DayZ - zombie apocalypse online FFA permadeath survival Arma II mod

Same here. This game sounds so good. I just haven't had the funds recently to build the computer that I want.

Soon...

I hear you. I actually just picked up Cold War Assault (Operation Flashpoint: Cold War Crisis) today and love the hell out of what little I played. Extremely late to the party on that one, but it feels like it has aged well. These games are the real deal and hard as nails.

I have been playing with two other friends for some time now and one just happend to break his leg... :(

We are about an hour footwalk from the coast. Anyone know any good location to get morphine? We are near Zelenogorsk. Do we have to try to get back to Cherno?

Or does anyone know how to get a vehicle? We could use it to drive him back to Cherno.

Thanks.

You know what you gotta do... put him out of his misery.

While in the GAF mumble server earlier today, there was apparently
a player who was claiming and did sound like he was 14. Apparently
his father is a fellow Gaffer as well. The problem is that some
conversations and/or comments made by us are not suitable
for kids. I'm 40 and have two boys (9 and 12) and do not allow them
to talk on Xbox Live, mumble, etc.

I understand the kid playing the game but draw the line if
he's actively taking part in a chat server populated by adults.
It's just not a good idea IMO.

I don't want to turn this thread into a parenting debate and
I'm not saying the dad is wrong but to seriously re-think whether
he wants his kid in a live chat with grown adults.

While it obviously would be hard to verify age on the GAF mumble,
I'd propose anyone " sounding" pretty young or being under 18 not
to use it or even be blocked.

I wasn't comfortable having a minor in the server. Apparently
others weren't as well.

What do the rest of you think?

Okay I went through the painful install of this mod finally. I don't think I found the right server for GAF though. I searched the number and found a match but it didn't have the location in the name and putting gaf in the filter didn't show a server.

Also, are you completely defenseless until you find a weapon?

I've walked 5 people through this in methods that aren't preached widely and are easier to get to work than some of the convoluted advice or sixupdaters. Hit me up if you want help. It's painless and I do everything myself.

Also, are you completely defenseless until you find a weapon?

Yes besides running. :)
You basically start with a flashlight and bandage. Make your way into
a building to find an ax or gun along with food and drink.

I strongly suggest you find a clan/group that you can run with as most
everyone shoots other players on sight.

Or you could eventually hook up with the GAF crew.

Edit: I'd also recommend looking up and printing a DayZ map
for your desktop for reference on locations.

Also, the sun setting and rising in game is accurate ie; if
it's setting you run that way to go West. Rising: East.

You'll also have a greater chance of meeting players by running
down the coastlines as those are spawn points. Those players
likely don't have weapons either so you *should* be ok.

Still a but perturbed that when asked not to take things out of a tent as they're being stored whiled getting supplies for the rest of the group, items are removed and people fail to own up to it.

At least the young kid, Michael, admitted to taking one of the items I was trying to get back even though he did it for the wrong reasons. Yeah, "don't get attached to your gear" and all that jazz, but it's a bit disheartning when the group takes from each other. I don't come across "good" stuff as often as others, but when I do I'd like to enjoy it for at least a day.

Can someone explain "Perma-death" a bit better...? Do you just have to start over or what?

When you die, you respawn in a pseudo-random location with a fresh character. You lose all items, stats, clothing that your character had. Respawning takes anywhere between 30 seconds and 15 minutes depending on server load. You don't lose the ability to play the game when you've died, if that's what you're asking. :P

Ive uninstalled and will wait for a final release.

Just to buggy for me allthough i understand that this is alpha.

It is a little known fact that this game is infact just an alpha mod for a great game called ArmA II. I would suggest that anyone else thinking about uninstalling actually enjoy the game they bought before they do it.

Damn, spawned in Novy Sobor; found a ton of untouched loot in the church and military buildings.

This game's almost playable when you get lucky as shit.

I really want to play this game but I'm put off by the complicated install and the need to play with a group. Are these valid concerns?

You don't need a group to play. It might actually be easier solo.

Right now my issue is with this graphical bug where I can't see crap near certain areas.

Complicated install: Nope, it's not really that hard at all. There's also a couple of apps you can use to make it even easier. You can think of it as installing 2 "separate" games(arma 2 and operation arrowhead), updating the latter, and using an app to install the mod for you. If you can follow directions, you have nothing to fear. If you can't, well...

