DayZ - zombie apocalypse online FFA permadeath survival Arma II mod

It's all good. It was awesome while we had it, and I'm sure we'll get another one some other time.

Yeah, the engine seems to be the only thing that's really hard to get, maybe the rotors. Finding/fixing a car and driving around, it shouldn't be too difficult to repair a helicopter.

That sucks. Fuel usually doesn't burn up too quickly in vanilla ArmA 2 unless you're full throttle all the time so he must have tweaked it to make it that much harder to get a helo up and running. It's like the end-game content of DayZ! lol

Disclaimer: Never take anything I say seriously. I'm the biggest smartass around and the military and then medical problems only made me worse. I figured I'd warn everyone just in case someone takes me seriously one of these days and shoots me ingame, lol.

Broken told me all about you, I'm shooting you next time I see you.

Zombies attracted to flares and chem lights = death sentance now when playing at night without night vision. = (

Edit: my avatar has never been so fitting!

Man, I feel like a damned mechanic in this game. 99% of my time in DayZ is spent searching for parts and then hauling them all the way north from Cherno or vice versa to get a vehicle in working condition. When we do get lucky enough to find a chopper, refueling it takes like two hours even with eight jerry cans going back and forth. You know what? Those few minutes of time after we've completed our work and finally get to enjoy the thing we built before we blow the fuck up is totally worth it.

Oh, and for those of you wondering how it all turned out:

Hahaha how did that happen? Hit a tree?

Luckily, I don't see anyone that often since I usually die 20 times on the way to meet up with the group so I might be okay...lol

Shooting me is like bumping an inmate's execution up one day ahead of schedule. It's pointless because it's going to happen no matter what. :D

I think this game may actually kill me. Spending 3 hours trekking through the wilderness and towns, to hear a sniper shot ring off from the distance and see the dirt in front of me pop. Full blown sprinting into the nearest piece of cover, cowering with my Winchester and makerov. Or trying to defend the school in ekektro from 200 zombies running in because you thought it was a good idea to fire a lee Enfield.

My heart goes from placid to full blown adrenalin panicking in less than a second.

I don't think I've ever been this scared in a game, ever. It does what penumbra, amnesia, stalker and cryostasis never did. It makes me fucking terrified. Genuinely, absolutely, cold sweat terrified. And because of the pacing, that feeling stays for around 10 minutes while I'm trying to plan out my escape or recovery.

This game, man.
I find it might be helpful in such games to die a few times. A zombie dog in some game may be scary, but if you let it actually catch you two or three times and discover you just respawn afterwards and the game (and world) doesn't end, it might not be as scary, just a game mechanic.

Hello all. Newbie here ( I have played a small amount of Arma2 ). I have downloaded all the required files and will start the install process tonight.

Just a quick couple of questions:

NOTE: I will be soloing the game at first, while I try to learn the initial aspects of the game.

1) Any suggested survival guides? I found this one. It was very helpful; Just looking for more articles or videos like it.

2) Video's of talented players? Either streams or videos of talented players of the game, that I can watch and possibly pickup some best practices.

3) Any tips on initial navigation when you are w/o maps and compasses? I assume looking for landmarks is about the only thing you can do.

I apologize if these questions have been covered before. I appreciate the info linked in the OP.

Thank you. :)

#1 tip: when you see a road or train tracks, follow them. You'll find your first loot fast.

#2 tip: Never travel on roads or railway lines directly. You'll get sniped in a second.

Give it time and you'll learn landmarks, which power lines to follow, etc etc. Use one of the maps in the OP and read sign posts.

Tip #3

If you see me or another player asking for someone to bandage them in a remote town it is a trap.

There is more then likely a sniper far in the hills just observing the town from the safety of 800m.

Thank you all. Those tips will come in handy.

I will have the maps in the OP pulled up on a second screen while I am attempting to navigate w/o getting killed. :)

I disagree. Using the map will help you when you begin.

I can see why some people would like a "Pure" experience without it, but I think most people will benefit from it.

Man, I'm really liking this game but my POS machine is really ruining the experience.

