Demo: The Bourne Conspiracy on Xbox Live

Pakman said:
Haha that was quick. Thanks guys.

NO, it isn't. The game has a few scenes interjected from Identity, but the game is called Bourne CONSPIRACY. It takes place before the books. Not to mention there isn't even a book.

P.S. Is the demo out in the U.S. for PS3 yet?

there is no Carlos. there is no massive mission to Hong Kong to find the assassin who's using Bourne's identity. there is no level set in a Russian replica of an american town used to train spies.

Can't find the picture to save my life, but I'm pretty sure that there is a Hong Kong setting in the game.

I thought the demo was pretty bad. The first chase part wasnt bad, but the hand to hand combat was boring and I expected the gunplay to be fun, but it wasnt.

The game would be pretty solid if it wasn't for 2 things:

1) The fighting, WHICH HAPPENS A LOT, is not fun at all. It's a complete chore and boring as hell.

2) The constant cutting back and forth from gameplay to cutscenes, which I guess is their big thing, is not actually a good thing. It's annoying to be constantly getting taken out of control and the camera moves around so much it's disorientating.

Other little flaws:
-Hitting Y to see your next objective point when there are enemies on screen flips the camera at them, which is stupid if you are running from them and towards your objective.

-The driving was...yeah. Needs some weight to the cars.

Graphics were solid and running around is fun, but those things made it pretty weak. Definitely won't be buying this for any price.

Is there a lot of QTEs?

Do the shooting takedowns actually get in the way of the gunplay?

Is the pace of the hand-to-hand fighting drag things down too much?

this especially...it doesn't even exist...you just mash X until the next quick-cut takedown sequence opportunity comes up

Light attack's X, Heavy attack's Y, block is A, take down is B. Basically you string combos with X and Y and block with A until you've built up enough energy to do a take down, which instantly takes out anybody but a boss.

And yes, there are QTEs everywhere. Everywhere. They even QTEd shifting gears on the car.

I'm sorry but did I read that correctly? How the FUCK do you QTE a gear shift? WHY the FUCK would you QTE a gear shift? Are they out of their fucking minds?

It's too bad I can't download it right now to try it out but I don't have xbl gold.

These impressions have really killed my hype. I had so much hope for this game (loved the movies) but it doesn't sound too great. I really need to try the demo when they release on PSN.

This has been said.........but they have taken QTEs in a obnoxious new direction. They've entered a brave new age of fail.

The driving has QTE's at checkpoint stages.

The QTE takedown made me a bit skeptical but QTE gear shift is like whoa.

I don't know what to think about the demo. I enjoyed the first portion of the demo, but i find the close quarters combat to be really off. What REALLY infuriated me about the demo was that you're forced into close quarters fights while there are 2 other enemies shooting at you. WTF?

I just won't play games that rely on QTEs this heavily. It is possibly the worst game mechanic in existence. Insta-fail b/c I don't press the Y button in time to get under a gate? Fuck right off High Moon. Go make a Space Ace game.

I get a QTE for a stunt crash or something (Like the tunnel in Surpemacy) but to gear a shift?

That's just stupid. Still waiting for the demo to be available though.

Shit. Game for me!

I know Gaf will stone me for this but... I LOVE QTE's! ANYTIME, EVERYWHERE!

I enjoyed the demo. Fights seemed long on Agent/Assassin but on Trainee it actually felt about right (well at least on par with what Bourne does in the movies). A pity it seems to be following the movies and not the novels.

I liked it personally. Gave a sense of urgency.

Wow, this was horrible. Where was the gameplay exactly? Incredibly simplistic combat, obnoxious cut scenes before every single action. Why even make me run down a hallway when you could just show Bourne sprinting from place to place?

This isn't a game--it's a barely interactive movie. Not interested in the slightest.

The animation and graphics were nice though, but there's no game there.

pretty much sums it up...and for what it's worth, I tried it again last night and yeah, my opinion didn't change...

I got pissed at the fight on the roof with the snipers. The guy would block every movie I threw at him and then lay into me with a combo. I'd block some of them, but would still get killed within seconds. I said to hell with it and deleted it off my HDD. The game has promise, but the blocking just irritated me.

Man, you guys are way to harsh on this demo. It was a fun blast. Nothing "blow your panties out of the water amazing" but fun and good... awww shit, forgot this is GAF. If its not genre defying then its crap...:lol

If the blocking is fixed for the retail version, this one is a winner.

You guys have any other alternatives to the combat when it comes to the controls? The fighting style is pretty fast, and it'd be hard to take on multiple enemies any other way.

Only thing I didn't like was the kicking. Seemed to hard to pull off. Or should I say too slow. Loved how smooth the framerate was.

