DayZ - zombie apocalypse online FFA permadeath survival Arma II mod

I have no desire for aaaany of it except this mod, making the package cost-prohibitive. Really too bad, I love this thread :(

I only had to "pay" 10 bucks I had in a coupon for OA, I'm rocking Arma 2 free (textures don't matter when I'm mostly gaming in the wife's laptop) and the game is like nothing I've played before.

"Story" time! (corrections are welcome, english is not my birth language)

I decided to roam the fields with my knife, matches and hatchet. Found LOTS or loot, and a CAMO suit(with the water bug too! but it only duplicated my stuff yay!). All went to hell in Zelenogorsk where due to a server glitch I randomly died.

I got really mad and respawned in Balota, and decided to go back for my stuff. Everything was going according to keikaku and I was going round Drozhino when from nowhere I got sniped and killed THAT fast. I was SO mad...

And I respawned in Otmel. Still mad about losing my best loot ever and blinded by rage I started to run towards Zelenogorsk. I swear, the wife is going to have to fix the "W"key after all that running through forest after forest. Made a stop in a barn to deal with the 6 zeds that followed me god knows from where, and I was in Zelenogorsk again. Found my corpse, with all my loot! And when I tried to pick it up... I COULDN'T. There are no words. No words I tell you...

So, respawned in Kamenka, what I like to call my hometown(hey, I've never been shot in Kamenka). I was feeling down so I started to run towards Cherno aggroing zeds here and there when I had my first meaningful survivor encounter. After I passed the airstrip some guy saw me and started to run with me, firing at the zeds! He was killing them! I started too shoot them too, but they were too many and too fast. We crossed a gas station(slowing them down in the process) and went up the forest when I ended the last one. I couldn't see him so I told him "thanks, you saved me" in global when he told me "I'm here up the hill, I think I'm dying"(I also learned that his name was Yattsu). I couldn't see him and he was about to throw a flare when I saw the message "Yattsu was killed". And I couldn't save him! RAGE. I felt so useless! Some random guy decided to help me and because of that choice he died! That touched me. Walked to Cherno, and went to the apartments looking for loot still recovering from the whole ordeal when I read a message from Bane: "need blood transfusion". That's it, I'm gonna help that guy. For Yattsu.

He told me in global that he was near the west hospital(very close to where I was) so I waited for him. After some akward moments I convinced him in global that I wasn't going for the PK and he told me that he was going to blast the window to get the blood while I covered his back from the many zeds roaming the streets. I should've known better when I saw the shotgun on his back and thought "that looks familiar", but it only took me a fraction of a second to remember after I heard it, way louder than the crashing window. Lee Enfield, my nemesis, we meet again. And welcome back, zed herd. Bane run for his life, I was surrounded. I met dead fending off the zeds.

I respawned near Balota, not even mad. Bane was still calling for help and he had to wait for me now, unless some other guy helped him before. Went to the airfield tower to get a decent weapon, found an AK with 30 rounds. Hear down shots and lots of zombies, yelled "friendly" in global chat (lol) and went downstairs. Two guys were being pummeled by what, 20 zeds? I didn't even realized when I yelled "for Yattsu!". Wasted ALL my ammo(makarov included) dealing with the fucking zeds and saved both survivors, and they gave me some of their loot in reward. Felt good man. I told them that I was going to help bane, again, they agreed to go together as far as they could. We chatted along the way and had to be careful because a sniper was taunting us. In the meantime some other guy , Ballard, was trying to help Bane, but had a glitched bag of blood so I still had some time. We were entering Cherno when a zed aggroed and hell broke loose again. I had no ammo so I run towards the west hospital, went inside an apartment building, picked up some ammo and wasted the 6 zeds that were following me. Went outside and to my surprise, Ballard was guarding my corpse, with all my stuff! Not even a bean was missing! Felt good man. Turned out Bane disconnected to try to fix the glitched blood bag, and Ballard needed a blood transfusion too.

We went inside the hospital and while I was giving Ballard the transfusion, another guy showed up. He needed blood too and was reading all my story in global. I was giving him a transfusion when we heard shots outside. A couple of guys that we were chatting with too were suddenly guarding the hospital from the streets, fending off a bandit and killing him. "The more friendlies, the better" they said. Yattsu logged in again but he was in electro, and in no time he was surrounded by zeds inside a building and in bad shape again. I told him that he changed my life, that I had to save him and that I was on my way and he said "no use, no blood, no food, no ammo" and ended himself. Felt bad man. We chatted on global for a little while and before logging off I said goodbye to everyone I chatted with.

