Breakout screenwriter-director Justin Simien is bringing Dear White People to the small screen.

Netflix has handed out a straight-to-series order for a comedy based on his 2014 crowded-funded movie Dear White People, The Hollywood Reporter has learned.

The 10-episode, 30-minute series hails from Lionsgate Television and will, like the film, follow a diverse group of students of color as they navigate a predominantly white Ivy League college where racial tensions are often swept under the rug. The series is a send up of "post-racial" America that also weaves a universal story about forging one's own unique path.

Simien will write the series and direct the first episode. Devon Shepard (House of Lies; Weeds), Stephanie Allain Bray (Dear White People) and Julia Lebedev (Dear White People) will exec produce the series, which will begin this year for a debut in 2017. It's unclear if any of the movie's original cast — including Tyler James Williams, Tessa Thompson and Dennis Haysbert — will return for the TV series.

Edit: Just noticed the title typo 😭

Now what's the next step in your master plan?
I wonder how many Twitter and Facebook posts will be stating that they are never watching Netflix and are moving to Amazon Prime after hearing this news?

I hope this means that the film will be brought back onto Netflix. I was meaning to watch it but didn't have the time and when I did, I couldn't find it.

Cool. I thought the movie was good, if a bit undercooked. I think it actually might work better as a TV series where they can let arcs play out a little longer and imbue the characters with a little more pathos.

Loved the movie, so I'm hyped for this one. I wonder if they're gonna bring back any of the cast members though.

Thought the movie was different but still OK. I'm interested in the series. I feel like it should have been a much longer movie with better exposition or a series in the beginning.

Totally. STill gotta make a webm of the credits sequence for "all lives matter" threads.

Movie was pretty meh.

Kind of funny how this could easily play along with the movie though, given the very last scene and the whole idea.

Supersonic, idiotic, disconnecting, not respecting, who would really ever wanna go and top that
So when do we expect the first article that says Netflix should have a "Dear All People" movie? Two hours from now?

Yeah I didn't like the movie as much as I looked the ideas. This has the potential to be much better.

I agree. If they maintained the same plot/characters, I think a longform series would do it a better service then the movie. I turned the movie off halfway through despite being intrigued by the premise.

Hail, peons, for I have come as ambassador from the great and bountiful Blueberry Butt Explosion
I've been meaning to see the movie for some time but I don't think there's a legal way to see this here in Japan.

Glad the show is on Netflix. I'll be able to see it with no problems.
