Hype, Hype, Hype!

So you're saying Mid-December, right? Cause if you're saying it might come out sooner than that, maybe before Thanksgiving, I'd say you're crazy. Unless you had a source. A real source though. One that isn't "A friend of a friend" or something like that, y'know?

HAHA! Oh DayZ thread, you're so funny!

For non-redditors, mildly amusing shit went down today. PC Gamer did a piece based on Rocket's monster reddit posting session the other day. In the process, they drew every incorrect conclusion possible and gave it the sensational title DayZ Standalone version delayed due to bugs and poor optimization.

The ensuing storm resulted in a personal, public apology on reddit from PC Gamer editor Logan Decker, and the retraction of the year:

NOPE. NOPE. NOPE. We really blew this one. I've taken the article with the above headline down simply because it appears to have been so far off the mark that updating it would be not only an inadequate remedy but may have the potential to continue to misinform.

As the editor, the publishing of this story is my fault and my fault alone. I apologize to our readers as well as to Dean Hall, who I've reached out to for comment. (If he declined, I'd certainly understand.)

Once we have heard from Mr. Hall, or later this afternoon regardless, I'll update the story. Again, my apologies. - Logan Decker

oops. If you're going to mine reddit for scoops, Perry Vandell, be sure to read the whole conversation.

In all fairness when a Developer of a game says that his goal is for his game to "run at a minimum of 15fps..." its really hard not to take that at face value. On the other hand I think this article was written AFTER everything was said and done. A quick check of rockets posts on Reddit explains the confusion. But good on PCgamer for pulling the article asap.

Edit: lol @ the link "dayz-standalone-version-delayed-due-to-bugs-and-poor-optimization". I wonder why they didnt change that haha

Well if he wants a soft launch right when all these consoles come out seems like a good time...

PCGamer is the best possible example of just how bad gaming journalism has gotten.

Complete embarrassment.

He gas been saying for months that he would prefer the launch to be as small as possible.

I hope they won't have a high starting price because of the very same reason, I want to be in from d1 and I'm moneyless right now :(

$20-$25 seemed to be the starting price he had in mind, though they hadn't fully discussed it at that point.

The base price won't increase for quite a while, and he said he would announce in advance when they would increase the price.

Hope you guys like M4's and Mosin Nagants! Because that's what you will have day one. In addition expect about 8 or so melee weapons and a pistol as well. Also there will be walkie talkies.

Edit: On an unrelated note today was the most guessed day in the DayZ giveaway contest.

Loving the atmosphere in the recent screen shots. Melee sounds good too. Also saw rocket say this on reddit...

zombie damage currently results in damage to items where they hit you, the same as normal player melee.

So if you do happen to ecape a crazy horde of zombies you may still end up ruining all your gear. Damn things are actually going to be a real threat for once.

That looks so good.

Edit: Just looked up that dude demongroover from the sidechat.

He made a remark on a psyindicate video a few weeks back:

There is always a calm before the storm. There is still no official release date - i reckon one day you will wake up and DayZ will just be there on Steam. No fuss.

I just want a tiny shack way out in the mountains where I can hold up and make my excursions into the world to creep on fools and find some beans. Maybe find a old lady of mountains and do a little bump and grind and have some little old kids of the mountains.

I wonder if NVG's will be in SA day one or at all? I wanna creep on some fresh spawns in the dark.

There was this one time I was playing lingor, and I happened across three dudes near a hospital. I creeped up on them and starting playing music over direct. They started to drop flares to find me, and after a while tried to run from me. So I chased them to this house where they were trying to hold up and shoot me. I stuck my head in front of a window and one the guys fired an enfield at me. Big Mistake. Suddenly they found dozens of zombies storming the building and soon they were overwhelmed. I went inside the house to take their gear, unfortunately one of them survived and shot me square in the chest killing me. However in doing so he alerted more zombies which promptly killed him, as i lay on the floor bleeding out playing twinkle twinkle little star.

I remember Rocket talking about items like NVGs being so rare that only a small quantity would exist at any one time across the entire hive. You wouldn't want to be seen wearing them!

I miss playing in the dark like the old days. So many servers are day time only.

Like you said, being able to creep up on somebody in NVG's, so close you can touch them is one hell of a rush.

And then scream your head off in voice chat making them shit their pants.

They have batteries in game, they will probably be implementing them for the same reasons they are there for other items.

If you get shot in the head while wearing the NVGs they will be destroyed. Likewise, if your are shot in the pocket that carries them.

Quick question - are NVGs supposed to utilize batteries in the game, a la real life? Or do they just work forever?

No idea how they will work, but I hope they are forced to utilize batteries. And non-rechargeable ones, at that.

Unless they are not in the game at all. I would be completely fine with that.

Often it's less of an equalizer and more of a handicap. It just makes the game downright unplayable at times.

I disagree. Pop a flare, crack a chemlight, or turn on your flashlight to get some light, or rely on those light sources provided by other people.

The most compelling gameplay comes at night.

So the DayZ Group Chat on Steam went live today and Rocket and Hicks payed a visit. Someone put the conversation into a pastebin.

Link

I'll go through it a see if I can pick out some tidbits of info.

Edit: Actually it didn't go live today it was discovered like Columbus discovered america

Ok sorry for the ugly hack job that Im about to do.

