Dead Island Riptide's CE is just gross. NSFW. [Might be pulled. Read OP.]

It's the boobs people are upset with not the gore. If this was a zombie, the outrage would be negligible.

not really. with the timing of all this "discussion" about violence in games, does this seem like a great idea? people would be outraged anyway, but probably for different reasons.

Am i the only one who sees this as a marketing stunt? I mean, this is probably gonna hit the news everywhere, so they just get free press by making a couple of these things.

Someone who displays a decapitated body in their room because they think it is cool or bad-ass is less creepy than someone who fantasizes about sleeping with underage cartoon characters.

That's like some kind of crazy ad hominem against a party that isn't even partaking in this discussion.

As has been said before, if nothing else at least people know the game is out soon, now.

I find 99 % of all Collector's Edition stuff to be pointless crap, this just takes it to a whole new level.

What was Deep Silver even thinking? Too bad, since the steelbook looks cool. I wonder if there's a "Limited Edition" with just the game and the steelbook.

I had that poster of RE4 in my room that showed Leon being decapitated. I agree with this post ;)

Who cares what you like to display in your room or house or whatever. People buy Freddy Krueger, Alien Queen and Joker models too. Is that considered creepy as well?

Yeah. They are pretty awesome. There are some better ones even.

If people are seriously offended by this I have officially lost faith in humanity. This thing is peanuts.

I got ripped to shreds by a few posters in another thread for using the word "honey." I imagine those guys started vomiting uncontrollably when they saw this topic.

People will be offended by this, but I guess that's the point.

Worse than resident evil 6's London butcher with severed penises and tongues and human carcasses?

I love following these threads at the start because it barely takes a page before its overwhelmed with "yeah why is this bad exactly?" but I wouldn't have expected it from a thread about a mutilated torso with perfect intact round breasts and crotch region.

Parodies aren't exempt from the context of an industry full of rampant female objectification and the rules of Basic Human Decency, especially when you remove the bit that "talks back".

it seems they aren't exempt from having specific agendas projected onto them either

THAT'S what grosses you out? I find the gore to be pretty bad.
Sexualisation of female death, gore and suffering is generally considered more gross and negative than simple gore, yes.

Think I'm more WTF'd at the first page reactions. Its a zombie in a bikini set up like a well known piece of art. Yelling objectification seems a bit of a stretch. And no, it isn't 1:1. This is a promo item for a video game about zombies, some of which will be, surprise-surprise, wearing bikinis.
Come on. You're just being willfully ignorant there.

I'd say it's creepy as hell, but it's not maladaptive in any way and therefore perfectly acceptable.

What is truly disturbing is the fact that there will be people more offended from the breasts than the actual decapitation and gore. Comparing big breasted anime models to a gory torso? Um...I don't know about that.

Wait this is a sequel? I did like Dead island.

You're joking right? I mean you have a Bayonetta avatar. That character was designed specifically to be sexy.

bayonetta's age > 18

no, it really isn't.

yes, it really is.

People calling it a Venus de Milo parody are giving these developers WAYYY too much credit

that's exactly what it is, it even states as much in the press release

as others have said, that doesn't stop it from being a tacky piece of shit

Someone who displays a decapitated body in their room because they think it is cool or bad-ass is less creepy than someone who fantasizes about sleeping with underage cartoon characters.

You're still adding your own opinion of one of these things to your comparison of two objects. Do you automatically assume that someone who displays the torso in their room wants to fuck every bloody corpse they see?

The way people party on the beach in this day and age, this doesn't surprise me it is a bikini.

Must remember to get dressed when I am sunbathing on a beach and some zombies begin to attack and eat people around me! >.<

It's a parody of Venus de Milo.

Isn't that like a Greek statue or something?

EDIT: Ah, Googled this and yeah, that's what I was thinking of. Although the likeness might be a coincidence.

No its not, and if it is is the worse parody I have ever seen, not because of being a parody of venus of Milo itslef, that could have been pretty humorous if done right, but becuase it looks nothing like it.

I they really wanted to do a parody of a vacational chick zombie as the venus of milo, the easier way to do it would have been to make a smaller figure, not only a torso then, same pose without the arms, with the legs covered on a beach towel, with a full zombie head screaming or something, with the hair similar to the venus, and both legs chopped off.
What we have in the CE is certainly NOT the Venus of Milo.

Someone who displays a decapitated body in their room because they think it is cool or bad-ass is less creepy than someone who fantasizes about sleeping with underage cartoon characters.