This game.

Late night Gaf-Crew was flying high!

WTF is this? I just had to go play Dota instead of DayZ after the conferences.... damn. You didn't crash it, did you?

Shoulda came back man. I was missin' you; we lost the jeep when I had to take a break to deal with my brother (who locked himself out of his car in the middle of nowhere) and somebody apparently hit a rock getting a wheel stuck in the ground.

But, helicopter.
And no, it's safe and sound.

Edit: Oh also guys, I got footage of the whole thing; voices worked after all, even mine.
I'll put it up when I can, but it'll take some editing.

I checked on the website but it says the free version does not support user mods, does that mean I'd have to buy it for this mod to work?

you can combine a free version + Operation Arrowhead but you'll get more bugs, shitty graphics and so on. Not worth it, imo.

It's boring without the side channel, to be honest. I want to talk with random people again :(

It's a fucking cesspool that should never have existed. Good riddance.

That being said.. I can use RCON to speak to the whole server. Trolololol.

I NEED INPUT FROM PEOPLE:

But now, it's really ridiculously difficult to connect with other people. Before, I got all sorts of new friends by being cooperative. Now, I'm all alone in Paradise City (Berezino), and all that's left is zombie hunting and the occasional PVP. Coop seems to have gotten out of the equation.

I think that's fucked. I don't want to roll with the same 5 dudes over and over again. And everyone I don't know is scared to get close.

Really not feeling it at this point.

Don't tell me to go to Elektrochernokovsk, it's even WORSE down there.

Welcome to the experiment. This was known to be coming for awhile.

People need to stop thinking DayZ is like your average game. Eventually Rocket is going to change something that goes against the conventions of a normal game and you'll be very disappointed.

I can't wait to see how this affects bandits and PKing. No more bullshit luring.

Well, it sucks ass. I mean, I didn't know before if it was good or bad without the side, and wanted it to go away to figure it out, but it's basically either a singleplayer game if you're out in the woods, or a suicide simulator if you're creeping through the southern cities.

And don't tell me I'm somehow not worthy of the mod for not liking the complete disconnection. It's fucking atrocious to go online, collect something to eat and drink, then stalk around an empty city, shooting zombies out of boredom. And the alternative is even worse - randomly being killed in loot central because people don't know how to deal with others online.

Different doesn't mean good. It's dumb as fuck like this. Complete waste of time.

Big cities are death traps. So are airfields. My friend and me have done our best run yet, surviving deep inland (don't stay close to the beach), hitting small towns, barns and deer stands.

Had to go to cherno (i think) because we were low on blood (6k each) and we couldn't find any animals (really put some animals in the game rocket..). Heard shots upon arriving. Having no choice we went towards the hospital where someone was lying waiting on the opposite building. Thankfully his aim was lousy and we were lucky.

Both of got hit but lost a couple of thousand blood units and he drew a bunch of zombies on him. I got behind the hospital and my friend got some blood. So we got full again and then i sprinted across the two buildings. He followed me in his sights and my friend leaned out and shot him dead. Unfortunately we couldn't loot him because we heard someone else in there as well and didn't think it was worth the trouble since we are pretty well set up at the moment.

Lately I've mostly been using TX8, although the last few times I've been on there I've suffered from pretty bad performance. How often do you restart the server?

I peeked in there today and at the NW Airfield I had 12 FPS and on the other several servers I had been in the past two days, I always got 60 FPS. You are not alone :-)

The design of the game obviously doesn't suit what you expect from a game and that's understandable. I'm not going to say you're not worth of it or that you don't "get it." It's just a difference of taste between you and the design decisions Rocket is making. Maybe he'll go back on that decision or maybe he won't.

The unfortunate side of this whole thing is that Rocket is truly running this as an experiment and people are still looking at it as a mod that should be a full fledged game. He won't give up the control he has now. You can tell he likes to change things as he pleases and see what the results are regardless of player response. It definitely sucks for those who come in and find the game at a point that appeals to them, only to have a change come through that fundamentally changes the game and fucks up their whole experience.

