Yeah who needs PS4 nextbox. We should wait until 2014 until market dies, right Pachter?
Huge drop even if consoles went down in price. Makes sense...
I am surprise they are selling this well considering the age. tbh

This to me is ringing bell, warning sign. Time to show hint at E3 what is next, even if it is for 2013, to keep people excited.

wasn't this december a record breaking month for hardware?

"Last month, retailers in the US pulled in $3.99 billion in sales, according to the NPD Group. That's a 21 percent dip from the $5.07 billion posted for December of 2010. No segment of the industry took as proportionately big a dip as hardware sales, which shrank 28 percent year-over-year to $1.32 billion. Accessory sales were down 27 percent to $628.7 million, while software sales were as close to a bright spot as the month's numbers yielded, down just 14 percent to $2.04 billion. "

8% on the whole year.

I don't think they're still selling consoles in the red now. Also new consoles do not = more profit or more sales, if anything, they'll sell under what they expected and shareholders will drop out driving their stocks even lower if they don't have similar performance to what's out now.

It's natural for this stage of the cycle and how old these consoles are. Price drops gets at least another year out of all of them IMO. Millions of consoles were still moved.. NPD aren't freaked out by this in their analysis so I'm not sure why GAF is?

It's because some people are wanting all the new consoles to be out soon instead of 12 - 18 months.

I don't know how introducing or rushing out new consoles are going to be a good thing, I would rather have them take their time and release consoles in 2013/2014 not anytime sooner, I bet we will see big sales in the coming months with all the game releases.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHHA.

So people are not buying 249$ box, and you think they will more willingly buy 399$ box?

Logic time: people are buying less entertainment products because they anticipate a worse economic situation due to global crisis, not because all Joe Averages are tech-junkies, who refuse to buy anything but top-spec products.

arent ps3 & wii mainly responsible for this drop? "-22.6% YOY" & "-55% YOY"

and the 360 sold so damn many in november, its not much of a surprise its -8.6% YOY for december

Ehh, talk to me when 360 doesn't keep going up year over year etc. And also if a $50 price drop doesn't work, if not two 50 drops.

2011=7.2

Now Nintendo clearly needs help, but then again they are the one farthest along!

This still probably looks like exactly what you'd expect for a 2013-14 release, heck probably too good as the HD twins are still rising according to NPD (up 9% HD software or whatever?)

Edit: der we go

Bright spots came from HD console software sales, which were up 9 percent in 2011,
-NPD

Honestly it looks like two more years at least, not one, to me. 360 can probably plateau for two years, and throw in those price cuts. Really honestly maybe 3-4 to start a good decline. But we'll see in the coming months.

Nothing can expand forever.

I think consoles are still doing rather well... remember a lot of things are competing nowadays and the PC has been very strong as well lately with vastly more powerful hardware starting to wow (no pun intended :) some of the people.

A new generation is needed.. but not yet. 2013 yes... this year... no.

I expect the 360 to grow a lot more... MS might drop the price to ridiculous low numbers once they announce the next gen system.

Or, everyone that is going to get these consoles has one. Its a little late in the game to be picking one up for the first time, IMO. Its gone stale. New ones please.

A 21% drop! That's 1/5 of the entire market that went up in flames. Another drop like this next year and the revenue for the gaming industry is nearly cut in half. And we're not even looking at the disaster that is the European game-market at the moment. Why do you think Global Foundries and IBM are shipping new next-gen chips in high volume on 32nm for gaming, media and graphics during the second half of 2012? To shit on them?

lol, I posted a good conspiracy for you in the real npd thread.

Also if they showed things at E3 to get people excited, wouldn't more people stop buying their current consoles resulting in an even larger crash?

The crowd that picks up a $99 Wii at walmart is different from the crowd waiting for the next $400 machine and PGR5.

Lower numbers since 2005.
2005 was just as 2011 a transitory year, with DS and 360 just launched, PS2 still big but with 5 years on the back and GC and Xbox dead.

I think there are some massive over reactions to these numbers. It's the end of the generation cycle and thus Hw is slowing down (though at this point in its lifetime still doing much better than last gen was). I'm not saying a drop like this isn't bad but it's not an indication that the console business is dying.

But it is only stale for someone like you who has had the consoles for some years now? Because if I am going 360/PS3 right now, then there are a lot of games you can pick up and play for the first time and it would be a fresh experience imo. So the opposite of stale more or less.

There's a hell of a lot more of them that buy game systems, that's for sure.

Usually you would expect most consoles to be at market penetration price point after 5-6 years. Neither the PS3 or 360 are anywhere near that at this stage, so such a decline is, well, expected.

It's because the Wii's super over the top sales are dwindling. They're just normaliZing out :P

Yeah. I love the doom and gloom over Wii sales which, while not great by any means, would still be solid numbers if they were for Xbox or PS3 in past years, The fact is Wii has already lapped the competition and probably reached saturation (debatable).

I don't think anyone thinks will get ps4 or xbox next before fall 2013.

I think the next Xbox will launch right around the same time as the WiiU. Sony no more than a year later. All three on the market, and at least two establishing themselves by fall 2013.

With the WiiU sporting modernish hardware, I don't think MS in particular wants another Wii scenario. The market taken before they launch on a platform with "good enough" hardware. All three will be on shelves by no later than fall 2013. I'm hedging bets that MS is in a better position to launch a new system than Sony is. Neither will give Nintendo any more than a year, and the rumblings in the industry are MS isn't going to even give them that.

Is Sony still losing money on every PS3 sold? Breaking even? Making profit, and how much?
When asked if Sony ever considered reducing the price by $100, Koller said the company never targeted knocking off more than $50 from the start and stated it will continue to profit on each console sold with this new price introduction.

"It is still profitable," he said. "We're not going into the red."
