Demon's Souls was released 5 years ago

defending myself re: Demon's Souls - the build at that TGS was -shocking- REALLY shocking.

i think you can check since that where i was, final release, going off like a spunky firework over how good it was

i dont see any differences to the final build.

It was such a breath of fresh air during last gen. I remember catching wind of it from GAF, found it on sale for like $15 and could no believe that this game was not hyped up more.

This is my game of the last generation. I still revisit it every few months and really hope this gets the HD update treatment (take my money!!).

That monster is noob trap, you can ignore him and pawn his ass later.

I remembered chipping his health with 200 arrows or so. Took almost 2 hours to take him down lol

Red eye knight was where I learned to get real good at backstabbing, even at level one (or whatever the default level is, I forget) you can take him out with a few backstabs as long as you interrupt his heal. I got real damn good at killing him and actually grinded some souls on him a few times before I got to places where it was faster.

I popped it in for the first time since 2009 because of this thread. I cannot believe what I can remember. I know the locations of all the items and secrets. My muscle memory is in tact.

The game is utterly brilliant. Probably the most important game of the gen for "hardcore" gamers. Just...

what would last gen have been without this game?

ugh

yep... & what would've become of this game without all us crazy importers? it very likely would've faded away into abyss...

y'all like dark souls? you're very welcome :) ...

To be fair, it did. They showed the game off realllllly poorly initially.

If you told me back then that it would become one of my favorite games of the generation there's no way I'd have believed it.

Same here.

The absolute biggest surprise of the generation for me.

And this is easily in my top 3 games of all time.

If someone had told me this back when some of the original previews came out, I would have laughed in their face.

Wait wait wait wait wait.

WAIT.

Hold the fuck on.

Are you seriously telling me...? Was the boss I just fought another player? Was that monk boss controlled by another player? Is this what just happened? Seriously?

This game, man. This fucking game.

The dude I had to fight against immediately spammed the magic spikes that shoot out of the floor as I left the white fog and killed me instantly.
Then I went offline and beat the AI with one hand behind my back. A shame really, I'm sure this must have been more fun to do around the game's release.

Should someone who has never played Demon's/Dark Souls start with Demon's Souls or just go right to Dark Souls?

Play Demon's First.

You can see the evolution of the gameplay.

After alot of introspection, I believe I like Demon's more than Dark, but by an extremely small amount.

Yeah i know but still i wanted to be in Garl's place so much more than the Old Monk...and i almost hated the developers for putting me in the position of having no choice but to kill him and Astraea.
Kinda the same thing happened in Dark with Crossbreed Priscila but at least then i had the option to not kill her and guess what...i didn't (fuck trophies and lame loot). My character was a Templar Knight who fighted for good (helped in online co-op and never killed any NPC that i didn't had to) so it would've been out of character if i attempted to kill her.I wish i had that option with Astraea as well even though i've heard some theories who say that she wasn't as good as many thought she was.Still for me she was a saint and Garl was the personification of dedication and honor.

Maybe one day i'll make a completely evil character in Demon's and Dark and kill every NPC (as well as invading other people) but that's not really the way i like to play these games.Or any game in fact. :/

You see, she wasn't.

From the wiki
It is said that Maiden Astraea discovered the truth about God’s existence - or lack thereof - and thus explains why she accepted the Soul of a Demon in order to ease the troubled abandoned. Hers is ironically referred to as the most impure Soul. Yet still, Garl will never leave her side.

She has a Demon's Soul and as such is an impure being. An EVIL character would let her live regardless of her actions.

As a Temple Knight you would be required and compelled to end the impure and corrupted.

</so ends my outright nerd post of the day>

This and Brad's hijinx with the game got me to finishing up my new Magician run I left alone. I did Latria. :O

Should I feel bad GAF that I bought this game in 2009, and have still neglected it?

Red Eye Knight has scared me off this game.

He is not what you seek, it is what he is guarding...

Remember, you drop SOULS upon death, not ITEMS. Suicide solution...

I'll be honest the one thing that still lures me in to this game is the story; or lack thereof as some say (I completely disagree).

The way it's told, and unfolds, is brilliant. The little things that help guide the information to the main character work so well. By the end of the game the Nexus feels like a small kingdom; a wealth of information and characters so unique but full of back-story.

The Monumental/hall of Monumentals is stil such a wild and eerie place to visit. Something so bizarre about that concept. The back-story alone is compelling to say the least.

As well as Astrae and Garl.

Naw you just changed your mind that's all. Then again, this game was never really suitable for previews.

Of course, by attempting something visually familiar yet mechanically unusual, the team risked alienating its audience at first touch. “When we first demo’d Demon’s Souls at the Tokyo Game Show it was nothing short of a disaster,” explains Kajii. “People were initially excited about the idea of a dark fantasy game, but they were so critical of the gameplay. Many people presumed we were still working on the combat at that stage of development, despite it being nearly finished! The truth is Demon’s Souls is just not well suited to previews, particularly at shows.

What? Was 1-1 really that great for you?

LOL what? You must mean utterly incredible level. (I kid, I kid)

Oh no, I'm deeper into Demon's Souls than the Old One is in the Nexus. I've consumed hundreds of hours of DS content and know a good amount about what happens throughout the entire game. I just haven't actually played it for more than a couple of hours myself.

I plan to remedy this soon.

Kinda bullshit, there were plenty of people that were skeptical but willing to give the game the benefit of the doubt since it held so much promise, I only pulled the most egregious examples.

It's ok to admit you were completely wrong about the game.

not at all - the frame rate was a mess and everything felt clunky beyond belief.

I admit i was wrong about the game and the final version is great, but that doesn't make the TGS build any less horrible that it was.

