DayZ - zombie apocalypse online FFA permadeath survival Arma II mod

So seriously, what do you do once you're good with loot apart from fixing vehicles and reupping food and water?

Nothing, that's what. Unless you hunt players of some faction for some reason.

It's fucking depressing.

Yup. You are correct. But remember, this is alpha released to test servers and it got too popular too fast. He'll add goals

Dont know if it's been posted already but new changes incoming from rocket:

I can't wait until I'm desperately searching for medical supplies or food and all I keep coming upon are piles of clothes and steel bolts. :D

EDIT: Super helpful post mik83kuu. Awesome work.

Yeah, that's why I told myself that it would be better for my level of enjoyment to wait for a month or so until this mod has some legs to it.

I mean, my MO was getting loot, stumbling aimless through the forest for a bit 'cause it's kinda fun, then getting to the coast to help survivors, then getting shot in some overcrowded city.

The MOST fun I've had was helping some decked-out guy who's been shot to shit to find animals so that he could get up to speed again.

Not good enough, sorry. Stranded 2 looks like shit, there's no multiplayer on this level, and it STILL manages to be the better survival game. This is not really a survival game, it's more of a survival preparation game.

And you can't properly prepare anyway because the best the game has to offer is stocking up on food in some tent. But food respawns, so in reality, you just have to chill near a town and go through houses from time to time.

Survival is about how you manage to get by when there's nothing, and that for months. I feel like the mod doesn't even have a shot at getting there.

It's really awesome for 6 hours on a character, that's how I feel like. And that's already a great accomplishment. The social interaction thing IS new, and it IS exciting, but after a couple of weeks, you know what to expect, so the dynamics have played themselves out, which in effect makes it pretty deterministic. Just look at mik83kuu's post.

Edit: Lol, reading. You're mik83kuu.

- You can fill empty water bottles in the ocean or in wells in backyards

- You can sometimes fill empty water bottless in ponds and lakes, but not always (Also IRL you'd never want to drink stagnant water)

Pfffft, as if you'd voluntarily drink sea water either! ;)

Great list of tips for newcomers though, takes ages to learn that stuff on your own.

You can definitely swap primary weapons between your bag and your person. I did it with a crossbow and a Winchester for a while but stopped doing it because it is a huge waste of space.

I also think opening your bag when in a loot pile is great because it give you the icon break down view of your bag and you can quickly drop loot directly from your bag into the loot pile. This also makes it way easier for someone else to grab because it avoids the clipping issues that often occur with dropping gear.

Also, if you are playing in a group epi pens are just as important to have on your person as the meds and bandages. Not much time to revive your buddies.

Update coming this weekend, likely to be soon once the amount of users currently playing drops:

Respawns of zombies adjusted
New equipment interaction system from gear menu
Maybe more. Won't be patched now (its peak time, 5.5k concurrent), once it dips down.

Had another awesome session. Made my way up from the coast to the big airfield, all by myself. Got myself some supplies on the way. It was getting dark, man that's creepy in those forest. Got attacked to multiple times.

Still, I rather easily found my there, got lost in the end because of the total darkness but didn't take long. So I asked around if more people were there, no responses... I fight my way up in the control tower, mowing down horde upon horde. Because of the darkness I lit up a flare, which immediately made 2-3 people ask who the fuck that was. It was me, bitches. I went down again and fought my way into a hangar. There they were, but luckily they were friendlies. One of them even added me on Steam. After getting some supplies I decided that was enough for today.

Love this mod.

If the humanity rating stays around and the skin system gets implemented it would be cool to have a feature where there are skins that you can find that have a humanity requirement for wearing them, be it negative or positive. If you wanted to you could show off just how many players you've killed or vice versa.

If anyone is keen to hook up jump on Mumble > DayZ > Side Party 2 and we can go from there.

I can play on most servers just not ones based in UK/EU/SE etc as they give me 300-500 ping. US is fine even though I am based in New Zealand.

See the post above yours, hunt survivors and go on killing sprees. :P It's a human hunting simulator, kinda.

So I was reading this thread a few days ago, and I saw people mentioning a upcoming game(or was it multiple games) similar to DayZ, but I can't find it now.

Can anyone fill me in?

Someone is making one with the cryengine 3 software. Called Sector 23.

can I just ask if any folk are having issues with Windows 7 64bit? Having that installed on my PC so doing a check just in case there's an issue?

Longest route I've ever walked. Most of it is with others. Most of it is during shitty nights with rain pooring. But that was the only way we thought to be save at the airfield.

One of my buddies got shot by a bandit. I quickly too revenge. AFter my other buddy found an M60 (or equivalent) and I found NVG's on my victim's body, I got shot by a sniper. Probably also with an NVG. Probably the all the way we were there. My buddy with the machinegun disconnected so he's the only one still left. We started off with 6.

Servers are still packed?

They are. But I haven't had any problems with logging in. It was quick and easy on all servers.

Found a youtube vid after the name was mentioned above. Nothing really much to see though, certainly no action although the site I read it on reckons a Beta has been around for awhile.

My life is now complete since I finally got to meet up with some of you guys. Of course our looting ended up failing as I left with less stuff but that's the awesome nature of this game. I still have my guy sitting in the car part building at that airfield with a low blood count and a shaking screen with one magazine for my Makarov...lol

Here are my tips for newcomers and experienced people alike. I have played almost 100 hours of this amazing game over the last 8 days and I feel like these are the essential tidbits everyone needs to know. Please read them all, as they are not in any order:

- You can't succesfully put primary weapons in your bag

This isn't true. You can put primarys in your bag. To retrieve it, you have to drop your equipped primary on the ground. (since the way inventory works is if there isn't space, things get deleted.. and since you can only hold one primary... it gets deleted)

Startled someone at the control tower. He tells me he's friendly. I exit the building and I just get out, I hear a grenade going off.