Need to play with a group: Join the GAF group in mumble! Unless you live in a far away country like me, you'll be able to join the server and chat with all the gaffers that are playing the game.

This game can be pretty intense!

EDIT: WISE FROM YOUR GWAVE OLD POST!

For a couple of friends:

HOW I INSTALLED ARMA 2 FREE - OPERATION ARROWHEAD - DAYZ

1) Downloaded Arma 2 Free, installed it(Bohemia interactive/Arma2), ran it once, no issues.
2) Downloaded OA from Amazon, installed it(Bohemia interactive/OA), ran it once, no issues.
3) Downloaded Arma 2 OA 1.6 patch, installed it, ran it once, no issues.
4) Downloaded worrom.com app, installed, had to correct OA file path, clicked on "Force Update", finished downloading dayz by itself.
5) Created a shortcut for BohemiaInteractive/OA/arma2oa.exe, added " -mod=@dayz -nosplash"(no quotes) after the quotes in the target field of the shortcut properties.
6) Ran it once, got many errors, googled them, copied Addons folder from the Arma2Free folder into the OA folder.
7) ???
8) PROFIT!!!

HOW I UPDATED TO ARMA 2 BETA AND DAYZ 1.7

A) Downloaded the latest patch, installed it, no issues at all. It created a "Launch Arma2 OA Beta Patch" shortcut.
B) Run the worrom.com app again, this time clicking on "Check Update". It downloaded and installed 1.7 by itself.
C) Edited the OA Beta Patch shortcut, added " -mod=expansion;expansion\beta;expansion\beta\expansion;@DayZ -skipIntro "(no quotes) at the end before the already existing " -nosplash"(no quotes).
D) ???
E) PROFIT!!!

HOW I RECENTLY INSTALLED ARMA 2 FREE - OPERATION ARROWHEAD - BETA PATCH - DAYZ 1.7 FOR A FRIEND

Just did the following steps from above:
1, 2, 3, 4, 6, A, C, D, E

Also a footnote, sometimes it's better to update/install the penultimate update and wait a bit/ask for feedback before updating to the latest version. It's an alpha, remember that.

I really want to play this game but I'm put off by the complicated install and the need to play with a group. Are these valid concerns?

Follow these instructions. It's what I did and it's pretty easy, it really should be in the OP, but whatever. Also, get DayZ Commander for the server browser.

Hey I want to try this but the Arma II base game runs like crap for me. I'm locked at around 14-17 FPS. I've looked at a bunch of guides to tweak the graphics but nothing helped. I don't think it's my laptop because it runs a bunch of newer games just fine.

I played for about 3 hours today and listened to Stan Bush music exclusively throughout.
I felt unstoppable. I WAS unstoppable.

Then some dude came and shot me after 2 songs, fuck this game.

2 Man squad trying to survive, going North for the first time.

"What's that sound?"

fhup fhup fhup fhup

"Is that a... helicopter?"

...

"TO THE TREES!"

Some dude parked a bus in the middle of Cherno on the server I was on, all hell broke loose trying to steal it. People sniping anyone that went near the bus, fresh spawns trying to loot dead bodies, people trying to snipe the other snipers. Craziness.

Ran into another fresh spawn headed back to Cherno and we talked in direct chat and I found he died going for it as well. This game has a really interesting community.

Playing this game with friends on skype/mumble/vent might be one of the greatest gaming experiences ever.
Me and a buddy had been playing for our first few hours, and finally got a bit of gear, travelling from town to town.

At the outskirts of a little coastal village we saw another player for the first time. Not knowing what to do, my friend immediately switched from hatchet to his Lee-Enfield and opened fire, not hesitating for a second. We saw the guy run behind a house for cover, he was obviously a new player, although he did carry a firearm and used it to return fire.

Me and my friend, both with murder on our minds, started hauling ass to catch the guy when he stopped shooting. We were not looking to start allegiances here.

halfway during our mad dash to the village center me and my friend accidentally get split up, we don't know where the guy went. I switched to prone and crawled around the wood fence I saw the guy run towards. I caught a bullet from nowhere and was bleeding out slowly, I had no bandages on hand. I call out to my friend, I had no idea where he was at either.
But then, the distant sound of turbine engines, getting louder extremely fast. I look back, and see an unknown chopper passing overhead extremely fast, only for it to turn around and orient itself towards the village. We were spotted.

