At least 37 people are reported to have been killed in two explosions on the Metro system in central Moscow.

The first blast happened at the city's central Lubyanka station killing 25, reports quoting security sources said.

A second explosion less than an hour afterwards happened at the Park Kultury station killing 12, Russian news agency Tass reported.

Ten people were injured in the first blast and 12 in the second, Tass said, quoting police and officials.

An emergencies ministry spokeswoman said that at Lubyanka 14 people were killed in the train and 11 on the platform.

"The blast hit the second carriage of a metro train that stopped at Lubyanka, at 0756 (0356 GMT)," Irina Andrianova said.

"There was no fire. Rescuers of the Moscow emergencies department and firefighters are now working at the site," she added.

The headquarters of the Russian Federal Security Service (FSB), is located just above the station.

The second blast came about 40 minutes later, at 0838 (0438 GMT).

Lotsa bold, read the thing. proper fucked up. :(

Was gonna pos this a little while ago but forgot... I wonder what the motive is behind this and how the Russians will retaliate...

More war rhetoric and higher tensions in eastern Europe if nothing else... :\

hmm wonder who was behind this, just read about it about a minute ago.

Chechens, Ingushes, Dagestanians, Georgians, American CIA agents who shot up airports...

Some other details at Aljazeera:
"Both attacks took place on what is known as the Red Line, or line number one," Al Jazeera's Neave Barker, reporting from Moscow, said.

"This has to be seen as a politically motivated attack targeting what is perhaps one of the most symbolic signs of Russian authority in the capital when thousands of people are using one of the most heavily used metros in the world."

Unresolved conflict

Separatist fighters from the North Caucasus region of the country have been blamed for previous explosion in Moscow and elsewhere in the country.

Alexander Pikayev, a Russian political and security analyst told Al Jazeera that more attacks were to be expected as the conflict with Chechen separatists was still unresolved.

"The situation is still far from stable. More attacks to be expected from the separatists," he said.

"We have seen in the past few years and since 2004 attacks, police have been less present in the streets and heavier in undergrounds station in a bid to downplay the separatists threat."

Pikayev said that the situation in remained tense in Chechnya despite the government's efforts to contain fighters there and in neighbouring republics.

"The government is trying to pour more money to create a better economic situation. Of course this will take years, meanwhile the situation will remain tight," he said.

Northern Caucasus was name dropped on the radio just now so I'm putting my money on some terrorist cell from Chechnya

Medvedev and Putin are going to rain pain and hail hurt over Chechnya or Dagestan if these attacks are tracked back there.

I'm sure that whatever evidence the Russian Government submit will be as flimsy as the US-EU media make it out to be.

lol.

Ahh, war is fun again. Cant wait for the gleeful posting of pictures of Russian tanks, jets and soldiers in face masks.

Also it doesn't seem like they tried to inflict a whole lot of damage though 34 died so you have to wonder why do such a small attack when you know the potential retaliation will be 10x worse.

Reports of suicide bombers setting off the blast. Excuse my ignorance on the matter, have checens used suicide bombers before?

All the time.

Word on the air-waves is that it's a small cell from "northern caucasus" of muslim extremists. Female suicide bombers was used is the latest I've heard. The fact that the attacks where close to FSB is going to amplify shit ten-fold too. -_-

The retaliation will be heavy-handed and unify their allies against the Russians. That and the US-EU media will be on Russia's ass as well which will expose double-standards on the west's part.

I dont even see why Russia want to hold onto Chechnya when they should be given the independence they deserve, just like South Ossetia.

What makes you think they'll wait for the attacks to be tracked to those countries?

You need a justification for something, no matter how flimsy it may be. Just ask Colin Powell.

Any word on the victims? My dad flew to Moscow 2 days ago. I don't believe anything happened to him but I can't reach his cell :/

In all probability the cellular network has been overloaded. Trying to phone my buddy in London during the 7/7 bombings was impossible. I hope your dad's ok.

I was in those stations when I was a kid :(... When they say it's one of the biggest metro system in the world they're not kidding, it could have been way way worse.

thanks I'm sure he is :)

Just saw this. Very, very sad.

Is it true that it was a suicide bombing? Have Chechen terrorists used suicide bombings before? I always thought they used the more conventional "plant a bomb, get out, detonate" approach.

Dagestan explosions 'kill nine'

At least nine people have been killed in two explosions in the town of Kizlyar in Russia's North Caucasus republic of Dagestan, officials say.

In the first, a car blew up near the offices of the local interior ministry and the FSB security service.

The second explosion happened about 20 minutes later on the same street.

This comes two days after 39 people were killed in two suicide bombings on the Moscow Metro, for which officials have blamed North Caucasus militants.

Prime Minister Vladimir Putin has called on security forces to "scrape from the sewers" those responsible, while President Dmitry Medvedev has asked for proposals for new anti-terrorism laws.

Violence in Dagestan has escalated in the past two years following the crackdown on Islamist militants in neighbouring Chechnya. In June 2009, the region's interior minister was shot dead.

Shit is getting tight.
