Dear GAF, buy Sonic Generations. ...no seriously.

No, seriously. I'm not a crazy Sonic fan, at all. I did play Colors some and I enjoyed it, but only because I didn't shell out 50 dollars for it because I was at a friend's house. Like many people here, I'm sure I got excited for Sonic Generations because of fat Sonic.

I really had no intention of buying this game. At all. Then the good reviews started pouring in. I had Uncharted 3 and Battlefield 3 to buy, so I figured why not, this would make a decent free game at Target; I already own Batman. Boy am I glad I made this decision.

I'm currently playing Sonic instead of Uncharted. No joke. Where Uncharted is gorgeous, cinematic amazingness, Sonic is just... good gaming, plain and simple with no frills. I don't feel like I have to sit down for a long period at a time to play it, I can play an act or two and leave. I don't have to make a time investment.

More importantly, the game is just FUN. The modern Sonic parts are based off the Colors engine and type of gameplay (which as a lot of GAF will tell you is pretty solid) and the classic levels are just... awesome. They're what Sonic honestly should be. I just finished the fat Sonic Crisis City level (after playing the modern Sonic Crisis City level) and it was really, really great. Just like the rest of the game so far. Just play Act 2 before Act 1, so you can see the reactions to fat Sonic. They're pretty amazing. Chaos Emerald challenges are boss battles, which so far have been pretty awesome (fought Shadow and Metal Sonic.) Story is pretty barebones as well, which I like. Plus this game just at times oozes the character that the original Sonic games have. It's really, really solid.

The only sad thing is that whole "Sega has no plans to bring back fat Sonic" thing. While the modern sonic parts are still fun, it's evident that the classic parts shine. Regardless, they've done something pretty amazing here and made the new Sonic parts FUN as well, so you don't feel that pissed off that you can't play just the old Sonic parts. Only real gripe about the game so far? You have to play a challenge in each stage to unlock the boss to progress.

Regardless, Amazon has this game on sale for like, 35 bucks right now. Totally fair price point. Totally worth your gaming time at that price.

Sonic 4 Part 2 better use the Classic Sonic engine from this game. Seriously. This game just shows that they CAN make the game we all want.

Edit for Steam/comp people -

I'd like to make an addendum that goes go PC/Steam with this if you have the option. It's not because the game is bad or has issues on consoles, but more because I saw it at full 1080p/60fps recently and fucking Christ above.

It's like seeing Mario Galaxy for the first time. Prettiest and most fun Sonic game ever.
So uh, yeah? Plus it's cheaper on Steam apparently?

The PC version is beautiful and runs great at a consistent 60fps by the by. It's also Steamworks and $25 on Amazon. 360 version is better than the PS3 version if those are your two choices. PC trumps all obviously and is cheaper.

Definitely. The PC version is the version to get, and it's only $25 on Amazon. 60 fps goodness instead of that weaksauce 30 fps, sub HD stuff on the consoles. Seriously, I tried the demos on the consoles and then tried the PC version and the console versions are not even in the same ballpark.

What Uncharted can learn from Sonic?
Please. Uncharted is absolutely fantastic. It's a brilliant game. But at times, it has more in common with a movie than a game. That's not a bad thing at all; and it's not worth bringing this stupid fodder in at all.

And after that, you guys should get a hold of Sonic Colours if you haven't tried it out yet.

Yeah I got Generations and U3 on the same day and have been playing Sonic more :P
Same.

I don't want to out him, but a prominent, sensible GAFfer tweeted that he's enjoying SG more than Uncharted 3. So you're not even the first person to make that specific claim, hahaha.

Did this really need to be in another thread? The OT covers all of this....
It's one of those games where you kind of feel like you have to highlight "no seriously guys it's good!!!" due to past history. Especially as we had no idea the PC version wouldn't blow until yesterday. I actually got the 360 version due to being skeptical of Sega's PC efforts (also because my PC is no longer in the same room as my TV ;_;)

Tested the PC version here and loved it.

Seriously, 1080P, AA, 60 fps, way better graphics than the console version, and has official support for the X360 controller.

Very tempted to buy it on steam. 30 bucks for this game is totally worth it.

Oh, did I mention that the music is fantastic? The music is fantastic.

Exactly. Pretty much every Sonic game for the past who knows how many years has been trash, and even Sonic Colors got a bit bleh the farther you got into it, IMO.

Are there more 2D levels than 3D?
well, it's equal between and classic and modern if that's what you mean, but every modern stage has a fair bit of side-view platforming.

but if you mean 'are there more genesis-era levels,' then no.

$25.49 on Amazon

I rented it, but I'm tempted to jump on the PC version for that price.

If there's one game I would love to like this gen it's probably Sonic Generations.
But as much as I try it's like I will never like "modern Sonic". I am therefore condemned to see this game as "half a game" and I can't buy half of a game.
In the meantime I am also playing TONS of great games and many of them are totally top notch platformers so it's not like I miss something in my gaming... or Sonic.

Keep hearing it's worse than Colours (which really needs to be on other platforms if it's so damn good). So I'll wait until it's 20.

Well, I'm glad you guys enjoyed it, but I tried the game and didn't like it at all. Then again, I was never really a huge Sonic fan to begin with (but I do kinda like 1-3+Knuckles in some ways). The classic Sonic parts of Generations are decent, I think it's the closest they've gotten to the Genesis stuff since that era, but I still can't find any appeal whatsoever in modern Sonic gameplay with the dashing forward and locking on business.

Colors is modern sonic, so no, Generations is not worse.

Classic Sonic is amazing and modern sonic is merely there this time, not too shitstainingly atrocious. So...that's something!

PC Version was supercheap on Greenmangaming. Got it for like 11€ or something like that. :D

It's really good, I just suck at some modern stages because they are often too fast...

Grabbed it off of redbox and been playing alot last few days.

Best Sonic game since genesis era imo.

Problem is still lots of shitty side modes like knuckles digging for coins etc. It was enough for me to quit after first boss.

Not nearly enough friends or edgy characters in it for my taste ;)

But yeah, it's on my radar. Waiting for bomba day pricing to decide...

Yes, it was needed, I never would have given this game a look had this thread not popped up.

I mean, cmon, its Sonic. I automatically assume its garbage these days.

There are so many different types of gaming experiences, it doesn't surprise me. I work two jobs and I'm going to grad school; I don't always have time to sit down and play something that is the the pinacle (so far) of a cinematic game experience. Sonic is the complete opposite of that, and it's luckily a fantastic, fantastic game.

Tried the demo and classic mode gave me motion sickness.
They've polished it up a bit since the demo. I'm sorry to hear that though. People who get motion sickness while playing games always makes me a bit sad. :/

Really?

Okay, cool. I honestly didn't know it was passable, haha. I figured it was the usual Sonic trash. I'll pick it up when it hits ~$30.
