This is perfect for me, had to pay a lot for their wifi just to send a couple of messages during the last New Year's eve.

I'm kind of iffy on things like this. Similar to unlimited data for netflix on Tmobile or whatever, this is a clear violation of net neutrality. Hopefully the next administration can prevent things like this in the future.

Isn't it different since they are not an ISP and are a reseller?

It's like saying your hotel room shouldn't block ports because of net neutrality

wonder how they're gonna prevent photo transfer via iMessage since the contents of the images are encrypted...

They are more or less your ISP on the flight. I don't think blocking ports is the same as giving preferential treatment to certain websites.

Size of the message should make it pretty obvious whether it contains an image or just text.

Yep. It will likely be size based.

To me this sounds like it's funded by Facebook and Apple since their services are covered. I don't see how that's a violation.

curious how they are able to block files being all three services are end to end encrypted.. just based on packet size?

Alaska already does this.

protip: they actually don't prevent you from getting on the rest of the regular internet, it's basically the "free" internet is so throttled that you pretty much can ONLY use messaging services. sending images takes so long it'll time out, but they can't actually block it, since the connection is secure.

I was able to browse around the rest of the internet without paying, but only text heavy sites like Reddit or forums were viable. speed is roughly equivalent to browsing the internet on 2G.

You also have to re-authorize via the portal once in a while

hotels often just let you access their web site for free on their internet connection.

Not sure how this is much different. The airplane company is hooking up with an actual ISP that provides the satellite internet, and you aren't living in the airplane, it's only temporary.

Going to an Internet cafe, using a hotel wifi, using internet on an airplane, among other things are all resellers they cannot qualify as "ISPs"

Had his free recently on a Virgin Atlantic flight (747 Manchester - Orlando) which Delta code share.

It was great actually, it said it wouldn't work for pictures but we sent a few successfully via whatsapp and iMessage

T-Mo also allows regular SMS, I believe, with WiFi calling enabled.
