couple rounds in the distance, so I ran to check it out. I had no luck, so I started back on my trek, only to walk right in front of the guy I had just been looking for. He was a survivor, so I only stared at him, but he took out his pistol and started firing, so I took him down. After watching him bleed to death, I raided his supplies, which were numerous. ALICE pack and map ahoy!

As I finished up with his body, another guy hiding in the woods stumbled upon me and my kill. Thankfully, he merely looked and then departed. I left the scene, a little richer, but more paranoid than ever. Then the server I was on restarted, ending my current exploits.

Hey I'm just wondering if my laptop can run this game + mod, or is I should even bother as is?

In my 25+ years of gaming I've always been a console gamer (can't get the hang of kb/m) & I'll probably be going PC next year or two due to the direction MS/Sony are headed next gen. I don't want to miss out on this experience but between having three kids, house renovations, mortgage, bills, and needing a new 50"+ TV, dropping 1k on a new PC isn't going to happen until next summer at the earliest. So please please please tell me I can run the game :(

PS: I'm PC dumb to boot!

PPS: would it be worth it to upgrade my ram, and/or get a new cheap video card?

I had been trying for about 30 minutes. Got into a game on a server with 76 slots, and 71 were filled. This is the largest server population I have seen at all in the list. But, I was able to play for about 45 minutes until I was taken out by a solo zombie that must have snapped my neck with one quick blow because it was over quick.

Myself, Crumbs and Foli were on a trek up north when we were attacked by a few Zeds, nothing that wasn't manageable, but I wasn't prepared for some Zed to blind side me and knock me into a tree. On my screen I instantly died, but on the others screens I was actually clipping in the tree. Lost a lot of good survival stuff too such as matches, compass, watch, hunting knife, all the stuff I needed to survive on my own on those quiet nights.

RPS interview

RPS: You must have been surprised that it was so popular. There’s forty-seven thousand people registered on the website stats now!

Hall: Well, I knew it would be popular within the Arma community. The Arma community is a really strong community, especially in its approach to innovation. They like to see new stuff come out, they get on board, and then they make new stuff in response. So I expected that, but what I didn’t expect was the crossover into the mainstream. Arma has never really had any crossover, because people write it off over little difficulties and don’t get to see what is underneath. But it has crossed over and coping with capacity has become my focus for the past two and half weeks. Every time we would upgrade something, it would be filled to capacity. We launched a server and it’d instantly be full up. We moved the website to a bigger server twice, and then to a cloud server. And it was like solving a traffic jam. We’d move the traffic from one intersection and it would move and jam somewhere else up. We haven’t had a chance to really think about what has been happening, we’ve just been dealing with that capacity issue.

RPS: Is there a ceiling you will hit from the persistent architecture of it? Can you keep upping capacity?

Hall: Well I know people are having trouble logging in, but that’s more to do with the interaction between the local server and their nodes. The persistence server can handle up to ten thousand concurrent connections, and we have peaked at five thousand. So that should be able to handle a lot more load. And I sort of think surely we couldn’t hit ten thousand concurrent connections, right?

i found a m1014, gk17 pistol, hunting knife, compass, food, fencing kit, toolbox, some other crap lol all found in cherno

oh and i got to the tallest tower in cherno and took pot shots at people crouching! lol didn't want to kill them though, just wanted to make life a little harder

In about 12 hours I've had this game for a full week. Looking like a really fucking strong GOTY contender. Even more if they manage to add actual goals.

Is there any reason to pick up CO over OA (which is $5 cheaper)?

Also, the mod works with the Amazon version of the game, right?

The mod runs on Arma 2 + OA, which is what Combined Ops is. There's a free demo version of Arma 2, I believe, that works with OA but it doesn't have any of the stability patches so it runs worse.

I understand that. Here's Operation Arrowhead for $9.99.

Are you saying Combined Operations has patches that just the Operation Arrowhead version does not? Because if not, I don't see why anyone would go with Combined Operations considering the cheaper option.

Do you already have Arma 2? If you do then you only need to buy OA.

If you don't have Arma 2 already then you'll need to buy both Arma 2 + OA (which is what Combined Ops is).

Arma 2 and Operation Arrow are separate things. So just buying Operation Arrow isn't enough. I'm not trying to be confusing, so sorry if I am.

We just had a very very tense fight against 4 other random people up in Stary. We lost 2 but they lost 4. Next time I'm gonna be a bit more aggressive as we had the jump on them. I lived but it sucks to hear my team lost some members.

No, the free version of ARMA II doesn't have those patches.

EDIT: Whoops sorry.

Does anybody knows whether it's possible to gift games on the US amazon to places outside the US? Or does everybody needs to make an US account?

Not having much luck with this game, for past 3 days I've been unable to connect, it just sits at Waiting for Server Response.

Whenever I ask about it I just get "omg its an Alpha" and "go away CoDboy", very irritating.

DayZ starts to bore me. I think I'll give it a month to grow. But surviving alone really doesn't work for me beyond the first 6 hours of a character.

Sure, you can start a new character, or build a helicopter. I don't think those are interesting propositions though.

I had a good time with it. I hope rocket can make this one shine.

I've been wanting to play DayZ for a long time now, but I have kinda been waiting for armaII:co to go on sale because I'm super broke. So I found out amazon has a sale for $15, but 'Game Downloads are only available to US customers' :(

how long do you let it sit there? if you're getting to that point without getting kicked or anything then it's most likely not on your end. The waiting for server response can take up to 5-8 minutes sometimes.

It may sound dumb, but just wait it out. I've waited for 20 minutes to connect to a server. In the end, it always works out.

This and the chkilroy videos might end up making me get into Arma 2...

Thanks :) There was a lot I didn't include, like the night and tank missions we did, messing around with different guns on the base, jumping into AA/Artillery guns and using a mortar. It's a great game.

I wish rocket would have stuck with the original plan of daily updates for DayZ

Slugs are single rounds, pellets are the classic shotgun spread.

You switch by opening your menu and choose "Load <Name of ammo>"

If it's like real life, the pellets will spread and be terrible beyond a couple yards, while a slug is essentially one large bullet. Slug would be like a normal rifle shooting a round.

do the pellets work ingame?
will I hit multiple zombies if I am close enough?

I find it is quicker trying several servers until you get in the game. I give it around 30 seconds-1 minute per server, if I'm not in I try another server. Usually gets me into a game within 5-10 minutes.

I have steam ARMA II, if I buy OA from Amazon what would I have to do to get DayZ working? Thanks

You would just download and install the Amazon AO. This would install as a separate stand-alone version separate to your Steam game. So, you may as well just uninstall your redundant ARMA II rental from Steam and enjoy having one less piece of DRM on your system.
