It is overall, but Dark Souls has a boss or two far worse than anything in Demon's Souls. Not because they're challenging; because they're cheap/relentless as all hell.
The Four Kings and Gwyn.
I can go toe to toe with any of Demon's Souls legions, but I loathe those two.

I've had way better duels in Demon's than Dark.
In 5-1 I had like a 30 minute duel going up and down ladders for better positioning and shooting eachother with arrows.
In 3-3 I've had pure duels where people don't grass a lot or just look for backstabs, one of them lasted like 15 minutes.
In 1-4 I had to protect someone who went AFK in the narrow crossing below the dragon.
I don't really have any memorable duels in Dark even though I've played it longer than Demon's.

Duke's I did mostly for co-op. The pvp I did there was nothing but mages looking for a OHKO with Homing Crystal Soulmass.

It's my favorite place to chase people down in. Reminds me of 4-1(non dueling version). Lots of normal duels in the shelving area(before the courtyard by the balcony), too.

How so?
I've played only single player so far (somewhere close to the end I think) and really enjoying the atmosphere, not sure how online would make it more fun.

Online is great. The fear you feel when being hunted, the joy when you gang up on a poor unsuspecting bp or defeat a boss in co-op, there's nothing like it.
Just picked this back up - I played through Dark Souls first and I'm going to give this another shot (got fed up with 3-1 a few years back and quit - now i'm trained and ready).
Anyone down for some co-op? I'm SL 13 and have only knocked out 1-1, 2-1, 3-1. Not really sure about the order I should go in. I'm thinking 4-1 or 1-2 next. Who's down? I don't really care what world.

Wow, you're basically in the same boat I am. Also coming from Dark Souls. I have about the same amount of completion and I don't really know what to do next. PSN is lionhart13.
BTW, does anyone know how to deal with item burden? I've missed out on a crap ton of items lately and feel like I have nothing I can get rid of.
Stockpile thomas? Raise endurance?
You are leaving extra stuff with Stockpile...right? Item burden has honestly never been an issue for me. I take the essentials for my character build and Thomas gets the rest.
Or throw on the Ring of Herculean Strength if you're in a pinch and don't want to leave a good item behind.
Talk to the NPC by the merchant in the nexus. You can deposit your items. Only take what you need before heading out. If you wanna join up throw down a sign in 4-1 spawn.
Ring of herculean strength. There's an item 'jade hair ornament' that you can give to stockpile thomas in the nexus if you talk to him in exchange for this ring. the item burden is really annoying but you get used to it.
I'll add both of you guys, I'll probably make a new character this weekend

Yeah. The only items I have are the consumable stuff, the upgrade materials, and whatever equipment I'm wearing.
the upgrade materials can actually add up to be a lot of weight. you can leave them with stockpile thomas and both blacksmiths will be able to use them still.
You can leave all the upgrade materials with Thomas. You don't need to have them on you when you talk with Ed or Boldwin. The material weight can add up and get really heavy, so I dump what I have with Thomas whenever I swing by the Nexus.
