DayZ - zombie apocalypse online FFA permadeath survival Arma II mod

That hasn't been a problem for weeks.
Still a problem for me. I was just on yesterday and it took a long time to get in. The first server glitches up to hell and we couldn't see anything thanks to crazy polygons. After that we couldn't find a single working server and gave up.

I'm curious, enlighten me.

Well, since you're a fan of stories:

ZenVolta and I were heading from the new coastal GAF base to an island that might have a chopper on it. Things took a turn into the the strange during this run. We suddenly see 10 or 11 people die on the lower right corner of the screen and realize a hacker is on the server. We keep running. Then we see two random zombies spawn near us and Zen thinks a Hacker is doing it. We swim across a bit of ocean to chopper island and as we get close I get shot in the chest by an invisible person on the island shore. I'm barely alive. Zen stays in the water and watches as the invisible Hacker pulls my bleeding body to the shore. I lay there helpless while Zen pleads with the hacker to not kill me and seduces him with his irresistible wit. Next thing I know the hacker is healing me and telling us there is no chopper on the island. He says we're dead if we fire one shot at him. We obey the rule and he tells us to follow him. We're nervous but decide to see what he has in store.

We walk for awhile and he says that he's tired of walking, so he makes a car appear. I tell him that I am impressed by his god-like abilities. He is amused at my lame conversation and takes us on a trip. We drive for a bit and then teleport to some random area on the map. I'm still thinking he's going to kill us both. Then he tell us to get out and makes a chopper appear. We fly around the map while the hacker tells us he is going to build a base. He starts doing backflips and barrelrolls in the chopper. Then we land somewhere outside of the map and he tells us he needs to restart Arma to get his mic to work and he'll "brb". He says he's sorry. I wonder why. Zen gets shot in the head. Oh... now I know why he said that. I get shot in the head too but this hacker wasn't the one shooting us. A different hacker came running up the hill and tried killing all three of us. I lay bleeding and watch a hacker vs hacker fight break out. I die.

We spawn back in and run around for a bit. The hackers are all gone. Zen, TommyT and I decide to meet up and loot the Balota airstrip. We talk about the hacker, wonder if we'll ever see him again. We're searching near a building when we suddenly hear a car honk behind us... we turn to see the hacker is back in a shiny black car. He tells us to get in and we are off on another strange trip. He teleports us to an area outside the map. We all get out and he loads us up with a ton of gear. Then we all can't move. Everyone in the mumble, on the server, say that they can't move too. The hacker tells us that he has locked everyone in place so hackers can't attack us. He allows Zen, TommyT and I to move again but everyone else on the server can't move. MOB starts to get pissed about this. Shit get's glitchy and the server freaks and dies. We're not sure if it was this hacker's fault or if the other hackers were trying to stop him and ruined the server in the process.

The GAF server has been missing ever since.

Where to start?

I want to apologise for the thread going OT (I assume a mod clean will be coming) but obviously I felt the need to respond to the comments and what had happened.

Again, Michael is almost 15 and (TBH) he's quite mature in many respects tho of course he is a kid. I left him with some guys who seemed 'well adjusted' and were basically giving him a load of top kit...who didn't want to hang out with a bunch of 'cool dudes' when they were a kid?

He shouldn't have played with you guys beyond that night - I did express my wishes but there you go, he's learnt a lesson from burnt fingers.

However, whichever way you spin it - "cyber-bullying" (or whatever you want to call it) is not cool and is indeed a punishable offence (as seen in the news recently) whereas letting a kid watch cert 18 DVDs isn't - go figure...people should think a bit more before embarking on that sort of behaviour.

I think the internet has a lot to answer for WRT the way people act towards others (due to the faceless nature of it) - but I did tell him to stop playing with you guys and other than watching his every move I just can't police it to that level...but I'm now sure he'll stick to his own...unless I'm online and need some help!

How... how in the world did I miss out on this? Of course, knowing half of the people involved (mainly the ones on the shit end of the blame pole), I can't really see this as being as serious as the ones on the other end are taking it.

Anyway, how about them new features, rocket?

and fucking Hackers are making DayZ unplayable. :(

I guess I got lucky - I logged in around 12:30pm UK time yesterday and there were fires near the new base...I managed to get a bit of kit (thanks) and logged out due to all the weird stuff going on...like I say, I guess I got lucky - there wasn't much kit TBH, think I picked up a sniper rifle but that's about it from memory.

Have you guys thought about making the server non-hive? Stops all the server hopping shenanigans and gives the admin better abilities to fight hackers (can roll back the DB for example).

You speak the truth. Its getting the point that doing anything is a fruitless endeavor. We cant ban them. Battleye doesnt stop them. Now I just go along with it. Iv got the guys name who was doing some of the hacking. But that was just one. Im more than positive there were atleast 2 maybe 3 other hackers on the server at the time.

Security in this game is a joke. Totally get that it was a fairly niche shooter and probably didn't have that many problems before, but when clients can modify other clients the way these script kiddies have, I have to wonder if there are any restrictions or sanity checks.

I don't blame rocket though because he's going to be very limited by what he can code in. Plus the fact that hackers can change someone else's equipment means you can't even check for hacked stuff on the DB and ban that way. And even if you clear it out through sanity checks, they can just spawn new ones anyway.