Not having ever seen a chopper before, let alone any vehicle in working state, I freeze, terrified that I might potentially lose everything I found, and that me and my friend bit off a bit more than we could chew with just our rifles and a small handful of ammunition.
I equip the Lee-Enfield, ready to shoot anything that moves while I hear the chopper landing literally in the village's center.
Heart pumping, bleeding, I try and look for a line of sight on the chopper, I hear gunfire a few streets ahead.

I catch a player running straight towards me, across the street, maybe 50 meters away. In a split reactionary second I squeeze the trigger when my sights align with his head. After a meter or two, I see his body flop to the ground. I got him.
In a cruel plot twist, I realize that I just split the head of my survival buddy who tried to come to my rescue with a bandage. Fuck.

I passed out and died, never to see my assailants or a chopper again. This game is crazy immersive when you really get into it.

hahaha

People go nuts playing this game.

Me and my survival friend joined a server yesterday and explored around. We went into the Fire Station in Cherno and there was this guy that was lying prone waiting for people to go up the stairs.

2 Dead Bodies on the floor should have been a clue that he was up to no good. I got shot in the arm and collapsed, my friend went nuts and started to throw smoke grenades at the guy. He caught him trying to come and claim my body and killed him.

We bumped into the guy again a few minutes later as he made a mad dash to try and reclaim his body (which we had looted and hid). He was followed by a load of Zs and started to do circles around us. So... we killed him again.

"NO SECOND CHANCES, FLORIAN!"

First of, i just want to point out that i agree that he or any other player of that age. Not specifically because of his age (its just a number, all people at any age are different), but because of how it afflicts the other players on mumble. Clearly the attitude changed for the worse and people were uncomfortable and/or cruel him. If Neogaf truly is an 18+ community like some people on mumble said it's not even a discussion really.

However, how these so called "mature adults" handled the situation was laughable and shocking. Insulting and harassing him until he leaves instead of just asking/telling/explaining/banning (depending on his action) is just puzzling to me.

Ultimately the father, then "mature adults" and last Michael is to blame. He did nothing worse than anyone else have already done. I dare say Michaels so called "childish actions" are mature compared to stuntmans voice clips, aj's teamkilling and mrwizard base revealing on the stream.

Well, the kid not being in mumble means the kid being killed on sight. Maybe that's why his father suggested him to join the mumble.

I agree that some of our conversations would have not been acceptable if there was a 14y/o kid (depends on the kind of kid). I dont oppose myself the idea of the minor being in mumble, as long as his father doesnt mind him hearing the f- word constantly, and/or sexual innuendo jokes.

But yeah, whoever his father is. This is not the kind of game your son should play... honestly. Not because of the killing and all that stuff... just because there's plenty of more suitable options to stir his imagination. He doesn't need to get into this rotten world of revenge over a taken vehicle.

can you shoot the pilot of a helicopter through the window? i had the opportunity earlier but didnt go for it due the game being kinda picky about what you can shoot through and hit detection.

Hey guys, in a wee bit of a pickle here. I'm stuck in the southernmost barracks of the airstrip with a broken leg, and I can't escape from the bathroom :( Can I please ask a massive favour?

If anyone can spare it, could someone either run some morphine over to me? I'll give you my remington w/ flashlight in return. Or you could just kill me and take all my crap. Don't really want to be stuck in a toilet until I starve to death.

Also, could someone PM me the gaf server. The one in the op is not current, I don't think. Cheers.

I'm not going to point fingers about how the situation was handled
when he was playing.

Many felt an under-age/minor shouldn't have been on the GAF mumble
with adults and I agree.

Unable to separate reality from game here, which is pretty amusing. I hope you're saved, for you sake and your parents. No one deserves to die sitting on the toilet.

Knowing a minor is present and still having graphic sexual
conversations/profane language is NEVER a good mix and could even possibly
open up a can of worms IMO. That's an example though and this
wasn't how the situation went down FYI.

