Demon's Souls is kicking my ASS

I just started this game this weekend since I had it from PS+. I am enjoying it so far, and I wasn't having trouble with the game at all. I only died a few times to a red eyed knight before taking him out, but that was the only area I even came close to dying in. Then last night I got up to a giant spider boss and he kicked my ass...multiple times. Upon doing so he erased about two hours of soul collecting, and I decided to put the game down for a few days. I am probably going to give it another go today, but I am going to have to look up some strats or something for that boss, because that fight was insane.
Keep close to the spider, guard its arm swipes, and attack it after it body slams. Make sure to stay out of body slam range or else you'll be webbed. When it begins shaking and glowing, run to the back of the tunnel. Roll forward through the web attacks; the first few frames of a roll are invincible, so you can avoid getting webbed and then getting obliterated by the spider's fireball attack.

If you want to practice rolling, the fat officials' fireballs and the crossbowmen's bolts both can be dodged by rolling forward through the projectile. Just make sure you do it at the last second.

I remember using that one for drops, is it one of the top tier one handers in terms of damage? I already have all the achievements so I'm probably not gonna be grinding for drops that much this time around.
It's pretty awful actually. It's like a weaker, unbuffable kilij.

Stonefang is largely deserted. I found it quite relaxing actually (in hindsight).

Yeah that's why its a good level to do. There aren't a lot of really tough enemies to face. Flamelurker can be a pain if he keeps spamming the fire aoe move he has, but he's not too hard to kill and you get a ton of upgrade stones from the miners and a fire weapon which is pretty good if upgraded. That Dragon longsword +5 has saved my ass quite a few times, especially in 4-2.

You know, I played a little Dark Souls last night on the PC because for $7.50, why the hell not, right? I already owned and played on PS3, but PC is prettier and faster, etc.

It's amazing that despite how similar Demon's and Dark Souls are mechanically, they really are very different! Dark Souls is so much more open, but yet easier to progress through. Bonfires make it simple to retain progress, whereas in Demon's Souls you always feel like you're fucked. Like, "Dammit, I better bank these souls into some upgrades right the hell now or I know I'm gonna lose 'em!!!"

It's cool. Dark Souls might kinda be Demon's Souls on E-Z mode, but that's not necessarily a bad thing either. Both are cool in their own way.

I dont understand the white soul tendency at all. I checked the wiki and it clearly shows that if one of those altars on the soul tendency status has a light your world is white. However nothing changes like it should. All of the levels are lit on the status thing. I really want to unlock everything but this makes things a lot more difficult.

Sounds like you're close to, but not quite at 100% white tendency. The server tendency is usually around ~%90 white for all worlds, and every time you log in, your world tendency will shift towards the server tendency.

Typically, logging in once and defeating a single boss will be enough to reach pure white in a world. However, the changes don't take effect until you go back to the nexus and return to the world. Also, if you quit while you have pure tendency, when you log back in again you will probably lose it by shifting towards the server tendency.

Welcome to the wonderful world of world tendency!

So the best would be to be offline then kill the last boss of Boleria? I have killed most of the bosses except that one.

Yeah, it's easier to manage world tendency offline since you don't have to worry about the server messing things up. If Boletarian Palace is nearly pure white, then killing one more boss will definitely get you there.

Thanks I will give that a try once I go after the boss. I hope things will finally change afterwards.

Stupid world tendency system. Now I could face finally executioner miranda just by killing the green dragon (while playing off line). This means it is way too difficult for me to actually change the world tendency in Tower of Latria now since I have already killed all the bosses there (or optional ones). If only I knew this before playing on the serves every time!
At least I know what to do on new game plus next time but it is annoying as I wanted to free the prisoner so much.

are servers still up? I think so? Anyway, if yes just go co-op and it gets much easier.

Yea there are a ridiculous amount of people playing it feels like, just got the game and I see soooo many phantoms/ blood stains

Probably cause it was free on PS+ not too long ago

Gahhhhh fuck that False King!!!! I can't even take him out using the super cheap method. I finally thought I got into a good groove with his attacks but then he sucked a level out of me and insta kill :(

He is a lot easier than most bosses I realized since he is actually slow. Keep moving at all times and wait for an opening after he is done with his attacks and you get plenty of them.