I'm not going to tell anyone "LOL! Good riddance!" or anything like that, I can only imagine how annoying it can be, especially if you bought the game just for this. But, projects like this don't happen in the industry and this one is very much needed to show that a permanent death game where you give the players very little help is a viable design.

The only alternative I can offer you is a server that posts a general TS/Vent/Mumble for the entire server. I jokingly suggested this to the GAF group, but I Gaffers like their clique.

Lately I've mostly been using TX8, although the last few times I've been on there I've suffered from pretty bad performance. How often do you restart the server?

Unfortunately the Server Monitor program had its auto-restart feature pulled. I do hop on about two or three times a day to check the resource monitor and restart accordingly.

You might see increased performance. I was updating some config settings this morning and noticed that our default parameters that were set up with the server only have our "CPUCount=" set to 2, but we have 4 available. Hopefully this means improved performance for everybody.

If there was enough interest and donations for the server, then I'd consider renting a dedicated machine (~$150) for the next 3-6 months. I'd be willing to take on 50-60% of the cost if people really want to see improved performance. We could look into pushing for vehicles too.

I can only imagine how annoying it can be, especially if you bought the game just for this.

I don't feel entitled or anything; I've played ArmA for years. OA was on the list anyway.

I'm just not digging it when I can't actually meaningfully interact with others I don't know.

Edit: The experiment angle enables me saying it's dumb as shit in the first place, that can't be repeated often enough either. Don't take this as the Gaming Jesus revelation. I certainly don't. I'm not even sure there's a trajectory at this point anyway, going by the last patches, apart from the (commendable) technical improvements, it mostly seems like rocket is poking at it with a stick.

It sounds like one person is saying 2/3 of people are friendly, another says literally 11/12 survivors shot at them.

But assuming that's just normal server variability, the thread in common I see is that zombies don't sound like much of a threat anymore since their numbers went back down. Do they not chase people using chemlights and flares enough to be dangerous, or are they just so few that everyone can still focus on PKing?

I think there's still enough new people that zombies in Cherno/Elektro are often displaced by a newbie who walked into town without thinking twice. When we were in Cherno we saw multiple people running away from packs of 15-20 zombies.

Use direct comms. Or am I missing something?

I think he means in text or on a more general scale (Side/Global). Rocket probably should have included ACRE with the removal of side chat.

Use direct comms. Or am I missing something?

That's a proximity chat. How are you supposed to convey your friendliness in a meaningful manner if it only bridges up to like 20m? Of course you're gonna get shot if you approach and get spotted.

The side channel made it possible to say "Hey dude, I'm not gonna shoot ya" across a couple of blocks or across a couple of kilometers, and that brought a social dynamic along that is completely lost now.

My opinion obviously is that it's for the worse, the result is complete isolation and dependance on people you have on your friends list or whatever.

Seriously, I don't want to go into the woods IRL and shoot people from the treeline. I don't need excessive restrictions that mimic real-life conditions. And especially the restriction of "you can only talk to people close to you" sounds really interesting until you experience it. But it's still a reduction of means to communicate. So you end up being a loner, or running with the same old group. What else can you do? Everyone else is gonna fuck you up before talking to you, just to be on the safe side.

The direct comm is awesome in and of itself, it doesn't eliminate the need for global comm in some form though. The game being a glorified chatroom is sort of the point of it all in my opinion.

I want the side channel to be optional for the player.

I only got my friends into the game the past couple of days, before that I managed to survive completely alone never grouping and make it day after day once I learned how to do it, and honestly it was an amazing time.

The biggest problem is everyone runs straight into the major cities when after two or three deaths you should have realized that its completely pointless to ever go in there in the first place. Everything you need can be found in smaller towns, all of which I never see anyone in.

After my first day in, I decided to play as the lone survivor that had lost everyone and everything, but out of pure defiance I refused to die. When I spawned in I booked it for the woods and kept heading into the North West, blending into the massive forests the game offers. I hit smaller towns for supplies, never seeing another soul as I moved. When I cleared out one small village I would keep moving, never stopping between towns and never staying in one spot for too long. I managed to find automatic weapons, alice packs, map, compass, watch, binoculars, silenced pistol and enough food and water to survive for a week without hitting a town. I hit ponds to refill my water and then would sprint back into the woods. It's extremely easy to survive alone, and I could almost argue it's easier as you never have to worry about someone else making a mistake and alerting a horde of zombies or giving away your position to other players.

