Deeply fundamentaly cool™ Oculus Rift CES presentation by the Verge staff

Is it me or should MS be all over this? I'd imagine this could be a massive hit of Wii like proportions and it fits Kinect perfectly.

This would be enough to get me back into first person, and could do wonders in offering more world play besides just shooting shit all day.

i actually have a really similar thing going on (not a fight but a pair of scissors when i was really little) and a rift coming in march so i'll definitely post up some impressions for the less stereoscopic of us here.

If your brain is suppressing the image of one eye due to damage or poor vision then you won't be getting any/much stereoscopy in real life, so you won't be getting it in the rift either.

You will still be able to see the benefit of all the head tracking and VR stuff.

Isn't it curious that something like this is bubbling up from homebrew/kickstarter roots?

I bet the failure of VR to deliver in the 90s made corporate R&D reluctant to pitch such ideas...

I think until kinect has far better latency it might be a bad fit for this. Hopefully with the next kinect MS does have an eye on hmds and their potential latency sensitivity, so it'll work well with any hmd they might have down the line.

Nearer term, controllers with lower latency sensors could do well as virtual hands though.

Looking at 3D they definetly shouldn't.
Instead what they should be looking at is their Surround Vision idea which I actually think is enough to engage the casual gamer and hardcore gamer and fuel next gen transition.

Won't be used effectively by all devs nor will it always be useful. However I think its a great positive idea and if that turns up at E3 with the 720 I'll be much more positive about next gen as I think it'll finally give more reasons to upgrade.

This stuff? No. If I want to look around at my game world, use the gyro in the Wii U.
This isn't that. Instead its about 3D gaming and blocking out the rest of the world.

I don't think it'd be a success at all. Mostly because people won't want to use it, its not comfortable being so immersed and disconnected from the outside world.

Not to mention it has the same issue of sitting at your TV with something on your face.
Then a big big issue. I can't use other devices whilst I play - a lot of this seems to go against current trends imo.

This is a PC centric device, niche. Not for much else and certainly not 'Wii sized' market opportunity.

Wait, did I miss something? What is being injected? Who is supporting these titles?

Homemade solutions for adapting DX9 games to run on Oculus Rift. Programmers intercept DX calls that are sent to GPU, modify them, inject them back to work flow, and produces Oculs compatible image. Durante did similar things for his legendary Dark Souls PC framerate/resolution fix.

I imagine it is, but it's not too far beyond what Unreal Engine 4 and other next gen engines will be doing. Just something to imagine for the future. Unreal Samaritan demo graphics on Oculus would be amazing even. Hell I want to play anything with this thing.

I think some people have way too high of expectations for next gen. Even among the small handful of developers who can afford AAAA development, no way is anyone coming close to touching that.

Thats cg, not realtime, and no next gen wont look like that, the gen after next gen will look like that.

You really think so? Hell even, Playstation Home has some amazing looking areas, like the interiors of the houses. That's what the video reminded me of. I can't imagine graphical powerhouse devs won't make graphics that come pretty close to that video. I think the gen after next we are basically looking at true photorealism that rivals the best of CG.

This video is within the realm of possibility for next gen, it's at least in the same ballpark.

And I don't want to turn this into a next gen graphics debate, but I posted it just to imagine the incredible graphics we are going to get in the next gen, and to be able to able to fully immerse ourselves in them with Oculus, and games that might be made specifically with Oculus in mind. I rarely play games at all these days, but this thing would bring me back. I'd buy it at a very high price if it can do half of what I want.

I dunno, Cry Engine 3 is pretty damn close already to that, and this is not even the beginning of next gen. When developers start truly harnessing the power and creating some amazing looking things, guys like Naughty Dog, etc, who knows. Especially with games that aren't open world, something like Heavy Rain, where they can pour every ounce of graphics into a small environment, it doesn't quite have to reach that video, but I expect to be sufficiently impressed nonetheless.