Anyone else have issues w/ the shooting mechanics? I'd get hit a lot while hiding behind cover (wtf?), and sometimes I'd have my reticle over an enemy behind cover (it turns red), shoot a bunch, and nothing. It was almost as if the game was saying "nope, he's behind cover you can't shoot him". Why do the enemies get that bonus and not me?

I game on a monitor and I was really impressed by the look of the environment during the chase.

In other news, I just saw the commercial on ESPNEWS. The marketed the ability to download the demo. I thought that was cool. Wonder if it becomes a trend.

June 3rd. Maybe I'll be there

Just finished playing the demo myself on my other GT and I must say I was surprised at how well made it is. I had my doubts at first when I saw its was a UE3 Game but now I very much looking forward to its release.

My only concerns are... The cover system is similar to Gears (something we have very rarely seen these days *cough* *cough*) Its the fact its very sketchy I had times where I couldnt lock onto a wall or I stood up for no reason. Camera is also annoying in some places. And the driving section! Lets just say its not gonna be racing game any time soon, then again it wasn't their main concerntration.

Overall I enjoyed it - extra praise for actually being a rather lengthy demo, three sections to play nice! :D

Ugh this game is on rails to such a high degree that it's ridiculous. They've tried to follow the movie (at least in the first mission) down to scenes being the exact same frame by frame. The player really has no control at all and the QTEs are extremely obnoxious. I died instantly three times during the first stage because my trigger finger wasn't fast enough.

This is the problem with video games using movie licenses. It restricts them horribly. I realize that this game is based on the book, but you can tell that they've based some of it on the movie (punching the guy on the stairs in the first stage for example) and they've copied the frantic style from the movies.

I'll quote a famous, controversial line here and say that this game, or at least what the demo shows of this game, really feels like a misuse of the medium. It's like watching the movie, but randomly dieing every once and a while because you didn't hit a button fast enough.

Well other games of its caliber are really on rails to an extent. Look at Stranglehold or first person shooters like Prey. Doesn't mean there not good. While the game has a ton of quick time events which people will either love or hate, the demo was hand holding mostly but its a demo, I don't think it will be that way in the full game. I could be wrong and eat crow though.

I think the fighting mechanics are interesting and wouldn't be surprised if in the full game you learn more moves and combos. The takesdowns are always very grin inducing with the sound of a mans face slamming into a desk or wall.

The shooting mechanics seem solid with a decent cover system. The takesdowns in this mode remind me of Stranglehold.

The driving, while very basic feeling, might offer some action packed movie moments... but I doubt there are too many of these and will be just good "break up the formula" levels to the rest of the game.

I don't know if its a buy yet, but I definetly have my eye on it. Its done more justice me actually playing the game then seeing the videos of it.

"Press and Hold X or Y to do a strong kick attack. Beware you are vulnerable during this"

*game proceeds to give you an enemy that never pauses in his attacks*

Really? You thought that's how you'd tutorial that? *sobs in hands* You just can't find good help these days.

Neither of these are on rails anywhere the extent of this demo. This might as well have Bourne's mom leading him by the hand the whole time saying, 'now this is where you run, here's a little qte game, now punch this bad man in the face.' It's slightly more interactive than Dragon's Lair.

In a way, I'd compare this to Stranglehold... where the "special moves" are cool to look at for a while but would get tiring after a long time.
The QTEs are just idiotic though. Can't say I always agree with Itigaki, but QTEs are really lazy game design to force interactivity into the game. The fact that they're instant fail makes them that much more annoying... at least the Heavenly Sword/God of War QTEs are totally punishing.
The fighting is pretty awkward as well... whereas in the movie Bourne can take out a group of guys in a few seconds, here you spend time punching each guy one at a time until you can charge up your meter.

Also, as Shawn Elliot likes to bring up from time to time, the bosses are arbitrarily given more health. It makes no sense that random soldier Bob can be taken down very easily but a guy with a unique character model suddenly is impervious to all forms of harm. Maybe it would make sense if you're fighting another agent or whatever, but I get the feeling that every boss encounter will look exactly the same.

But, the takedowns, like the Stranglehold special movies, do look nice. If the game was short, like maybe 6-8 hours, it'd be perfect. Long enough to see all the animations, short enough not to get tired with the fighting mechanics and constant QTEs.
Sadly, I bet they'll go with the 10-15 hour route that most games aim for, and that's unfortunate.

Sadly, I'll probably still pick it up. The presentation is fairly nice and I'm such a fan of the movies that I got a kick out of seeing the movie scenes put into the game. Too bad they didn't even bother trying to get Potente... but I guess it doesn't matter since they didn't get Damon anyway. I also like that they used Powell's music. Why re-invent the wheel there? It'd be like a Star Wars game not using the theme song during the credits.

Just played this today, and I actually had a lot of fun with it (the first two levels, but not the driving level).

I can understand why people didn't like the demo due to the QTE's, but it actually made the game more exciting for me.
