Demon's Souls US servers will stay alive

ATLUS said today it's extending the North American online servers for Demon's souls. The game was originally going offline at the end of this month. No specific time table has been set, but ATLUS said the servers will be left on for the "foreseeable future."

"We're incredibly excited to be able to announce that the Demon's Souls online experience will persist for a while longer," stated Tim Pivnicny, Vice President of Marketing and Sales. "While it originally seemed as though it would be unfeasible for us to continue to sustain the servers, a number of developments have made it possible for us to continue to invest in and support our fans as they have continued to invest in and support us and Demon's Souls.

"For all the gamers who have yet to discover the game's amazing online experience, we're happy to say you can still log on and find out why Demon's Souls is still regarded by many as one of the finest games of all time."

ATLUS won't rule out the possibility of future extensions of the North American servers, provided user activity and interest remain constant, the publisher said.

just remembered this a few days ago, was going to spend part of this weekend playing to celebrate the end.

THE REAL DEMON'S SOULS NEVER STOPS.
 
What a twist. Admittedly, I haven't played Demon's Souls in awhile, but it was still sad to hear news of the servers shutting down. It's most definitely worth playing offline, but it wouldn't be quite the same without bloodstains, invasions and phantoms.

Off topic but perhaps a good place to ask. Never played a Souls games. What's best to start with or at least is more forgiving. Demon Souls or Dark Souls?
 
Oh my god, Atlus. Stop pulling at my heart. There aren't enough commendations to give you guys for keeping this baby alive for this long. If there's anyone on gaf who hasn't played Demon's Souls, DO IT NOW. It shouldn't be more than like $15 by now.

Ehh. I'd go with Dark souls. I have friends who never made it past 1-1 in Demon's and swore off the series entirely. Just don't go human until you're ready to be invaded. But personally I think Demon's is the better game.

I just bought a PS3 and this game earlier this month, and was really bummed out when I got that message about the server. This is pretty much the sweetest gaming news I've heard in a long time.

Actually I have to double check that. I might be around 6 or 7. I know I upgraded the Winged Spear a bit and I had to level up to be able to use that.

Well the weapon I'm using is pretty much killing everything in 1-2 hits and I'm a Dark Souls vet so I kind of know what I'm doing. But I think Flamelurker just might be too much to handle. I started as that templar knight class so I don't have any magic and I don't have the fire absorbing shield.

Also why does this feel like a troll by Atlus to get more people into the servers? I played this last month simply because I thought they were shutting it down. :|

I'd say do Demon's first. Dark Souls is an improved game in many, many ways, but I cannot stress enough that Demon's Souls should not be missed.

Playing the other way around might make you miss some Dark Souls features. Also, Demon's has a certain charm I feel is missing from Dark.

Why would they bother? They don't make money off people actually playing the game, and doubt ppl are going to buy the game when it's about to shut down.

If you stand behind the big bone to the right of the entrance and use a spear or a bow, you can hit and kill him as he glitches on the bone trying to come to you.

Edit: You're WAY underleveled. SL 4? Seriously? A knight starts at SL6 ffs.

Flamelurker at low SL is fun, I think i beat him at 11 but not as low as you are. Either way you should be good with the crescent falchion from 4-1 and just dodging all of his attacks, and throw on a ring of flame resistance. That character was also templar knight, wound up making the halberd a dragon halberd and it's powerful enough for anything in the game (not that a dragon weapon would be good for flamelurker though).


This is such good news, I'm far too excited about this lol. I wonder what "developments" actually happened to make this possible.

To all you people recommending he levels up, maybe that's how he prefers to play.

It definitely is feasible, and makes it much easier to put money into weapon upgrades because you're not wasting souls on levels.

Also, Flamelurker does not do as much damage, but he is fast and intimidating. I think the most fun way to fight him is to not cheese it, go head on, and when you do finally beat him its a rush.
Armor Spider, however, is a different story. Blast that guy from the fog gate.
Wish my friends still played this game. My all time favorite PS3 game. Would really love a sequel set in the same universe.

In their defense, every time they try to close it, I'm sure the collective internet starts to play it again to relive it one last time. They see the spike, keep it on, then a month later it dies down again. Not really their fault.

What they SHOULD do is release the 6th world DLC.