Phalanx is way too easy this time around than the first time. My first encounter with him was probably the worst boss encounter in the game since I could barely damage him and had to play hide and seek behind the pillars.

I never understood how you invite players into your game. Only happened due to some blue soul sign being on a ground at random.

hahhahahaha

Just started playing yesterday and was about to throw my controller through the window last night. Finally clicked today and started gaining some traction.

Damn fine game.

Refined old skool. Like a pinot grigio wine.

I'll probably (finally) finish the game this week.
I only have the False King left to beat, which I tried once and he kicked my butt. :P
I guess there's some sort of end game stuff, too.

I'm thinking about doing an NG+ run, but I'm not really sure how to face it.
I have a Royalty magic-oriented build.
I carry a Crescent Falchion +3, some shield that recovers my HP, the Silver Catalyst and a Kris Blade to buff my magic attacks.
I'm also still wearing the same armor I started the game with.

I guess there's no uber good weapon that is a must to get, is it?
All weapons can be "equally" good, and choosing one is a matter of what suits best your play style/character.
If I start a NG+, should I keep on upgrading my Crescent Falchion, or can/should I try to upgrade other stuff to see if they are good? Morrigan Targaryen suggested a few pages back a Claymore, and I'm curious about it. But right now my Falchion is so much better than any other weapon I have that switching is not an option.

I've upgraded my shield twice, using Colorless Demon Souls, but they are really scarce and haven't found more.

Also, is it normal I'm still rocking the armor I started with?

The last boss I beat was the one from 5-3.
Is there a safe way to go through that swamp to get the treasures without getting the plague?

Is the Insanity Catalyst worth it?
I used the Demon Soul to upgrade the Silver Catalyst it to get some spell, if I remember correctly, but maybe I could use it in the next run. I read it halves the MP, which is not very cool.

I would litterally kill for a next-gen Demon's Souls sequel by Miyazaki.

There's something about the setting of Demon's that's even more depressing and brooding than Dark imho. Imagine a sequel with the open-ended , Metroidvania structure of Dark Souls series... Tears of pain should be had.

I still don't understand how anyone can like world and character tendency when it's manipulated by the servers every damn time you boot the game up in its intended mode. It might be nearly white in USA, but in Europe it's smack bang in the middle. So every time you log on you're back to square one. I feel like I say this every time, but the way it is handled locks things away until you find a Wiki with ways to cheap your way there. At least dark world tendency is easy enough to bring about.

I'd love to have played this and seen people available to summon, but in my entire time played I saw one summon sign, and it was in 1-2. Admittedly, I haven't tried since it's been on PS+.

I finished Dark Souls around January and loved the everliving shit out of it, and snagged a new copy of Demon's Souls off Amazon shortly afterward. Haven't gotten to it though because I was busy playing a ton of other games for months afterwards, but I'm trying to rectify that right now as I started a new file yesterday and hope to get it done before summer's end. In terms of progess I just got finished talking to the monumental and a lot more of the game has opened up, this is about as far as I got when I originally started before deciding to start fresh.

Getting pure black world tendency is way too hard on American servers. :(

And I need pure black world tendency to farm.

My friend recently let me borrow his ps3!

I just had to try this game out!
I loved every minute of it but gave up at the last boss!

Great game!
Hate that last boss tho,

Seriously, just depresses me, as I really want a Demon's Souls sequel right now!

I could really do with playing that. I just don't like the bonfire system in Dark Souls. :(

Despite almost unlimited health and mana, I feel like demon's souls was better just because of the atmosphere. Something about coming back to the nexus and seeing everybody just chillin.

which one?
Something tells me he's going to have to consider that question carefully.

Yeah the Nexus is so special. Especially because it was such a safe place. It was like the one place in the world you felt safe. (allowing them to play on that concept).

Uhh, that game, not even a sequel will be as good. I wish I could play it fresh again.

Also, it's just how the stones worked, was better than Dark Souls' open world.

Aaauuugggh, nearly done with Stonefang Tunnel for the moment but I go through a fog gate and get pelted with fireballs by some stupid spider at the other end of a long tunnel.

This. I just love the Nexus and how everyones just resting there. It just feels like your at home and I also liked the cast of characters. Even Yurt was somewhat a badass unlike his pathetic counterpart (though they were both very easy).

