Deep Down’s dungeon generation has “infinite variations”

If it is REALLY infinite and random than it can include a HUGE a mount of crap things.

From 1 room with NOTHING to ... well ... an infinite dungeun =P

That's what makes things interesting. Games with dungeons tend to get pretty predictable. With this you literally have no idea what is coming. It could be treasure or enemies or even nothing. It's mysterious, and exactly what exploring is about.

Of course if they force you to explore every dungeon to the end, that doesn't sound good. It should be a natural thing. When someone walks into a maze, as long as they don't get lost/trapped they can leave.

Guess they didn't had the infinite imagination to design it by themselves, dungeons are gonna be as rich and varied as Dragon Age 2, I was so excited for this game but now .... :/

Random dungeon games are a completely different type of game. They sacrifice the specific catered hand-design of other types of games for an incomparable level of variety and therefore constant surprise. You never know what's around the corner.

They both have their strengths.

WOOOT? Randomly generated levels?

I'm in.

I was going to comment that random maps isn't entirely bad.

..but like before mentioned Spelunky or Diablo.. but got thinking.. I can't think of a 3D game that's done random all that great.

Doing stuff from tile sets ala Diablo or Spelunky is so much easier to make it all seem like the same thing all the time.

Real talk.

Does anyone ACTUALLY enjoy randomly generated dungeons? They're just awful. No soul, creativity, design, or intelligence. Ugh.

Edit: This sounded kind of pretentious, obviously some people above do. But WHY?!

A younger me would have been excited to hear this. Unfortunately the today version of me has had too much experience with random dungeons and they typically turn out rather bland regardless of the "variation"

I totally agree
Random generated is just random!

If the game has strong basic mechanics (and the pleasure of playing is derived from those systems rather than principally from exploring a designed environment), random dungeons enable an addictive level of variety and uncertainty. People love The Binding of Isaac, for example. Also Spelunky is a pretty great game.

Who the fuck knows how Deep Down will turn out, but I'm hoping for the best.

While I love roguelikes... stuff like this has been around forever, and there haven't been any advances or changes in procedural generation within gaming that have surprised or excited me. I can't see this being any different.

Yes. They can be great.

You know that even random dungeons still have to be designed, right? Not in each specific instance, obviously, but the design is still there. In fact, you could argue that it's even harder to pull off than traditionally designed levels. It's just the design is spread across a very large set of permutations.

To me, it's like writing a program to randomly generate stories. Sure, if you're clever enough, you can make the sentences grammatically correct, and if you're really good, you can even make the sentences string together and tell a cohesive story. But, at least until we roll singularity, it'll never come close to an actual author's work.

This game is gonna get so ugly once the F2P model is detailed. Name one game Capcom did DLC for properly.

Also, I told you guys this is the new Virtual Hydlide. Now we need to unfreeze Shaneman, Seanbaby, and Crispon to play it.

Hopefully it's tactfully implemented. I'm reminded of Skyrim's quests, which were terrible. I'd love to be surprised.

I really hope it's not some lazy algorithm for dungeon generation, like you have predetermined rooms strung together in random orders = random dungeons!! like many games have.

I think this game is more interested in the experiences telling the "story", which you could say is lazy, but people would get pretty bored (or constantly demand new dungeon content), so for a co-op dungeon crawler I don't see this as a horrible solution. Maybe I'm in the minority at this point, but it still sounds potentially fun if they can get the algorithm to make interesting stuff. There's been several 2D exploration indie titles that have done this well.

Well yes I kind of overreacted there, I have seen other games pulling this magnificently (Spelunky, Binding of Isaac) but since this is a more complex game, it won't be as easy to make engaging randomly generated content. Also I really hope the environments are not as insipid as those screenshots show...
