Dear GAF, buy Sonic Generations. ...no seriously.

But wait. Of this list, three of the games are good, and Secret Rings is a fantastic game

Bought it, never really liked sonic back then (haven't played any of this generation or the previous one), quite enjoying this one.

Don't understand the whining.

Why are you all so complicated.

Can't, sorry:

-That modern sonic shite is still there.

This is true. But at least this time we have Classic Sonic goodness. It's not Genesis perfect, but still LEAGUES better than the shit we got with Sonic 4. If that's not good enough for you, the PC version will be modded so the physics/gameplay are Genesis perfect.

-There's shitty friends, lots of shitty little friends.

Not playable. If they are seriously detracting you from buying the game, that's pretty immature. I think you can turn off character voices if they annoy you that much.

-I was told to buy Sonic Unleashed and Sonic 4 because they were awesome, and they indeed were not. I've learned my lesson.

No. Those games are dogshit. Generations is legit good (I wouldn't say great). The classic stages alone are worth the $35 price tag. Watch some vids if you don't believe me. I could tell Unleashed and Sonic 4 were god awful from the vids.

-Since Takashi Iizuka is the gaming equivalent of a criminal, unpunished for taking one of the most legendary franchises in gaming and completely destroying it through his own incompetence, I refuse to do anything that contributes to his pay-cheque. He's the worst man in gaming, and I mean that sincerely. He's worse than Kotick.

No argument here :lol

but you could buy used

-Seriously, why is there only three stages (and maybe a boss) from the good games? Most of the zones seem to have originated from the post-Sonic and Knuckles cavalcade of crap. I have no desire to relive that rubbish.

I agree with this. There should be way more stages from the golden era, and I'm hoping a sequel fixes this. But the shittiness of the new games doesn't really rub off on the classic Sonic gameplay, with one exception.

-I don't want to reward this company with my money any more, frankly.

buy it used.

There's your reasons. These games range from mediocre to sick, and many of us have learned our lesson. In a good number of the above releases, enthusiasts told us that it was different this time, that this one was really really good, and each time parting with our money led to us owning another piece of Takashi Iizuka's congealed excrement. Lesson learned.

Also, the idea of giving a company money when it took a franchise with games like Sonic 2, Sonic CD and Sonic 3 and Knuckles and turned it into the list above, well it seems wrong somehow.
You might want to check your dictionary. Sick means awesome.

If your perspective on Sonic hasn't been tainted or tarnished like it has been for someone like Mama Robotnik (poor guy) and/or Colors hype made you curious, go for it

If Sonic has left a bad taste (similar to an old chili dog) in your mouth, proceed with caution. Play the demo, rent it, play at a friend's house.

I'll get it eventually. I just have a hefty backlog, and I wish i could just play classic sonic. Or that the game was all classic sonic. Still the early impressions and videos look interesting and being a huge genesis sonic fan, i'll have to own it at some point.

Bought it last week when the thread about it being $37 on Amazon popped up. Didn't follow the game at all or expect much from it, but I'm really enjoying it.

Got caught in the GAF hype and bought the PC version via Amazon download today for under $26 (installs via Steam, BTW)...my first Sonic game since the Japanese version of Sonic Adventure about 12-13 years ago (which I could not get far because of the language barrier...and never bothered with any other release of the game after that since I spent so much on a Japanese Dreamcast and SA at the time before it came out in America).

Anyhoo...fun game. =)

I love it how people bitch about Sonic being shit but when it looks like SEGA have finally done what the fans wanted people say no.

Yes I'm using GAF as a collective.

Sounds like it might be a decent purchase when it reaches $10. Definitely for $5.

EDIT - Checked out some youtube videos, LMMFAO at the advice Chao gives you during loading screens. "Use the spin dash to attack your enemies!" NO FUCKING WAY! REALLY?!?!

The demo was more than enough to turn me off when the viewpoint shifts from 2D to 2.5->3D at moments. It looks nice on the corkscrew because it doesn't suddenly change the camera view but on the rest of the zones as classic Sonic it's annoying/infuriating.

Agree with the OP on this one. I have always liked Sonic games, but some of the ones over the recent years just sucked. Generations is overly impressive, great graphics and plays great. If you have a choice and you PC is decent, definately get the PC version. I am running at solid 60fps with everything set to max and the game is drop dead gorgeous.

