Death Stranding Discussion (12/2016 trailer)

Someone on the Death Stranding subreddit took high res screencaps of Decima Assets being shown of during the panel, which give you great close up look on details such as the possessed M10 Wolverine tank, Del Toro's model or a close up of Mads assault rifle and outfit.

Of course the absolute highlight is the Spaghetti tank delivery service straight to the office:

'Dem details.

Just watched GamesRadar's video analysis of the trailer. There are some many little details packed in that trailer. Can't wait to see what this game brings.

We can discredit those 4chan leaks now, right? Since Del Toro's involvement in this game is only the fact that he took a couple hours out of his day to get himself scanned as a 3D model

Has there been ANY word on a PC release for this?

With other PS4 exclusive games we'd usually see "Only on PlayStation" branding on it, but it's been gone with Death Stranding. And since we've only got word about the game during PSX, I doubt they want to talk about other platforms.

I think personally it's still coming to PC. But Sony is just hush hush about the other platform release just to bring attention to their own platform.

Yongyea has made a 15 min analysis, worth checking out since it covers details you may not have consciously picked up on.

All I can say is, wow, the trailer is even more detailed than I give it credit for.
Didn't watch the whole thing yet but I'm surprised he missed the scar across GDT's forehead. Looks like a typical surgery scar with stitching.

Unless he says it later in the video but I watched 8 minutes and he had plenty of moments to point it out. A few other things he missed, too.

At the PSX panel Kojima confirmed that Del Toro will not voiced his character however someone else will. Could the scar on his head be hinting at brain transplant!!!

Kinda just skimmed this thread, but something stood out for me. Not sure if anyone has pointed this out yet (probably) but:

That baby has their left eye closed, just like the eye that is messed up on Mads.

It was missing from the trailer for The Last of Us: Part II, so I think that one's also coming to PC at some point. : p

I watched yongyeas analysis and definitely some cool observations. The white umbillical chord, the connections to Reedus' character and similarities to the first trailer. The hand prints on the walls. I cant believe I never noticed when he was entering the tunnel that the ground was now covered in sharks. The whole umbillical chord shit is creepy and cool.

There is something about an army of skelleton soldiers all decked out in WWII gear that I find haunting and awesome. Like, what the hell is going on? I cant fucking wait to see more of this game. I definitely think this is going to be something special.

His full analysis is still coming. That was just a quick observation video. I love how deep Yong goes on this shit

Normans character has the scar over his belly button so he cant connect umbillical chords to himself. Huh. I'm thinking Norman and Mads are part of an alien race that has taken over Earth and that baby is the last human and Norman and Del Toro are trying to save it.

Its like they feed off of the life of things through their umbillical chords and everything is dead. So the baby is like the last living human or something and Mads needs it for whatever reason.

I can't get over how visionary this game seems. Like Metal Gear was holding Kojima back or something, ha. Most films don't have teasers or trailers this stylish and enigmatic. If the full game's story is as interesting and ambitious as the trailer sets it up to be, DS might have ended up being what proved to Ebert video games can be art.

Just had a thought about something else Kojima might be trying to say with this game. No doubt others will have noticed the connection but I've not kept up with the whole thread and I'm feeling kinda smart and wanted to post this anyway lol.

You see all the sea life on the tank, and the black oil gushing out. In the first trailer the black oil handprints and it bubbling up from under the sand was a prominent feature too. I'm guessing this oil seems to be harvested from living beings to power machines. Now of course real oil as we know it is the ancient remnants of past life on Earth that created oil over billions of years. So my thinking is that this game is definitely going to be talking about climate change, and probably some kind of take on the fact that we have been expending all of this locked away energy, energy that took billions of years to foster, now being used up in a matter of generations, and of course unlocking tremendous amounts of past carbon dioxide that had been locked away allowing our climate to remain stable. There also seems to be a clear theme of everything, past present and future being connected too, I think an allegory of the entirely closed ecosystem that is our planet and climate.

I'd be staggered if this wasn't a big part of what Kojima is trying to say with this game here the more I look at it. Then of course the military complex which has brought ruin to us all is the one harvesting all of this life for energy purposes which of course will be another element to the story too.