VR could just not effect gaming.
Imagine Real Estate Agents offer you a way to walk with VR through their real estates.
Imagine a VR Store where you see 3D Models of the Stuff you can buy, get a better feel how it will look at home than you get it with looking at a picture.
etc.

just amazing technologie :D

How am I going to fit my headset on this?

Maybe they should consider a modular rail system to make attaching other components an easy one. Would rather be able to swap out modules rather than buy a more expensive system with audio included.

Unless this already includes audio somehow.

I feel like I'm being dragged kicking and screaming back into the 90s.

You still haven't explained how looking at the game world through a tiny screen in your hand is in somehow better than looking at it through your eyes, by moving your head, at 1:1 proportions.

You'll just wear it like normal I'd say, I don't see how it would interfere with a headset.

No, it's the future of the 80s, which took a detour and is arriving 30 years late.

Something simple like a beach setting and listening to waves and/or relaxing music would be amazing after a hard day at work etc

So many possibilities.

Damn, seems so cool. I've been dreaming about fully immersive 3D VR for years, and it finally seems to be close to reality. Can't wait!

Oh its not. I just think it is something that device can be used for, and I think the negatives to VR outweigh the positives, meanwhile alternatives don't have these negatives (even if the positives are not as great).

Throw other devices in the bin, problem solved. :p

They should put that on the box :D

Spotify Locations VR App.

Choose your location, lean back and listen to music :D

In RL you are just lying on the couch but in VR you are lying on a beach chair and see the ocean before you. Graphics for this should be amazing if you only need to render one beach and nothing else :D

It will be impressive but it still wont look like that. Also Crysis 3 is a title that can be counted as a next gen title. Don't confuse high end pc titles with current gen console titles.

This is how BF3 looks like on the 360
this is crysis 3 on a pc. the leap from current gen console title to next gen console title will be that, not allot more (atleast not within the first 2 years).

So don't count high end pc graphics in the same graphical capability box as current gen console graphics

You and I are on the same wavelength Sir.

Absolutely.

If these techs take off (VR and projection techs) we're looking at entire new avenues for what we currently consider gaming/cinema/entertainment/apps.

Until it goes too far

The band goes behind your ears, so it's easy to put headphones/headset on.

would be great if they put a little cam in it in the future. So it could stream the RL around you on your screen . So you can check your smartphone etc. with Rift on, you just need to push a button to change between RL environment camera and the PC Video Input.

And you could implement Augmented Reality this way.

Indeed.

Another idea, can't see your Iphone properly through the camera? then why not connect it somehow to the VR so you can access the interface and check messages from there, sort of like how you can use the IPhone to control the youtube APP on PS3. (I know this is stretching a bit haha)

This isnt going to work as well for 3rd person games unless the perspective is designed around it. Not saying it wont work or that it wont still be good, it just wont be as effective as it will be from a first person perspective.

I can see this being fantastic for single player games, but there would be a competitive disadvantage in 3rd person multiplayer games unless you have some sort of hover camera over the player's shoulders. Does that ruin the immersion? I would love to see what an MMO would be like with these though.

I was planning to put 2 cameras on mine, just to try some stuff out. The problem is that USB cameras all seem to have terrible latency. And of course you need some lenses to get an adequate FoV out of them. Still something I want to try.

On iPhone it would be tricky because of limited api's, but on android... connected with bluetooth... as part of the steam overlay... That would be very possible and very interesting.

The character is going to turn around and say "stop following me!!!"

I wouldn't mind following around Baynonetta/Catwoman thou *cough*

My excitement had settled down a little bit since they announced the dev kits delay in November but after watching those videos it's back to 11. Can't wait for my dev kit. March can't come soon enough. This is next-gen. It needs to lose the controller though. Safest bet for now would be integration with the Razer Hydra.

I was wondering why Gaf didn't show more interest in the "official" Rift thread here. Glad to see you peasants finally saw the light. ;)

Hmmm can only drink beer from bottles with this. No more Cap'n and Cokes while gaming unless I use a straw. Out!

I know you're joking but the consumer Rift will definitely have something like a camera you can toggle to see in front of you without having to remove the headset every time. You can quote me on that.