To just dig this up - i believe Wollan and a few others who were there and there was the curious case of variable performances on various PS3 titles - whether that is something to do with or not - i am not sure

Can I just say that I freaking love that Kappa-face. 'is all.

One of my best games of all time.

I just didn't understand what I had until I finally finished my 1st playthrough then realised I’d played greatness.

A game for those who have more spare time than your average person, or those who want to dip into 1 game for a stupid amount of time. And that's cool. Sadly, will never have the time or patience to bother.

Only game ive ever imported. I read a few reviews and all the talk of castles, skeleton knights, etc, was making me think of all those old Fighting Fantasy books i read as a kid, so i had the US version imported. Still have my copy of it, what a fuckin game

Get your skills up bro. I played through Demon's Souls in 30 hours and beat Dark Souls in 35 hours... nothing too long, but perfect and I was very slow - without guides.
That has nothing to do with spare time or anything like that... these games have warp points and short cuts so you don't have to do anything unnecessary.

Same experience/opinion for me. The thing though that really impresses me is that playing this again after logging countless hours in Dark Souls, is that it really doesn't feel like a "first attempt" at the gameplay.

It feels complete and fully realized, as opposed to the way coming back to say, Arkham Asylum after playing a lot of Arkham City you really notice a regression in the fluidity / complexity of the combat. I'm using this example not to rubbish Asylum -I know some folks believe it to be better game- just its a good example of how different combat can feel between sequels that retain notionally the same combat mechanics.

Never got to the last boss fight but I definitely got my money's worth. Playing co op with a friend using our 360s to chat was ridiculous.

I tried it, I was terrible and gave up.
Much later (last year) I bought Dark Souls on PC, loved it and after many tears I completed it.

Last night I started Demon's Souls, this time I'm ready.....

I could punch the stupid people, that told me that it was way too hard and unforgiving and cheap and all that. "The knight with red eyes killed my easily, how was I supposed to know that he was that strong herp derp". "The huge-ass dragon put me on fire, no marker told me that this would happen herp derp". I wasn't on GAF back then.

At some point I said: fuck it, it can't be that bad. And wow, just wow. One of the very few games that made my PS3 purchase worth it.

Sony should be punched in the face for not funding a Demon's Souls 2. Supporting core gamers my ass.

So many memories. Running across the bridge in 1-1with the dragon stands out for me, as does the tinkling of the mindflayer bells in the tower of latria.

This is the game that sold me on the ps3, my game of the generation, and one of my all time favorite games as well. It makes me somewhat sad to think the Souls games may never be this good again, but we'll see how Dark Souls 2 turns out.

Same for me; I knew very little about it until it suddenly started getting a rave reception, and everything I heard made it sound like some sort of dream game for me. After hearing that the chinese version was in English (although in retrospect the amount of engrish is hilarious compared to the properly translated one), I decided to import it and it lived up to all the hype. Actually, taking stuff like the brilliantly subtle lore into account it surpassed it.

Now I'm sad imagining this nightmarish alternative reality :( .

First time i saw Tower Knight it was the most startling boss ever. And it was the 1-2 stage boss!

I ask myself how i can deal with this shit?

One of the best all time, easily.

Heard about this game from my old roommate at the time shortly after it released since I had moved in with my PS3 (he only had a PC/360). If I remember correctly, he actually bought the game. After getting past 1-1, he was raving about the game already, so I decided to start up my own game and was immediately hooked. Definitely understood the King's Field lineage, but just a new take that was really polished.

Oh the hours spent on this game. Played so much that eventually the sounds of my many deaths became soothing to my girlfriend.

uhm, no. if you have enough time to play Ace Attorney games, you'll have enough time to play Souls.

I got this on PS+ too.

I honestly cannot see what the fuss is all about. Massive over-reaction on this game from GAF. I thought it was straight up boring.

Same. Gave Dark Souls a shot too but experienced pretty much the same thing. It's a weird game for so many people to suddenly obsess over. It reminds me of a less vibrant, slightly more up its own ass version of Monster Hunter.

On a related note, I'd really love it if the internet suddenly got obsessed with Monster Hunter. That'd at least be a fun game.

Stoping by just to say, fuck him and him. Fuck'em Both!

TOP 5 of the gen for me. The first time I got crushed by the Tower Knight will forever be on my mind.

It will be easier to find someone to give you one.
The pure bladestone drop rate might be the only thing I rate about this game.

EDIT: That and Maneater. Like I said before, FUUUUUUUUUCK him!

I hope this is parody. I imagine most people finish their first playthrough between 20-30 hours. No need to be angry that it's not for you.

That's what I mean. Finding someone is a pain in the ass atm.

I always kill one maneater through the fog gate with arrows. Cos I am a pussy

Bought it on a whim because of good reviews, but didn't really dig it at first. Played it for about 10-20 hours and just couldn't get into it - put it back on the shelf. Months go by and while browsing through my backlog I pick up this game, and wondered why I never went through with it. Put in the disc and for some reason I now was hooked - ended up finishing a new game+ too...then Dark Souls came out, double dipped PS3 and PC, 4 × new game+ insanity ensued en I still want to play it, but it won't display correctly on my recently bought 21:9 monitor, even with DSfix. I guess 4 times new game plus is enough.

Needless to say I'm anticipating Dark Souls II in agony, and since the PC version is coming later, a double dip is inevitable. The Souls series ruined my taste in gaming. Aside from the occasional game of BF4, NOTHING entertains me anymore, except for Souls. These games have cursed me..

I'd love to have a Demons Souls 2 for PS4. Hell, I'd even buy a definitive Version of Demons Souls 1.