God I cannot wait for this. I'm so glad he's done with MGS actually, the backstory in MGS seems far too deep and convoluted for me to delve into when I've not completed all the games. It's actually pretty cool we get Kojima unshackled and creating a brand new narrative. The fact it looks and sounds fucking incredible is just beautiful icing on the cake.

Also, even with Scorpio around the corner I think these Sony first party games (more or less?) will be punching the PS4 way above it's weight and not give Sony much to worry about. They're doing incredible stuff with the hardware, yes even on base PS4 when you see games like Uncharted 4.
whoa...this is cool speculation right here.

Between the fart jokes and creepshots.

TBH as happy as I am for Kojima I really do hope he gets over his hollywood fetish soon. You can't fanboy all over people working for you imo.

Why not? Working with people who make you excited and inspired is going to result in a better product. It's more important for devs to be happy than it is to be stiff and 'professional' or whatever.

You know, I was really bummed out about Silent Hills but maybe losing that was worth it for getting this game. Not saying I am not bummed out anymore, but Death Stranding looks awesome and Kojima's new disposition seems a lot more optimistic than the frankly toxic atmosphere at Konami.

What about you guys? Would you preferred Silent hills or Death Stranding?

Death Stranding. Kojima can go as crazy as he wants without pissing SH fans off. Silent Hill needed to be put to rest anyway.

Kojima's work is amazing visually. It falls apart when you have to listen to the awful dialogue and endless exposition.

I dunno, man. I'm sure the game will be cool. But based on MGS4, PW and MGSV, I wouldn't get my hopes up.

Doesn't matter to me. I'm a fan, so I don't know anything about the truly behind the scenes stuff. Kojima will make the best game he can either way.

You bringing up MGS4 and V is getting my hopes pretty high man, damn those were amazing

I've just remembered! There actually is a Sony engine that ran on PC and Xbox!

It's the Phyre Engine aka Journey's engine.

Unraveled was running on it and it's released on PC and Xbox.

I am honestly 50/50 on Kojima's dialogue, even in MGSV which is criticized for its story/writing has some amazing cassette tapes and monologues, this one from Skullface for example:

"I was born in a small village. I was still a child when we were raided by soldiers - foreign soldiers. Torn from my elders I was made to speak their language. With each new post my masters changed along with the words they made me speak. With each change - I changed too. My thoughts, personality, How I saw right and wrong... Words Can Kill."

The whole idea of language as a crux of ones identity and the cultural genocide of the English language was interesting as hell even if it wasn't executed too well.

Death Stranding. Simply because I want to see what he can do with complete creative freedom. With that said, I would've loved to see what he could do with Silent Hills. It's a series built around playing with your head, so what could he have done with that? In some ways it seemed like a perfect series for Kojima to play around with.

It's something that'll always be one of gamings big "What if" scenarios, like what if the Nintendo Playstation actually happened. I guess the best we could ever hope for with it is that one day Kojima or Del Toro will go into some detail about the story and game. But that'd probably hurt even more. Like when it was revealed that Junji Ito was helping with it.

Man, what a bummer that this is what Kojima chose to work on. I just have zero interest in horror/shock/supernatural themes in games. Wish he was doing something more grounded, political, and/or dramatic instead

You think that this might be the Citizen Kane of video games?

Hmmmm...obviously too early to say, but given all the talent involved, yeah, it could be something spectacular. Seems like it's still heavily rooted in sci-fi and fantasy though, so I dunno, maybe the Watchmen of video games or something.

There is some great writing there, especially the bell tape. For someone who consumes so much film and TV you would expect him show, rather than tell most of his story.

Like metal gear?

This trailer suggests the plot will be much, much less grounded in reality than MGS ever was. Those flourishes of MGS were generally cheap tricks to color climactic experiences, but the vast majority of the game was at least believably corporeal. Enough that I could push through the supernatural/woo bullshit.

I have no interest in fighting these zombie / skull soldiers.

Do you know something we don't? This trailer will probably have shock and supernatural themes, but so did MGS to a (probably) lesser extent. It could very easily still be somehow connected to politics and I'd assume enough drama around. Grounded is the only thing it might lack a bit, unless all this weird shit is part of hallucinations or weird dreams or something like that.

Kojima's flair for the dramatic and eye for stylish visuals is just unmatched in the games industry. Partly because most games directors aren't concerned with getting too crazy, having to fit the mold of your typical FPS, RPG or open world title. And now that he has free reign..
