DDR4 Memory released next month, 20% less voltage, 2x speed & 2x the density of DDR3

lol isn't there like a 1 year gap between the two?

performance wise.

DDR3 was/is cheap system memory while GDDR5 was/is expensive GPU memory.
Even DDR4 looks like to be inferior to GDDR5.

Also lets not forget than both DDR3 and GDDR5 memory is now different in performance compared to few years back.

Not to piss on anyone's parade, but the speed difference between DDR3 and DDR4 isn't very large. Hell, you're probably still fine for gaming on DDR2! This isn't worth changing motherboards over.

Probably not; this will likely be prohibitively expensive at first.

Bingo.

Anyone who just ordered a DDR3 rig is perfectly fine. If you want to wait for DDR4 prepare to pay the early adopter tax.

I am planning to get a new rig at the end of next year so maybe the prices will come down a bit and there will be more options. Else I have no problems going with DDR3 still.

And I JUST built my new rig. Ah well. The tech can mature for a few years. No way am I buying a new motherboard to take advantage of faster RAM. I got some fast DDR3 and 32 GB of it. I'm good.

Haha, I just bought my Rampage IV Formula a few months ago so I should have know that this would happen.

I wonder what other changes the new DDR4 motherboards will bring? A new chipset seems like a definite.

My main concern is about having future proof motherboard, rather than the RAM, to be honest.

Why is that? Does console hardware impact pc hardware in any way? or does prices for modern components get cheaper?

At the beginning, usually consoles are worth more than their PC counterparts at the same price point. Usually if you wait a year to get a GPU you will be ahead of consoles and this time with 20nm the diference might be bigger than before. If you are someone like me that has already invested in a rig and the only thing to upgrade would be the GPU then that changes your perspective on what is a better deal. I could buy a R9 290 for $400 or buy a PS4 and PS+ for $450 or I could even wait for 20nm, expected to release in 2014, and have an even greater power advantage over a PS4.

Flame on

After 9 living in the Netherlands for nine years I've become sick and tired of apostrophe rape and can't take it any more.

PC's : Belonging to the PC
PCs : More than one PC

Flame off.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Apostrophe

  • The marking of the omission of one or more letters (as in the contraction of do not to don’t).
  • The marking of possessive case (as in the cat’s whiskers, or in one month's time).
  • The marking by some as plural of written items that are not words established in English orthography (as in P's and Q's). (This is considered incorrect by others; see Use in forming certain plurals. The use of the apostrophe to form plurals of proper words, as in apple’s, banana’s, etc., is universally considered incorrect.)

On-topic, woohoo DDR4 finally! Do smartphones right now use DDR3 ram or some special customized version of ram? I'm wondering if the improvements will be most pronounced on smartphones and tablets compared to laptops and PCs.

I was going to buy all my PC parts on black friday, so if I'm not in a rush should I wait and get this? Is it going to mean anything for gaming?

Very misleading. They're talking about launch speeds of ddr3 (1066) in 2007 vs launch speeds of ddr4 (2133)

It's not twice as fast as the fastest ddr3 out there. Gddr5 was the way to go

You're right but I don't think its misleading to use this metric for highlighting the difference in DDR4. Over time it should scale similarly to DDR3 and DDR2 before it, in which case after 2 years we'll see better increases not possible with DDR3.

If some one more knowledgeable than me can do a comparison of base and late stage ddr2 vs ddr3, we may have a better idea of this representation

Edit: regarding ps4 and xbone - its the right decision for consoles right now, DDR4 will not be capable enough or cost effective for some time. Hopefully we don't see anymore of the collusion for memory price hikes as we have before

you know i was actually thinking about DDR4 back in march when specs were starting to leak. its unfortunate for ms and even if they did decide on DDR4 prices for that particular memory would probably be more than GDDR5 for several years.

Damn having to buy a new motherboard. That also means I would have to buy a new CPU and CPU Fan.

I'll just stick with my 2133Mhz DDR3 for now

Did XONE and PS4 just miss the boat on this? Would an early 2014 release incorporating this tech have been better for this console cycle?

The idea that either MS or Sony would go with a pricier option just because its new is ridiculous. The price was probably the biggest reason MS went with DDR3 and why Sony felt they were getting a great deal on GDDR5 despite it costing more.

We saw in a lot of benchmarks that ramspeeds make for very little fps difference, hardly any outliers.

So for normal gaming, DDR4 should do very little.

And nobody in PC space will support it for a while. Who knows when we will get first DDR4 memory controllers outside of servers and enterprise hardware.

Haswell-E should be the first DDR4-compatible CPU in the "consumer" space. Admittedly the very, very top end of the consumer space, but still there. That should be approximately this time next year. The only way you'll get it sooner is if AMD pull something amazing out of their hat (and given they've just finished their APU roadmap conference, they won't) and force the issue, because DDR4's biggest performance boost will be in the iGPU space.

I'm a RAM Noob, but can I just replace my current DDR3 8GB ram or does it need a new motherboard

New everything. RAM's integral to the system and DDR4 introduces a markedly different architecture. New CPU + mobo at a minimum, and at that point you may as well replace everything else too. I wouldn't get too hung up on it, to be honest, unless you're using an iGPU or doing HPC, DDR4 isnt going to be a massive thing, that's why it hasn't been seen in the wild yet, even though it's been working since at least january of this year.

It's not going to have any effect whatsoever except for BF4/FB3, which gets huge gains from faster memory, for some reason.

http://www.corsair.com/en/blog/bf4-loves-high-speed-memory

I keep hearing about it, but only seeing Corsairs benchmarks to back it up. Has anyone done any comprehensive testing to see if their gains are to be believed? Seems like something that would be picked up on by the masses if the gains were really that large.

Also, how would moving from DDR3 1600 to DDR3 2400 fare on a Sandy Bridge system? I am thinking it would be a complete waste, but I want to be sure.

It depends on the use case and the rest of the system but it's fairly safe to say it's going to be a complete waste.

Anandtech release "memory scaling" articles for most architectures. Their SNB article indicates effectively zero benefit from going beyond DDR3-1600.