Another thing I hated in Dark Souls was the lack of black phantoms. There were so many in Demons souls and they were some of the hardest fights in the game as they fought like you did: dodged, healed etc.

Furthermore there were some weapons/armour that were truly rare in Demons souls, usually due to PB/PW tendency events. My memory's not good, but the hardest thing you need to do to get rare weapons in Dark Souls is cut of a dragons tail or join a covenant.

yeah, Kalameet tail.

I think I may have played this game wrong, never fully warmed up to it.

Picked it up late 2010, let it gather dust.

Put it in the console for the first time late 2012, beat 1-1, got bored with it.

Picked it up again early this year, got to the final boss but at this time I was just ok-meh with the game, so I just decided that the NG+ playthrough would be the last, duped stuff/got all the trophies, and shelved the game. Killed all my desire to get Dark Souls PTD and all hype for DkS2.

For what it's worth, I chose to play with a pew pew Soul Ray/Fireball mage, never went online, and glanced at a quick chapter guide/outline after every beating every boss. I think I still owe the game another playthrough using a melee build this time, just not feeling it right now (or anytime soon). Maybe in a year or so, so I would forget most things I know about the game. It's one of those games where to a certain extent, prior knowledge dilutes some parts of the experience.

What so hard about that? He even lays his tail down for you for a good amount of time and what you need to like 2-3 hits with a buffed weapon and its gone. What I am trying to say is From should make some weapons or armour truly rare.

it not, but it did took me several hours until I understood that you have be under his tail for him to slam it. It was much harder farming for that pure bladestone.

Finished 1-1 and 2-1, trying 3-1 at the moment and getting the shit beaten out of me by giant balls firing lasers at me and these stupid octopus wizards. Tower of Latria seriously is creeping me out and putting me on edge.

oh god I fucking hate those guy. Though you should of just went to 4-1 instead. It much easier than 2-1 or 3-1. Just need a blunt weapon or soul ray.

The entirety of 3 is horrifying, but it leads up to one of the best boss battle moments in the history of gaming. Granted, the boss for me was
some poor guy with a rapier
, but man that moment is magic

I've been a hardcore RPG fan, both Western and Japanese since 1987. And I'd like to report that IMHO neither Demon's Souls nor Dark Souls are worth the aggravation.

On the other hand, Skyrim is way too easy. Why these developers can't find proper balance is beyond me.

Anyway, I would rather play Angband with no backup save file than touch Demon's/Dark Souls again despite loving the universe, atmopshere, and level design.

Anti-Magic field turned Tower of Latria into a cakewalk. Unless you're not careful enough with the fucking rays and getting shot outside the field, then it's OHKO time. ):

About Dark Souls. I sort of lost the drive to play it after entering Tomb of the Giants. Didn't feel like playing it anymore and even gave Demon's Soul another run.

Thought of starting over, but the thought of going through Anor Londo, the Sewers, The Library and all of that...just bummed me out. I didn't find it challenging or fun, it was just overly stupid and thinking it back, I don't think I enjoyed it that much. :/

Plus, fucking PvP.

yeah, Dark soul doesn't excited me as much as demon soul. And yeah didn't like how they limited the spell. But I did like how open world it was.

How do you love the level design and hate the game because it is too hard?

I found 4-1 to be the hardest X-1 level when I first started. I actually beat both 2-1 and 3-1 before trying out 4-1. I felt like I really got the hang of the combat, then I entered 4-1 and literally got rolled-up on. Those skeletons were terrifying with my weak gear and low stamina. If I got spotted by 2 skeletons it was GG. Then when I finally got past them, I got skewered by a random spear out of the sky. I feared the fuck out of that level when I first played it.

I got halfway through 3-1 and decided to retreat for the moment, getting my ass kicked without proper range attacks since I'm mostly a melee character. (Got better equipment though for when I try again)

Finished 1-2 in the meantime, freaked when I saw what I was up against with the
Tower Knight
but the battle wasn't too bad in retrospect. Not sure where to go next, 3-1 is my best guess. 2-2 has a lot of enemies that just wont die for me due to absurd defense, 4-1 has the skeletons which wont stop killing me, and 5-1 had me running around in a Blighttown-esque area getting hit with status ailments.