In responce to an ongoing :"onPlayerconnecting" bug

rocket2guns (4): the optimizations got reverted and are in their own branch being fixed now. will be merged back once done

rocket2guns (4): again, I'd just be happy with it not crashing and good server FPS

Looks like there is a possibility stamina/weight system down the line
rocket2guns (4): we plan to redo the existing stamina system at some point, same time as we look at weight

Ragdoll in currently in development but no release schedule for it yet
rocket2guns (4): ragdoll is in active development, but no idea when it comes through into alpha

In response to a question about larger scale (50+) player testing

rocket2guns (4): once we get the optimization merged back in

rocket2guns (4): we'll test with more players

A question about Dean's favorite new spot on the map

rocket2guns (4): I probably like the swamps best on cherno
rocket2guns (4): the new swamps are awesome

Question
rocket i have a little question regarding the map editor. does the standalone require a new approach or are you guys using the editor for arma 2? just in case someone wants to go ahead and build a new map for SA

Anwser
rocket2guns (4): no map editor for a start in SA

Q
DonnyTrump: need online leaderboards - perhaps an api

A
rocket2guns (4): yeah was just thinking about an API

Dean was working on Player Creation last night.

rocket2guns (4): trying to get character creation working properly

rocket2guns (4): review past characters, set a default one, that sort of thing

rocket2guns (4): one character at a time, but you can see past ones

Default answer on release date

rocket2guns (4): once performance is acceptable we'll release the alpha

This is most of the stuff rocket said. Hicks was on as well, I'll work on it a bit but I probably wont do it all.

I'll do all of Hicks Stuff in this Post

Unarmed Melee. Go out there and fucking suplex a zombie, or maybe another player.

Hicks_206: Now, with unarmed melee - that is DEFINITELY the case.

Melee weapons will be common compared to guns.

Hicks_206: Well, think of how more common they would be in real life.

Servers at Launch
Hicks_206: There will be a large quantity of servers at launch. Hopefully, large enough ;)
For what it's worth the question also asked about WHO would be in charge of the servers. This doesn't appear to be answered.

Hicks hands out homework
Hicks_206: My advice to everyone here - while the game is downloading, read the manual. You'll want to know the controls so you can survive.

Context Unclear. (Assuming its about melee weapons. But it could also be about control changes, but that doesn't make as much sense.)
Hicks_206: A wide array, with many more to come in the future.
More Melee
Hicks_206: Melee is *definitely* a core pillar of the game now

On Character Customization

Hicks_206: As character creation is literally being finalized as we speak by Dean, I'd prefer not to comment, as it might change at any time.

Hicks_206: But the design is to allow a good array of customization to aid in a wide variety of survivor types,

On launch day issues
Hicks_206: Listen, when it comes to launch - I expect issues. I've been #2 on the escalation chart for online only projects for other, very influental companies before and even -they- couldn't stop the inevitable

The best you can do is prepare for the worst, and make sure you have a clear escalation chart, and a big red emergency phone to the data centers for when shit hits the fan.

Hicks_206: You can be certain, when the game launches - Dean will be staring at the feedback tracker with his eyes peeled back, and I'll be on a bridge call with the server host

A random plug
Hicks_206: I've been addicted to watching this guys DayZ videos: http://www.youtube.com/user/stephenmorrish

Poop/Chemical Warfare
Hicks_206: The way DayZ is designed allows to maximum flexibility, and experimentation. So, its been discussed.

Another response about server hosting.
Hicks_206: We're still addressing our approach to this, however at launch there will be large quanities of game servers.

On Client side Preformance
Hicks_206: Client side? I've found the game to be genuinely much smoother experience, and lower demand than the mod.

Oculus Rift Support
Hicks_206: Its definitely a goal. We have rifts in the office, and I know Dean is in love with the device

Some stuff on Zombie AI
Hicks_206: The easiest way for you to think of it Conductor, is that as of the time of that tweet, the zombie AI was not interacting with the geometry of the walls. Going straight for the player. (At that time)

On the "feel" of the game.
Hicks_206: DayZ makes DayZ Mod feel like the difference between watching a cartoon from the 80s, and then watching the live action series on bluray.

Hicks_206: Side by side, the difference is SO noticable

In response to frame rate issues I believe

Hicks_206: Our tentpole goal, is the player experience. Presenting the player with a stable, and enjoyable gameplay experience. Framerate is a big part of this. keven.
Hicks_206: And it will continue to be
Hicks_206: post launch

On Utes
Hicks_206: I can't speak to Utes. We need to discuss our goals with this internally.

Expect lots and lots of updates
Hicks_206: traf: That system is ongoing, and will continue to be a major focus from here until the 1.0. So, while I can't speak to what will be out on day 1 of the early access, know that *frequent* updates, and ongoing development is planned for years to come.

Context not really clear but some stuff on bases
Hicks_206: Hah, we'll see Roxyn. It'll be interesting to see where we take the discussion on bases, etc when we get there.

Dont punch zombies he says
Hicks_206: Punching zombies is possible, but not advised.

You will have full control over captured players gear
Hicks_206: A tester was AFK outside Vybor, I found him, handcuffed him -and then proceeded to dress him.

ENTER almost ALL THE BUILDINGS
Hicks_206: Mostly because about 95 to 98% of the structures are enterable now.

Guess they have been working hard. (So have I, hurry the fuck up and leave Hicks! I wanna take my bath and go to bed)
Hicks_206: Nah, not drugs. Just regular office hours of 13 to 15 hours a day, 5 days a week, sometimes weekends as well.

On Satchel Charges
Hicks_206: Time will tell.

Yes I made it to the end!
Hicks_206: Alright, its bed for me. Going to watch the post mortem for Maniac Mansion on Youtube and drift off. Should I open chat back up?
Hicks_206 left chat.

Damn they are working hard guys.

Let me out it like this - I got told a rough date before but now they are getting hyped to release themselves. I think rocket wants it out as much as we do lol

Awesome job littleworm! Major props.

That must be why the Devs have been so chatty the past few days.