It will work at perfectly playable framerates for about 20 minutes and then just tank into slideshow territory, I tried turning my video memory to default as someone suggested earlier in the thread, but that didn't do anything. Anyone know any other tips that might help improve performance?

Your temps okay? Could be overheating on your CPU or GPU.

I can't figure out why sometimes when I press W to go forward my character sprints, and sometimes I have to hold SHIFT to sprint.

I've also seen backpacks on dead bodies, and whenever I look inside them it seems like there's nothing to take. Is this right?

There is a toggle sprint option by tapping it twice I believe, also you can sprint with two times W I think. And maybe many players aren't using backpacks, the inventory system is quite bad.

Double tapping W is sprint so maybe you're doing that without realising. Double tapping Shift changes between run/walk default.

Tip# whatever: Hold ALT and move the mouse to look around, release ALT and your view snaps back.

edit: A lot of people probably don't even realise you can put stuff in your backpack.

I re-mapped the free look key to my Mouse #4 button. Seems more logical to be on the mouse.

I love just clicking it and having a look around as I run about, or using it to look over my shoulder as things chase me.

One of the most important buttons in the game, probably.

How do I put stuff in my backpack?

Also, thanks for the tip. Any other crucial control tips you wanna point out for newbies like me?

In your inventory, click on your backpack, then click "open" down the bottom. It will change the slots to just your backpack and you can put things in there.

Only things on your person can be used. EG: Move food from backpack to your body when you want to use it.

I see no appeal of playing on the night-time servers. You can't see shit

Because it's fuckin terrifying! :D I love sneaking through the big cities in the middle of the night.

Also it's safer when travelling between towns, it's harder for players/zombies to see you.

Finally, is this game pretty taxing for anyone else's setup? I'm currently playing Alan Wake maxed out on my machine, but I've had to play DayZ with a combination of High/Normal (mostly High), yet it still hiccups pretty bad when I enter towns. What are some of the most taxing settings that I should consider turning down even further?

Without us there would be big real danger.

We bandits only make up 10 percent of the player vase yet we get blamed for most of the kills.

As long as I'll run into more friendly players than bandits everythings fine. Still sad when one of you kills me.

I'm trying to wrap my head around the inventory system, but it seems like it's just janky.

Oh well, still a lot of fun.

I prefer nighttime servers. Bandits can't see you from miles away.
They (and zombies after the patch) can see you if you have any light. Or if the bandits have night vision (and bandits are presumably most likely to have night vision) they can see you then also.

And you presumably won't be able to travel or sneak around anyway if there's no light and you don't light yourself up -- too much risk of falling off a small drop and dying, or walking directly into a zombie.

Yes, it's a very taxing game.

The confirmed changes for update 1.5.8 so far:

The alt-f4 fuckers getting sorted this time round.

Is that what it means? Nice. Because yesterday me and my buddy had one hell of a gunfight with a bandit that was ambushing us in the apartment buildings in cherno. I have no clue how I managed to get up the stairs and into the adjacent room without being killed. From the room I started to yell Bandit! and my buddy came upstairs blasting away with his AK. I bet he peppered the bandit because his attention was aimed at me. He died slower than I thought, only to disappear after the goddamn player disconnected.

I only kill for supplies ( beans, Pepsi, etc) travel in groups of more then 2. I really do not attack groups of 3 or more unless I am desperate.

If I do I take only one out and the group eventually leaves. When they leave I can retrieve beans.

Download Core Temp and MSI Afterburner to make sure.

The times I've had problems like you've described it's been heat related every time. Though I'm a desktop gamer so I'm not sure how likely these problems are for laptops.

The inventory systems seems pretty simple to me for the most part. Can't really see how people are having a lot of trouble with it. There is some jank, but I don't think it is entirely bad. I only wish you could pick up the various parts and jerry cans and put them directly into your bag instead of clearing up room in your general inventory, then picking up the part, and finally being able to put the part in your bag once you have already put the rest of your junk away.

I can see some improvement especially when trying to organize, drop, and pick things up. It took me a bit to get used to it, but once you figure it out its not so bad. But I'm glad he is improving it.