To be honest, I don't think most of the problems are with the game, it's the players. People treat this as a persistent version of Left 4 Dead, or super happy zombie fun time. I can't tell you how many people I have seen in the past sprinting through Chern or Electro at full speed as I watch from the hills with my rifle, or instead of sneaking around, shoot every zombie they see and wonder why they constantly die.

It's all about playing smart, if 50 people are online, it should be pretty obvious that heading into a major city is a terrible idea and you are going to die. I survived for days without playing with a single person, and was armed very well. The only reason I died is because I did not know about the skin bug and wound up in the ocean when I logged in.

I dislike the side chat honestly as I just see it as a tool for griefers. I can't tell you how many people I have seen use it to lure people in with the promise of blood packs, food, ammo, and gear only to execute the people they promised to trade with. Not to mention new people time and time again give away their position by asking silly questions like "GUYS...SHOOTING IN ELECTRO...FRIENDLY!!!" That kind of silliness would get you blasted in real life in this type of situation, not overly surprising it does in game as well. I learned very quickly about asking people friendly or not. I used to run near them and ask, which nearly resulted in my death every time. So I adapted, and now if you ever seem me ask if you are friendly, it means I have my rifle aimed at your head from very far away.

Yes, I also had an amazing time doing the same. Up to a point. This point.

I have a fuckin' automatic rifle with a flashlight attached on my back, the best non-silenced handgun from what I know, bloodpacks and stuff out the ass.. What I want is help OTHERS survive, because I'm good.

Preferably completely foreign people, it's more interesting that way. I dunno.

I get that, but that's a valid social dynamic, and it's one you can adapt to in a lot of ways. So for example, you can seemingly fall for it, but then assault the luring dude by playing smart. Or you can actually help people for reals, like I did. Or whatever. These dimensions are now not in there anymore.

So I adapted, and now if you ever seem me ask if you are friendly, it means I have my rifle aimed at your head from very far away.
Nope, that's not possible without the side channel. Either you're close, or you're not asking. Sorry!

Yea I can understand the allure of playing with other people, especially ones you don't know.

The way I see it, is they are going for a high level of realism. If this were a real life situation, I would have no way to communicate with people on the other side of the map, and asking who's shooting is pretty much akin to running around with a loudspeaker. Really it doesn't bother me either way if they removed it or left it in, I've learned to play without it but I still do use it for answering questions and such.

Maybe if they wanted to meet halfway they could add in a channel where people can join if they want, or just add the option to turn off side chat for those who do not wan't to see it. I'm all for giving people options.

Nope, that's not possible without the side channel. Either you're close, or you're not asking. Sorry!

Then I'll just avoid them, or kill them if they approach and don't say anything in direct. I think the biggest thing is no one uses voip in direct, and I'm not even sure it works correctly if at all. I always use it because it's far faster than typing, and really who doesn't have a mic nowadays that's a gamer?

"Hey! Are you friendly in Elektro?"

Side channel should not work across the map. I don't give two fucks about what is going on in Elektro when I am not there and it only opens the game up for trolling by people nowhere near the area.

"No, and if you move, I'll shoot."

The simplest solution came to mind. Obviously the game is aware of what region you're in since it notifies you upon entering the game, why not have area specific chats? I think it would be a fair compromise between not having a server wide chat, but having something to help (or not..) communicate.

I'm really against an entirely global system because of how it can be exploited. Luring is awesome for bandits, but it doesn't fit the theme of the game at all. You're stranded, must scavenge and survive. Oh, there's also these people who can talk across the entirety of the server for the purpose of fucking with others. I don't get how people think that "fits" the systems in place. That would only be the case if the comm towers were in play and there was a global radio channel.

As someone who's very new to this mod, it's really interesting to see you guys react so differently to the latest changes. Being a clean slate is nice sometimes.

I had a handful of spawns in which I ventured into Cherno and Elektro for the experience. Several Benny Hill exits were had - and a mandatory senseless PK. Some cruel bastard found me crawling away from some zombies, ran up and unloaded his Makarov into my person. Harsh but, considering where I was, expected.

What's so great about Berezino?

Far more journeys accompanied this exploration.

Through towns I crawled. Through forests and prairies I trekked.

Never do the shamblers cease to amaze with their ability to creep, and to keep a watchful eye on all travelers.

