Del Toro's next project announced - Haunted Mansion

I sure wish Del Toro would put a little time into that Saturn and the End of Days project instead of attaching himself to two dozen adaptations and licensed nonsense.

Screw all the haters in this thread.

Del Toro, making a dark movie, based on one of the most beloved Disney rides. It's going to be wild and awesome. I'm so excited.

Sure, Hobbit would be better, but if we get Peter Jackson directing that, then it's win-win, right?

At the Mountains of Madness will be his next project... At least I hope so.

He has already stated that it is pretty much impossible to get a studio to sign on for it

Most studios find security in funding those types of projects. Guillermo said that he'd like to do At the Mountains of Madness, but at the moment it's hard to find a studio that would fund an "R-rated, tentpole movie with a tough ending, with no love story". I'm sure most of his proposed projects are on the same boat.

Also in that same interview Guillermo said that he is stuck at page 25 of the script for Saturn and the End of Days and can't get past it. He got stuck on page 15 for Pan's Labyrinth for about a year and a half. :P

Don't like Del Toro, so this is great news for me. Two things I dont care for makes skipping the movie easy.

How come there's never been a movie about the Tower of Terror (which I remember correctly was based on a Twilight Zone episode) ride?

He dropped the Hobbit for this?
No, he dropped waiting for MGM to straighten out its finances to make this.

At any rate, every time he announces yet another project that isn't At the Mountains of Madness I am disappointed.

How long will I have to wait?

That's what I was referencing.

Del Toro does a lot of bitching about how obnoxious it is to work under the studio system, but he just keeps signing big deals with every studio in town instead of doing another lower budgeted original movie with independent financing. He's his own worst enemy.

I agree with you, I think it can be fantastic.
People really need to get the Eddie Murphy fiasco out of their head.

Looking forward to it. Good to see that Del Toro understands that kids have to have the shit scared out of them too many modern 'family' films shirk from their responsibilities to scare them properly.

I'm not sure he'll make anything as good as Pan's Labyrinth and The Devil's Backbone in a long, long time. :(
Ew, that movie sucked. Just a muddled mess of subplots that go nowhere and a ton of irrelevant supernatural tangents.

Sounds pretty interesting actually...

The thing I wonder is how Disney is gonna react to this, it seems kind of risky for Disney to license out one of their most beloved attractions for a PG-13 horror movie, but I guess they know what they're doing...

Crappy movie needs crappy director. Humorous he dropped out of the Hobbit only to get this. :lol

Why do people act like he dropped out of the hobbit so easily?
The Hobbit is tied up in limbo and will be for the next year or maybe longer.
Hell he will probably make two or three movies before the Hobbit is even green lit.
I know the internet is full of idealists who would never think about the need of money coming in and all and would only focus on the highest of art, but I am sure the man wants to keep money coming in to finance future projects and to build ties that could help down the line.

I hope he's allowed to make a genuinely frightening movie. I'd love to see a fun-but-terrifying ghost story from him.
Disney... That's all you need to know about this sorry misadventure.

I bet half a crown Hobbit will be released before 2014.

Pre-Pirates Disney I would have agreed with you.
Post Pirates, I think that it needs to be given a chance.

I was listening to an NPR interview from a former film exec who said he threatened resign if Braveheart wasn't green lighted, same with Fight Club. Del Toro needs to make Dark Knight box office numbers before anyone would let him make In The Mountains of Madness.

It's a very different company than it was even 2 years ago. He'll probably even work with some Pixar guys.
Nothing has changed, this is the same company who brought Miramax to its knees. greenlit shit tons of crappy PG movies this very same year and has managed to stay a float only because of Pirates, Pixar, and Hannah fucking Montana.

Exactly.
The Hobbit definitely could have been "it", hopefully there will be something.

De Toro is a big fan of the horror genre, so why shouldn't he jump at the chance at making one that will get a good budget and marketing push by disney?

He comes across as someone who loves filmmaking rather than sitting on his arse all day for the next 2 years.

best post of the thread right here

Oh Dan, when the planets align every once in a while, your words and my thoughts synch up and everything becomes this euphoric haze that I can only see as something beautiful.

The Devil's Backbone is one of the most overrated films I've ever seen. Nice setup, no payoff. Allegorically it has merit, yet its FAR less subtle in its Franco musings than Pan's Labyrinth - which, once released, made Backbone completely irrelevent.

I'm not sure how I feel about this - I really do wish the Hobbit hadn't run into so many troubles so del Toro could have stayed on. At least the film should be visually creative.

Are you hitting on me?

I can't imagine this being a box office success, once parents find out that it's not kid friendly they'll steer clear of it, meanwhile horror fans not in the know will also steer away from it. The best I can see this doing is as a niche title that every once in awhile get's brought out as "that crazy Disney slasher"...

Sounds great. The Haunted Mansion has always been my favorite Disney ride and I can't wait to see what Del Toro does with a movie adaption, I'm sure it will be much better then the last movie.
