Dementium: The Ward E3 Preview

He's a pretty swell guy in my books anyway.

Control and gunplay in Dementium uses the touchscreen as a mouse button, and worked really well. When you need to act and aim, the touchscreen works as your cursor, but the game is also filled with puzzles, most of which are simply interacted with via a context-sensitive action button at the top of the screen. At the corners of the screen are access to a map and your notepad. The notepad is a nice addition, as it uses the Nintendo DS screen (like Hotel Dusk) to allow you to write down passcodes and game notes important for puzzles. (You can also doodle and wipe it off later with an eraser.) The game's story will evolve with communication with NPCs (including possibly the woman whisked away by the evil It in the beginning of the game.)

Nice impressions. I've been looking for impressions about this game since it was announced. Nice to read these from IGN.

Four or Five bosses. Six to eight enemies classes. Touchscreen puzzles and notepad usage. Even has some outdoor levels. This game should be on more peoples wishlists.

Wow. Looks and sounds quite atmospheric. The graphics are pretty decent, and it looks to run at a very smooth clip! On my radar, all of a sudden.

Eh, the way those enemies die is pretty lame.

Neat. Headshots against those zombies aren't the way to go... but shoot that thing in that torso-mouth and bam, goes down in one hit.

Just a few nitpicks
-heartbeat should only sound noticeable when player is near dead or has just fought enemies.
-flashlight should be on screen as long as you don't have a two handed weapon.
-bodies shouldn't vanish into thin air after dead.( most likely too many bodies slows the game down)

I'm still very interested in how this games turns out, been that way since before they had a publisher.

1) I like it the way it is. In the video labeled "creepy" with the bloody hospital the heartbeat is pretty soft but kinda gives you that alone feeling. You know, it was so quiet i was left with the beating of my own heart.

2) Yeah, well... Maybe he's only got one arm? Or the other arm is holding all his other stuff. (actually i hope they explain the lack both gun and flashlight, it's pretty lame.)

3) Well I don't see how this is any worse as the body laying on the ground for a little while then fading away.

I'll keep an eye out, but survival horror is the only genre I'm pretty graphic whorish in, and I'm still not convinced the genre can have the same effect on a handheld (though I'm still getting silent hill: origins for the PSP). If SH can do it for me, maybe I'll give this one a chance too.

I will say they put in a good effort with the atmosphere. I especially like dirt around the edges of the screen.

The flashlight mechanic actually works/looks awesome in the IGN video previews. The screen shoots make it look like a stenciled overlay but it's actually very nicely implemented in action where distant objects will be lit by the flashlight but fade into blackness when you pan away. The lighting mechanic also takes into account distance of object from the flashlight. It's a nice hook for a game.

I like the adventeruing aspect of it as its very atmospheric, and as long as it doesn't turn into a pure FPS style game (which I don't think it is) then I'm cool with it. Waiting for reviews to see if its worth picking up.

Definetely on my most anticipated list. Very promising game

Plus horror games are hard to come by these days.
