Dead Rising 2 vs Dead Rising 2: Off the Record

Which has a better online coop? I know nothing of the series, but online videos make it look like fun. Purpose is to play with a friend online so we can shoot the shit. Don't care about goal directed gameplay. Mostly want to drink and kill zombies while we chat.

The loading screen during transitions from area-to-area are much shorter in OTR. I'd say go for that. Plus it's mothafuckin' Frank West (with Chuck as the co-op dude). OTR also has that neat theme park, though it's laggy on co-op.

The sandbox mode is available for co-op in OTR, I'm pretty sure. That isn't available in the original, so there's no reason not to get OTR. But yeah, basically the same game, which is bananas.

For what its worth, I don't plan on playing the story mode by myself. Just want to maximize fun ways to kill zombies.

Off the Record has all of the same story content as the original?

I don't think you can play the Main Game as Chuck Whatshisface.

But the content and even the transition real time scenes are the same, except with Frank instead of Chuck. I think the other people dialog lines are even the same on those events.

However, OTR has extra content not available on regular DR2. Specially the free roaming mode, without any time limits.

OTR is more of an alternate universe version of DR2 with Frank instead of Chuck.

The games are still mostly the same though. Also Chuck doesn't get enough love, I like him a lot as a character.

I really wished they would have released a GOTY edition of DR2. Having DR2 and OTR, along with Case Zero and Case West would've been great.

I loved DR2 and barely am into OTR but am biased to any DR game.

DR2 is worth it more if you are a big DR story nut ( like me, even though the story is nothing special) since its cannon; OTR is not cannon but had Frank.

They actually tweaked survivors a bit in OTR. They kept the vastly improved pathing/AI from DR2 but severely weakened them in terms of health. So you need to arm them and escort them rather than just run straight back to the saferoom while they wade through millions of zombies unscathed. But it's not frustrating like DR1. I like it.

I think the only change I didn't agree with were checkpoints. I just don't use them. I don't think Sandbox mode was necessary either (why not just disregard time limits for a playthrough and restart the game when you want to see the story?) but everybody but me wanted it, so whatever.

Yeah, I liked Chuck a lot too after some initial apprehension at the lack of glorious Frank. OTR spoiler:
His boss fight in OTR was pretty depressing and I wish more fans of DR2 knew it existed.

OTR,
story was also 100x better because of one difference.

Rebecca surviving and hooking up with West ? Yeah, that was great. I don't understand the hate for this character; she was the best thing in the game.

I did not play the original Dead Rising 2, but I have bought and beaten OTR and loved it. I've read the differences between the two, checked videos of the original and I'm pretty sure I can say that OTR is the better game.

I bought OTR on Steam and I plan on pickling up Original DR2 when it goes down to 5 bucks.

But as it's a capcom game, I don't know if it ever will.

You can't go wrong with OTR. Includes a couple of new weapon combinations and a new area to goof off in that DR2 didn't have.

Chuck > Frank, so I'd go with DR2.

I think it was a bit silly to write a non-canon retelling of DR2 just so they could shoehorn Frank in.

I own DR2 on pc and still not played it yet, the biggest turn off for me after loving the first game is having to get to your daughter at certan times otherwise you fail, i'm sure that I would enjoy the game but I can't get around that annoying thing.

Does OTR remove that? I thought it was like another arcade-ish title reusing assets and frank west, but after reading this thread OTR is more like a remaster of 2?

You only need to worry about yourself in OTR. And yes it's basically an alternate universe retelling of 2.

Also I will say that collecting presents for Katie was one of my favorite things about that game. Fighting off hordes of zombies and still finding time to
bring back a pet tiger?
Dad of the forever.

Dead Rising 2: Off the Record has the better story, extra mode, larger area.

It's just not canon.

Edit: The online was a bit better for me in OtR, the map disappeared less and it DC'd much less.
But I've heard different stories on this. Your mileage may vary.

I've only played DR2, The only reason I would pick up OTR is if a friend wanted to play co-op

Besides Chuck Green is a better character

People hate on Chuck, but I liked him as a main character in Dead Rising 2. I hope they either keep him, or continue the trend and have a brand new protagonist in the next one. I do think that Off The Record was a mistake, seems like it would be hard to justify as a standalone package. If anything qualified as DLC, that would be it...but I guess if the sales of the original DR2 were mediocre, you don't want to bet on people buying DLC for it. Repackage, throw in a fan favorite character and hope things work out better the next time around.

I haven't really seen many people hate on Chuck, it's just that Capcom thinks the US is obsessed with Frank, so now he has to be everyone's favorite. (Which is weird, because Capcom can't even settle on a consistent look for Frank.)

They went with a more sluttier design for Stacey in OTR. Why they went with the change is beyond me.

It takes different twists and turns and you don't have to return for Katey

Cool, thanks.

Nope, they are extremely different.

I've been debating which one to play myself. Is Chuck's story good? I'm admittedly interested in what happens between him and his daughter. I'm willing to sacrifice some mechanical improvements from OTR if the story is compelling enough.

I'm only interested in single player.

There's a Chuck Greene character? Huh... Dead Rising is Frank West's game, not this wussy daddy Chuck's game.

Off the Record, obviously

Please do spoil it for me, someone -- I played both games and totally didn't pick up on why she looked different.
Well,
do you remember the last boss in OTR?
It's her, so her "sluttier" design is totally redeemed.

Also I'm with the peeps who actually liked Chuck and felt so bad for him in OTR :(
It was really sad.

If you buy the PC DVD version from Amazon, does it come with Steam code?

Reason I'm asking is it's $10 from Amazon, but $40 directly on Steam.