But what if the cartoon character is really a 300 year old vampire?

Just because they have an anime figurine does not mean they want to have sex with it... that's what body pillows are for.

Same applies to this decapitated body thing.

That said I don't think you could pull off looking baddass with that particular statue thing, there's not enough gore.

Let's not attribute qualities to a work that do not objectively exist.
In art, nothing "objectively" exists. That said, to hold the opinion that this isn't a work sexualising female death is roughly in the same ballpark as denying Bambi's mother didn't die because it happened off-screen. It's obvious and leaves little room for alternate interpretation.

Not all anime characters are lolis.
Indeed, sometimes they're shotas.

I kid.

Alien Queen and Joker models too. Is that considered creepy as well?

Not even close to being the same thing. Those are famous movie characters, this thing is just a mutilated torso with big giant boobies to appeal to the male gamerz crowd and judging from this thread it worked.

Definitely not a parody of the Venus De Milo. A) The left arm isn't a broken off stub, which would be very basic visual parity with the Venus B) the contrapposto pose, or 'S' shape is completely absent from the figurine. Not only is the right shoulder not significantly lower than the left, as in the Venus, it is actually higher. None of the language of parody other than a female torso is present. It is a chest forward, breast displaying pose with over the top gore. It is "fitting" for the game content. I don't find it anymore offensive than underage looking hyper sexualized anime figurines with frozen in time upskirts. Saying it is a Venus Di Milo parody, that is offensive.

Edit: Both types of figurines are derogatory of women and "offensive" to the medium's attempts to mature into something other than a juvenile boy's club.

I'm not saying it's a good parody, but the location of the shear on the right arm makes it obvious what the intent was.

Of course it's not THE VoM, but it's a parody of it. They state it in the press release. If it's done well is another question.

Personally I don't think it's offensive or in bad taste. It's just ... there. I wouldn't want it displaying but I also couldn't imagine shelves of Anime DVD's and little teeny bopper big breasted school girl statues that people buy and people comment like "oh dude, where did you get the [generic_anime_boob_statue]? Been looking for one".

Taste is subjective. I personally find it hilarious the reactions in this thread. White Knight GAF indeed.

Boobs are used to sell games to horny 18-35 year old dudes, I'm appalled!!!

Exactly. Seems the OP is getting hung up on the wrong thing. The most disturbing part of this piece is that it's a mutilated human torso, that is meant to be proudly displayed on someone's desk, not that fact that females have boobs.

Look at the way the blood and gore falls. The boobs are completely unharmed. Therefore, they are meant to be the focal point, the centrepiece if you will.

I'm not arguing that the gore is less disturbing, but the thing that immediately jumped out to me was the fact that the even without the gore this thing would be just as gross and overly sexualised. They may call it a venus de milo parody, but that had a head and legs. This is just... boobs and gore. Thats the whole thing.

Simply intending to parody something else does not protect the resultant art from being criticised on its own grounds. This work reduces a woman to a bikini'd torso, her limbs and head having been ripped away in some vicious attack. The woman has suffered and died, yet still the portrayal is one of sex for the purposes of titillation.

It is like fan service panty shots on women receiving a physical beating in anime (as the discussion seems to have gone to that...). It is the definition of objectification.

Boobs are used to sell games to horny 18-35 year old dudes, I'm appalled!!!
I'd be appalled at the sexualisation of female suffering being used to sell a game to horny dudes, yes.

It would be a lot more palatable if it was just the bust without the gore. I'm not sure people are really understanding the issue here.

It being a parody of Venus de Milo seems like a last minute thought. I would not have thought of it without someone saying so. A parody doesn't work when you can't even easily identify what it's supposed to parody.

So its a bad parody then? I dont know what is worse then.
Tell me if it wouldnt have been better if it looked MORE like the venus of milo, just like I described in my last post.
Could have turn pretty humorous instead of people looking at a ripped bust with some tits.

I have been an art student, and the last thing I thought is that it was the parody of the Venus of Milo. Because it clearly looks anything like it.

'Cause it isn't? I mean, not even the same posture, let alone that left arm is completly different.

It looks nothing like the Venus.
Huh?
Look at the torso and look at the pic of the Venus on page one, they are the same. I don't know how you see the posture and arm as different when they are the exact same, minus gore and nudity.

For the record I'm not in anyway commenting on the subject of if this is or isn't in poor taste, I am however stating my observation and opinion that this is clearly a copy of the Venus.