I guess that's my parent side talking. :)

That was my parent side talking too. Meant to be something implying that michael should not join the mumble. And probably not even the game. A game like this when I was 14 y/o... I would not understand the whole scope of the game, and I would find the attitude of players so bad that i'd probably be an asshole too in the future in online games.

met a guy in some random server. Said he'd go to the nearest city to look for some morphine for me. Didn't want anything in return... *Weeps*

I really hate loud weapons. Next time I will look for a crossbow and do everything with that.

I have been killed by zombies countless of times because I was forced to fire a Makarov or winchester in a town. They should make the hatchet into a secondary weapon. At least then I would have the choice of stealth killing zombies instead of opening fire and getting my ass swarmed.

Or just be smarter and don't get yourself stuck in a place with one way out.;)

Man, so many bloodthirsty people posting in here, killing new players on sight! I think I am glad that I'm not playing on the GAF server.

Met quite a few friendly people in that same random server, ran into another helpful friendly guy and the guy I mentioned earlier also came back with a morphine for me.

ok, hands up - I'm Michaels (bad) dad!

FTR he is nearly 15 and usually plays DayZ with his mates, I don't see a massive problem with this, personally he could be out taking drugs, hanging around on streets or mugging people so I see this as a lesser evil...my son is a good kid with a good heart.

A few nights ago he was helping me play (as I've only played a couple of times) when I bumped into another gafer who needed a blood transfusion. After this we were just chillin on a hill waiting for a bus and my son asked if he could join in and the guys were fine with that.

Eventually that evening (while still waiting for the bus) I had to log off however it seemed like Michael was having fun with the guys and was being taken to a camp to be kitted out...they seemed fine and (in fact) seemed to be enjoying the game with Michael with no problems and he eventually got fully kitted out.

So then the problems start.

I had no intentions that this carry on beyond that - as far as I'm concerned he's got some cool kit and 'hung out with the big boys' for a night and should return to his 'pack'. I'm (obviously) upset that (whoever did it) felt the need to bully him over the stolen bus, he asked who was driving the bus but as no-one answered he couldn't be sure - he wanted replies of "not any of us - kill whoever it is!" - but there you go, if it makes you feel better he shouldn't be playing with big boys (which is what I told him).

He then goes back for more - it seems all is fine and everyone is getting along and then after helping set up the camp everyone turned on him and killed him - then when he tried to return was sniped...I don't understand why he wasn't just asked to leave...but there you go.

So anyway, he's now banned for a while - obviously I don't want him on chats where there will be adult talk - I guess I was wrong to think that people might tone it down a bit - obviously use of the f word is commonplace in todays society - certainly his mates are probably using worse - however he is not allowed to use that language (or rather I don't want to hear it).

So he's back in his box and won't be 'upsetting' anyone else.

Just had my first encounter with a player. Working my way up north and approaching Vybor for the supermarket after hitting all of them prior from kamenka. Anyway, I'm lying in the grass 50m off the road and alt tab out to check a map. I alt-tab back in decide to crouch up to get my bearings and did it at the worst time possible. I saw a truck driving along the road infront and hit the dirt but he stopped and the driver got out. After some firing I end up dead. I kinda wonder if there were more people as the shots sounded different and it was a truck that could hold a few people in the back, but oh well.

Edit: Taking another look at the map, it seems like the dude in the truck was probably heading to the airfield. I probably shouldn't have pushed that far north unitil I had some better gear.

One of the younger "big boys" (still living with his parents, 17 years old or w/e) felt the need assert his big-boy-status among his fellow gaffers and thought being a dick towards the only person younger than him was a cool way to do it. Of course some us thought it wasn't, but he has his fans for sure so I'm not surprised Michael got killed later on.

Myself I wished he would leave on his own before socially disabled people have to take actions to enforce it, but such is the life on the inter-webs I guess...

I quit the mumble group a couple of days ago and don't intend to go back partly due to reasons and personalities similar to what I described above. I do miss the half-a-dozen or so good guys, but some of them don't play much (or at all) anymore anyways so it's not like I'm losing much. It's also a good time to take a break from this game since I think after 900+ hours I've done enough "testing" to last for a while :-)

Had probably the best day yesterday. Found 3 downed choppers surrounding the NW airfield, found an AS50, NVG, GPS, British Assault rifle (cant remember the name) but it has thermal sights, a guile suit and ammo for both guns.

Im never going towards civilization again :P