Like someone mentioned, it is a fun "pop in and play" game. One where you can do 1-2 levels for each Sonic and then do something else. Just some good old fun!

Btw if you can, get the PC version. Its the cheapest, best looking, and best performing. Plus whatever mods the Sonic modding community can think of.
Is that a threat?

First time in my life I'm dreading community-made mods.

lol, i agree. gotta love how we finally get a good 3D Sonic game and people who haven't played it are automatically dismissing it. Check some reviews and gameplay footage. It's really well done.

GAF recommended Unleashed, 4, Black Knight and Colours to me. Also heralded the Secret Ring as being "better than 2006!".

That's an 0 for 5 track record, so I'm definitely wary.

That said, the Classic Sonic levels do indeed look great. 6th time's the charm?

I plan to pick it up eventually, but I do have one thing I want to get off my chest:

The screen shots I've seen, and the Greenhill classic level that came out a while back... I absolutely love the way the game looks. This is how all Sonic environments should look.

Did fans actually want more modern Sonic stuff? Honest question.
In all my years, I've only seen people clamoring for a pure classic Sonic game. Generations has some of that, but it isn't pure, so is it really exactly what fans wanted?

Well at the very least, Secret Rings wasn't a broken unfinished mess

...May as well have been with the controls, NOT THE POINT

Modern Sonic, when done right (as in Generations and Colors), is fucking awesome.

oddly enough, the modern Sonic levels in Generations is more fun than the Classic ones, imo. Some of the levels are mindblowing. Classic Sonic levels are very traditional so nothing really new there.

whether fans wanted it or not, Sega did a fine job with the modern Sonic stages this time.

No, plenty of people complained about the non-Werehog stages in Unleashed, and rightfully so, since they were actually worse than the Werehog stuff.

That said, the Modern Sonic stages in Generations are leagues better than Unleashed and Colors.

Sonic has been shit long enough to have raised a generation of fans who only know Modern Sonic.

Talking about "the fans" doesn't make sense since there are several distinctive camps, even here on GAF.

Well, I think that's another issue. I was only questioning the assertion that Sega did exactly what fans wanted, not whether the game ended up being good.

To be fair, anything is better than Sonic 2006.

Many of the backdrops were great in this game. The Hedgehog Engine seems to do some nice things.

The problem is that there is now a dichotomy of Sonic fans after Sonic tried to transition into 3D. People who are fine with the Modern stuff, and people who only like the Classic stuff. SEGA were damned if they did and damned if they didn't now that there is a whole generation of players who were raised on the Modern style of play.

I think they've finally figured out what to do with the Modern Sonic mechanics. I've been fine with Modern Sonic gameplay for a while after Colours, Unleashed and now Generations. Now it isn't just BOOST BOOST BOOOOOOOOST, but you have to watch what you're doing while using other skills like drifting, stomping, lightspeed dashing, etc. The platforming sections in the Modern Sonic portions were a wonderful addition to that style of gameplay, I think. Unleashed, Colours and Generations were Sonic Team's ways of taking some steps in the right direction. Hopefully with more polish and tightening of mechanics and level design, they could pull off something even better with the Modern playstyle.

People mostly have an issue with the other gameplay modes with the friends, Werehog, etc from what I've seen in Sonic threads.

oh ok, probably would've been easier if they made two separate games instead of trying to combine them into one story. glad they didn't mess it up here.

From what aspect(s)? I've actually never heard this opinion before.

There are definitely lots of fans that like the boost gameplay
unfortunately.

Luckily, they've finally acknowledged the fans who love the 2D gameplay. And no, Sonic "4" doesn't fucking count.

I hope the 2D Sonic gameplay continues, and ideally, the games split. New Sonic the Hedgehog, featuring classic Sonic, all Genesis style stages.

If you're drunk, you can pretend the Werehog levels are a 3D sequel to Ristar.

I know. They look fantastic. Playing the Greenhill demo made me wish the game was a 3D exploration game because I just wanted to run around and check out the scenery. I love the way the game looks.

sad to see so many talking themselves out of an awesome game, their loss though.

went with the PS3 one, is the 360 version much better? prolly gonna double-dip when a steam sale gets cheap enough.

That's some DEDICATION right there.

the remixed music for the stages are awesome too.

I didn't want this crap. I want a good 2D sonic game and no modern sonic bs. I'm not buying this because I don't like modern sonic, never have and never will, end of.