I call him out. He logs off. Bad.

Hang on, you walked out and he threw a grenade or you threw a grenade and walked out casually with said explosion behind you?

*Cue Michael Bay direction, slow motion staunch walk towards the viewer with big fuck off fireballs behind you*

Not always true, I can switch just fine between my semi auto shotgun and M16 using the ALICE pack, no ammo disappearing either.

BUT there is one significant bug where if you pick up a primary weapon off the ground that uses the same ammo as your current primary you will lose all the ammo you had, happened to me when I switched to a different M16.

He tried to kill me with said grenade. :(

Yeah, if you want to switch primaries, open your bag then hit arrow to send primary from bag to person. It will automatically switch the weapons and ammo. Never put items from person to bag with a full bag. That is when they go to the big loot pile in the sky. Didn't know about that same weapon glitch. Good to know.

Man.... I am so glad we finally met up with you. For a while there, I thought you were actually a ghost that we would never be able to see who was just haunting us from the grave.

---

I also think I've finally discovered my role within the group- the equipment manager. My bag is always filled with useful goodies for those members of the group who have made their way up to the main group from the coast. Blood bags, knives, compasses, watches, binoculars, matches, maps, and, most important of all, full canteens. You all mocked me when I said I was carrying about 6 canteens, but who all did you come to when you were dying of thirst? That's right, your grubby little hands were in the bearded merchant's pack. :P

I'm the guy that picks up every tire, gas can, scrap metal I see in the event that I find a fixable vehicle. So far the servers are too unstable to spend sufficient amount of time finding a fixable vehicle, and then searching for parts.

bah. logged in at night and saw two survivors at a distance with a flare. pulled out my binoculars and started to see what they were doing and someone shoots me after 5 seconds.

Nah, I'm like you and stock up on a ton of water and food in my pack if it's big enough so I don't have to worry about running out if I get caught up in something else. Last night, I was simply trying to meet up right after I spawned so I didn't have any goodies so I was looking for handouts in the food department once we got to the airfield, lol.

I'm afraid of what's going to happen when I log on tonight and spawn there with little ammo, no food or water, and a screen shaking so much that it's impossible to shoot anything. I'm basically just waiting for the grim reaper to come take me away.

I can tell you that I enjoyed the game 10000 times more once I finally rolled with a group because it changes the game drastically. I'm just lucky I remember what happened last night...lol

Goddammit.. Was in Novy Sobor, game kept crapping out on me. Finally, after numerous restarts, some survivor was around my spawn location, shot me. (I'm decked out, of course. That guy has hit the jackpot. W/e)
Then, I respawn, and I'm at the fucking Cherno docks. Where every second building produces random triangles when I look at them. (No, my graphics card is fine.)

So it starts to rain walls of water and the framerate goes to shit.

Pointless to go on, really. This character is useless. Even if the game was playable, the dude would NEVER get out of Cherno alive. Why bother?

As an aside, I keep getting this new error: Sometimes, the game suddenly goes into "Receiving...", and receives in a loop that never ends. I had this while zombies attacked me, and the logic kept on working, so they reduced me to pieces while I really just could Alt-Tab out and kill the process. Has anyone of you had this one? It breaks everything!

When im installing the mod with Six Updater for the non Steam version, the "Operation Arrowhead" folder is named "Expansion" and its inside the regular ArmA2 install folder correct? I'm looking for an OA folder and I can't find one.

Ok, finally got it working and running at a playable framerate.

What's the "acceptable" channel to do voice chat in? Me and the dude i was running around with were talking in the blue channel and people got pissed at us

I need both Arma 2 and Operation Arrowhead correct? Debating between this just for DayZ and Civilization IV Complete..

Yep, apparently you can get it to work with Operation Arrowhead and the free version of Arma 2, but the textures are worse.

I think Direct Chat, but it's kinda broken at the moment. As far as I know, voice chat is a bit pointless right now unless you're using something like mumble.

I've noticed an odd trend in this game between Australian and American servers.

Australian servers seem to be absolutely filled with arseholes, racists, homophobic wankers. Like, I guess that's not super surprising. But it's also just really aggressive. I never feel I can trust anyone, and in nearly all of my interactions with other people, that feeling is completely justified.

American servers, on the other hand, seem super relaxed. I've teamed up with huge parties and gone bushwhacking. There are still a few jerks trying to murder everything, but at least they're civil about it.

It could just be the early morning crowds are a bit more enjoyable. As the only time I'll pop around to the American servers is around 5am (their time) because the australian ones have gone #000000 dark.

Just an observation.

So I dropped it to Very Low settings and it still doesn't run very well. Is that just because of how open it is?

Open Advanced
Set AA to None
Set Postprocessing to None
Set VSync to No
Set Visibility to something like 1600 or lower

Will lowering visibility change the distance at which you can see other players?

Also -- What is your DayZ account tied to? Your CD-Key?
I just purchased a second copy of A2:CO for my laptop so i can have a friend play with me.
Do i need to uninstall the current version or could a registry CD-Key change do the trick?

Yup, it's the time thing. I work nightshift so I logon to Aussie servers around 5am your time and the people are great. Seen a few regulars since I started, everyone seems welcoming and chatty. I refuse to logon in the evenings when your schools are out over there. Doesn't matter which country, it's all the same, those bloody kids that think they're the next k/b warrior from Armageddon with a coat of invincibility.

Those maps with the red lines showing your travel.... is that a mod/application that keeps track of that stuff or are you guys making those in paint with your freaky mutant minds that remember a path through a swath of trees that look identical?