What does make the problem worse is that it's very hard to catch anyone in the act with enough evidence. Due to the lack of names on most servers I have no idea what the hacker is calling themselves, so you can't even ask the owner to investigate player X in the logs. In fact, because of the lack of server history I have no way of remembering which server it was even on in the first place.

You can actually see quite clearly in the logs when hackers spawn stuff.
I don't know how much access you get to that stuff if you just rent a server though.

It doesn't matter if it's lit up like a Christmas tree in the logs, it still requires someone going through them, and most admins who are prepared to do that are only going to do it on request.

But if I can't remember which server it was on (was I last playing on a DE server? Was there a 2 in there somewhere? Oh wait that was yesterday's server), I can't report it. Because I can't identify who it was, I can't even warn players that there was a hacker calling himself X, even if they can change that name at will. Because the game doesn't tell you who killed who, even actually dying doesn't help, and players can't easily keep an eye out for suspicious activity.

All in all, it makes it much easier for them to get away with.

Who is it? Why the big secret? Is it someone we wouldn't expect?
There is no GAFfer I wouldn't expect when it comes to this.

new arma2 beta is up, btw. moves voicechat to same ports as the game commo to help with nat issues, according to the changelog.

The GAF server has been missing ever since.

I'll continue from the last bit:

So we server hop to find another sever, each one of us choosing different ones. We all end up where we expect, outisde the map, and being to run. Turns out JROCK and I lose everything in our packs, all the AS50 rounds, and have nothing in the way of food/water. We plan to head to an old GAF base. Decide we can't make it as water/food begin to turn read. It's agreed to check out Petrovka in hopes of finding something and killing zombies for food stuffs.

We log into the same server an spookily enough, EXACTLY the same spot which causes a mini freak out. In town, we try to shoot zombies with our M1911's... not good, they mob us. So we try the slow/sneaky hatchet and it works. We both get drink. However we end up passing out several times, bleeding a lot, breaking legs, etc. JROCK logs with drink, can of food, and 350 blood and bleeding. I run off into the woods to kill a rabbit for food as I'm down to 4k blood. I amass 3 sodas, finally get a piece of food, and manage to scrounge a bandage for JROCK. We wait for Zen to reach us with blood from his 'lucky' spawn in the NW Airfield. He does, patches me up JROCK logs in and I bandage while he loads in leaving him at 200 blood. He's transfused, we hunt for some last minute food/drink and are on our merry way.

I've owned ARMA II for a while, but finally got all of combined ops a few weeks ago during the Steam sale, and have been playing DayZ since. Been having a blast. I didn't even realize there was a GAF server.

I'm on vacation right now, but I get back Saturday, and I think I'd like to start playing with some fellow GAFfers. Read a few of the most recent pages, and seems like there's a lot of drama and relationships already formed between some members in the server and mumble. Hopefully I'm not too late to the party, and can join in with everyone.

Only thing is, I'm still not very good at the game. I'm starting to get better at recognizing cities and things like that, but my average life span is still probably only around an hour or so, usually getting killed off my bandit snipers or something. I also have only rolled solo in the game, never really in a group.

Is me being LTTP and my lack of real DayZ skill gonna be a problem with you guys?

Crazy survival stories. This is why I love dayZ.

For the giant polygun bug going on right now try this tip from gamefoo:
Got those giant shards and artifacts making the game unplayable? Fix is here:
Go to Documents/ArmA 2/playername.ArmaA2OAProfile
Open file in Notepad
Search for “sceneComplexity=;”
Change to “sceneComplexity=100000;”
Save changes and exit.
Launch DayZ with preferred method.
Also you can make this tweak by setting “Object Detail” to “Very Low” (thx again to Szalent)
This worked for me.

Not played in a couple of weeks after losing some awesome gear to a really dumb decision.

Man, it's still as thrilling as ever. Sneaking in and out of Elektro just now made me so nervous. Still GotY.

New beta patch is out. Not sure if its worth installing but I did just for the sake of not having to do so later.

Judging from these comments, i stay away from the patch for now.

I think the hackers are all Russian, and are purposely targeting US servers because lag does not Mather in this game (and even less when you are hacking). Is that a fair assumption?

Password protected servers are severed from the Hive.

So they say, but they're quite lax about enforcing this stuff.

One server in the EU region runs a script that kicks almost everyone off the server aside from the admin and their friends, and which has been reported multiple times for this with evidence. It's almost always empty even at peak times.

A month later and it still isn't banned.

The hacker that we dealt with last night just sounded like an older (40s) American guy.

I have completely fallen out of the DayZ loop.

What are the best videos to come out in the last few months (other than the Days Ahead ones).

There goes that theory...

Honestly i know its a alpha, but these hackers are just ruining the whole experience for me. I fail to see how the game can be so open that client can spawn server sided stuff. I mean CS is probably the most hacked game of all time, but NEVER has there been hacks that can control server sided things. How hard can it be to limit what the client can do without a password? In any case removing the craziest hacks wold be a start. I would actually enjoy just dealing with wallhack/aimbot/teleport/speedhacks instead of instant kill, godmode and b52 bombers.

Look at HoN... completly removed the whole maphack problem with simply limiting what information the client gets. Wonder of something like that could work for dayz.

Bleh

The group I play with finally found a heli, took 3 of us about 2 and a half hours to get it up and running. Luckily we found the PBX which made getting to the island 100 times easier.

Flying that thing is so much fun, especially when you start banking like crazy when you see SAW tracers flying at you from the ground.
