Def Jam: Icon screens first look

Personally I'm glad AKI aren't involved. It's time for some innovation in fighting games and at least this is trying something different rather than just playing it safe.

EA made a horrible decision taking this series from AKI. The reason behind the developer change was already ridiculous (they thought it was weird for rappers to be fighting in underground fight rings using wrestling moves). I doubt anyone who actually played these games even care about this. All that mattered was that the gameplay was solid. Even if this game turns out to be good, it won't be the Def Jam/AKI Wrestling games that most enjoyed.

From the video, at least, it is hard to see the innovation you speak of.

Okay after seeing the video I take it back. This game looks great and fun as hell. The marks on the guy's faces look great and the fire and smoke stuff looks cool as hell too.

I take it back. This game might be a great game.

The early videos don't show the gameplay in any great depth. The combining of moves and special attacks with the music sounds very innovative.

The fire looks abso****inglutely terrible

You gotta see this game in motion. I just watched some footage of it on Gamespot's CES Tour Day 1 and it looked RIDICULOUS.

And guys, when JB1 says ridiculous he means it in a good way. ;)

actually it doesn't look too bad, at least from the gametrailers video anyway. I don't normally like fighting games so this is a surprise to me.

What does that mean?
I'm speakin in terms of graphics, the night/sepia settings bears much resemblance duncha think? And I suppose where actual gameplay's concerned, we all know its not gonna be comprehensive (style over substance...worked for the NFS series, no different for Defjam)

I wouldn't compare the two at all.. because a few levels have neon lights? sounds like a bit of a stretch.

Kudo Tsunoda is an oddball, but he seems to know his fighting games. Fight Night was superb and with him at the helm I expect good things.

I just watched the PS3 Gamers Day Demonstration on gametrailers. Ugh. I really don't like the direction they're taking the series (beat driven animated environments, "turn-table" controls, etc).

Well I wasn't going as far as saying the core fighting engine's gonna suck, but then again, FNR3's a simulation; we know this isn't. As it is right now, I like how the game's visual style is prominent and that danceclub level fits in with the other harsh lighting/high contrast settings I've mentioned (night/sepia...also evident in the last couple NFS games)

Yeah that color tone is in lots of EA games now. It's in Need for Speed, Black, Burnout, Fight Night, and now Def jam Icon.

Maaaaaaaaan where the hell are the good rappers ( aka method man ) ????

Why do I see this fat guy from Romeo must die in those screens when I should be seeing method man beating up 50'cents lame ass?

Oh shit this has Young Jeezy in it. I'll have to get it now. My birthday presents are now all but chosen. MLB 2k7 and this.

ive never played any of these

will it make me feel black? that might be worth the money

WTF are you talking about? Redman is in the first picture.

when are they going to make one of these with cheesy 80's hair-metal icons? That would be awesome:

Diamond David Lee Roth vs. David "The Face" Coverdale!

The Nelson Twins vs. Dee Snider!

Maybe once this rap trend starts to die down... :D

what is their strength and abilities based on anyways? record sells? street cred?

How good you play! You have to build up your character!:D

Seriously, I bit the first time. Take that nonsense elsewhere please:D

Jeezy's finishing move has to be called the Snowman, and as he does it, he needs to Snowman Bitch! Did I st-st-studder!? The world would be right then.

EA had an event today and showed off the game, though it's mysteriously the only game that doesn't have a listed embargo. I'll find out tomorrow if/when we can talk about it, but I don't think it's breaking any rules to say that I had already reserved myself to thinking that this would a be piss-poor sub-AKI-level effort with a gimmick at the fore. After spending a bit with the game, I'm now fairly sure it's going to kick all kinds of ass. And it looks better (at least to me) than what you see in those screens.

Man, talk about doing a 180 on a game. I think it probably is one of those "gotta play it to get it" kind of experiences, but yeah, there's some seriously cool stuff they're doing with that whole music = gameplay thing. I think a lot of folks are going to be surprised.

I think this is just a 2d game now, which means it won't be 4 player.. They f'cked up yo. The reason why people liked the game was because it was a wrestling game... :(

His character in The Shield was incredible, only to be outdone by Forest Whitaker the next season. Can't wait for the new season.

The character model is incredible. If there were a real picture of Anthony Anderson, I doubt as many people would be able to identify him."
