Just learned about this, didn't see a thread. Gizmodo summarized everything concisely but just in case:

Seems that this image from has been circulating since last Friday. It creates a theory - again, debunked - that an author on the show made a self-insert character that Blossom is in love with.

Word of warning. This is from 4chan, so expect tastelessness.

By itself, looks damning. But then you get a pretty reasonable explanation from someone at the Cartoon Network:

So it seems like the character is an insert in the sense that his appearance and voice are based off the writer, but it's not actually the writer who is responsible for that. It's not a self-insert. The character existed on paper already, then other people involved in the cartoon decided to model him after this writer as a joke.

My thoughts. First off, good on Kraft for responding quickly. I don't know what the fan response has been like but I imagine that it would damage Goldman's reputation if the rumour went unchecked.

Second, I don't think there's anything innately wrong with self-inserts, at least not to the point that they'd be worth drama even if this was true. They're admittedly cheesy by nature though. They're probably best kept to self-mockery or cheesy romances where the reader should also be projecting themselves onto the main character.

Third, this is probably still kind of a bad idea to add to the cartoon. Regardless of anything else, the character are still little kids (in either kindergarten or elementary school), and they drew a real person involved in the cartoon (or at least someone who is meant to closely resemble them) in a romantic context with them. With the attitude that people have towards stranger danger, that seems like a recipe for disaster, and they should have at least have put in an effort to make sure it wasn't misinterpreted.

Regardless of the truth the PPG reboot is still garbage.

Yarp.

The fact that this suspicion even sprouted up in the first place is troubling. I'm glad the show isn't doing well.

Okay, i can buy the following:

-Character designer designing the character after the nerdy writer as a joke
-People having the humor enough to let/make him voice the character for shits and giggles.

However, that doesn't explain why the character appears mostly/only in episodes written by him.

Worst case scenario he is indeed a creep with a waifu, best case scenario he's deliberately writing episodes that will double his paycheck via voice acting.

Should have stopped at that.

Figures the only people who gave a shit are on /co/

To be fair, other sites including tumblr and Reddit had been circulating the rumour too, without 4chan input.

This even hit GAF's general western animation thread.

Lol. I wish for this to be true just because of what happened to the show. We'll always have the classics though. You can't damage those.

About the biggest who gives a shit news I have heard in a good while

I think it's kind of interesting by way of the relationship between the creators and the audience. They threw in this in-joke for themselves. Probably figured that no one outside the studio would get it, so it's okay. Then it makes it onto 4chan, and from there gets onto Twitter.

That doesn't debunk anything. Ok, so he's not a character he created. But he still said HEY I want to be casted as the dude lusting over three year olds and I want to character to look and sound exactly like me.

Maybe they wanted him to rewrite / adlib the character's dialog so that it sounds more like himself? Half the episodes also have Haley Mancini listed as a writer.

High level play there

Off topic, but this image is dumb. A load of it is the wrong way round. Why would someone who reads comic books be less geeky than someone who only reads super hero comics? Wouldn't the person deep into all comics be the bigger geek? Same with the sci fi readers. Surely the people only reading sci fi based on TV shows are a lighter level of geek because they're casuals.

Stupid flow chart.

It's not about the "bigger geek", it's about feeling superior. So the guy who doesn't only read super hero comics feels more knowledgeable and elite about that medium.

Why is one of the image the character marry Blossom ?????
WTF, wasn't all the PPG like kindergarten age ?

Looks like it's referencing Phantom of the Opera. Look at the guy's mask.

If it was a better show I would have cared more. My initial response is that's kind of wierd but w/e. Now my response is that's still wierd, but not as wierd, and the show is still garbage.

Soooo....

I like how you said it doesn't debunk anything yet immediately after, proved that you didn't actually read the OP.

Reminds me of when especially certain shippers say that Michael Chi is pushing Gency/Emergenji cause he has the hearts for Mercy and Genji is his self insert character.

Which is completely wrong.

You see guys, it's an insert, not actually a self-insert, guys, come on!

Like this statement is supposed to convert shit writing into good writing automatically.

i think the clear intent of the statements is trying to salvage the writer's reputation.

Where the fuck does the statement try to say it's good writing? Damn some of you really suck at reading.

Oh, now I see it.

Still a bit creepy.