The horrors that befall this world some times take me by surprise. Still. Death always closing in. It peers up at me whenever I have time to pause. In between bandits that have murdered friends, have stalked me relentlessly, taken pleasure in destroying what few lives remain. Shamblers with their shrieks and moans, the mobs that appear, the lunges that seem at random. The terrified survivors that shoot first, lest they have to relearn how to interact with other people in this world abruptly devoid of casual meetings. Or shit, even the formal. After I've been bandaged, received transfusions. After the chance encounters with new friends. With idiots who nearly get themselves killed, but desire not to bring harm to me. With reflection always comes the world that is left to us. One full of death. By many hands.

I've only killed two people during these journeys. I remember each well. A bandit who had called down a horde upon himself when trying to end the life of his fellow man. Of G.Newell, who had murdered BS right before my eyes. My steady rifle brought vengeance. Countless others I've attempted to extend trust. Calling out, saluting. Dispatching shamblers together. Betrayals, of course. Some faith remaining. Countless shootouts and avoiding those that I could have easily killed, but knowing that others would encourage me to end their lives, drained me. For a long while I remained solitary. Enjoying the land. Hunting and pulling water from lakes. Staying away from even deer stands. Occasionally vengeance would rear its ugly head and I'd loot tents from those who brought death. Back, always, to the camp that is my own. Supplies there free to wandering survivors. All there I need. Matches, a hatchet, hunting knife, crossbow.

ibx56zrgSY4DFt.bmp

But to ignore when fellow gaffers need supplies. That I cannot do. I venture to meet Abby. To offer food, transfusion kits. For his own adventuring, albeit wheeled.

ibyItGgc87JcoT.bmp

Abby supplied, I head back to the forest. Awaking to shamblers is disquieting. Awakening to find bullets striking nearby is terror. Trees rarely betray my position. Far less death, protected by their limbs. Through one forest. A clearing. Through another forest I run. A day spent living. Never trampling upon the lives of others, save for that jerk with the tents. And even then it was symbolic, a magazine and food my only keepsakes. A clearing. All plans fall away. Rest forsook. I shout for Abby to join me.

This game is still amazing, but it really cooled off for me. I don't know if it's the HUGE gaf groups or the fact that I have to play for 5 hours straight to get somewhere and die in 20 seconds because somebody decided to shoot me.

I'll say that, the one time that I decided to actually kill somebody for sport, I had much more fun doing that for 30 seconds than I did playing the game to get to that scenario. And then I died because I didn't expect there would be two people.

Much funnier and much better risk/reward possibility than avoiding people to die instantly by somebody I didn't see.

After this crazy E3 coverage, I might peek back in and do some banditry.

I've just been reading and watching videos of the game, but concerning the chat thing. Why not make it so that you can loot some walkie talkies or whatever and speak/chat through those? Good ones should have a few K's of reach I would assume.

Its because how DayZ is implemented into Arma 2. He cant avoid global chat right now, because he's basically exploiting games ability to store character data.

Except he said he would be turning off global once the Arma2 patch that fixes direct goes live.

He could probably implement ACRE, but his time is better spent working on core features.

Hey Nix, since we have complete access to TX8, would it be a good idea to add support to the better movement mod from ArmA 2 (which name I forget) and the better sounding weapons, also from ArmA 2 (which name I also forget)?

I wonder if these mods would prevent people without them from joining the server...

No longer allowed to have mods. Not sure what changed, but they have a zero tolerance policy now.

Unfortunately we couldn't loot him because we heard someone else in there as well and didn't think it was worth the trouble since we are pretty well set up at the moment.
Oddly enough its stories like this that fascinate me and really make me want to try this game. The fact that two people would rather avoid another human player and abandon a reward in order to increase their chances of staying unharmed.

Guys, please feel free to put up your playing on youtube. I hunger for some more vicarious zombie apocalypsing.
Yes! Me too.

Is there any ETA on when the beta patch will go final and get pushed out to Steam? I'd like to finally join up with the GAF folks.

Today? Or recently? Recently would make sense since I tried out what the "Disable VON" setting did. Everyone said it didn't change anything. I switched it back today when I rebooted the server so it shouldn't be disabled.

Yeah it had to be disabled (as of like 2 hours ago) cause I was using directional comms and it wasn't working. (My mic works)
