Dengeki interview Nomura: KH3 has removed reaction commands, no QTE.

When KINGDOM HEARTS III was presented at E3 2013, there was tremendous excitement. This E3, it looks like KINGDOM HEARTS III has been making several updates.

In regards to supplementing the gameplay, we have removed the Reaction Commands in KINGDOM HEARTS III. QTE (Quick Time Event. Actions that execute at the touch of a button according to when it displays on screen) isn’t there anymore. For people who have seen the “flashy” battles in KINGDOM HEARTS II, it felt like there were too many of them when doing these operations.

Are there no longer Reaction Commands in boss battles?

That’s right. While removing the elements of QTE in KINGDOM HEARTS III, being referred to as flashy battles, we are making it more challenging. All actions will be based on good or favorable timing.

Make me heartless if old.

KH2 actually did QTE's perfectly within action and battles - but I'm all for making it more user controlled.

That's too bad. I actually liked them on bosses where you had guard a certain attack to trigger a reaction command.

But the ones that would keep happening no matter what were the less interesting ones.

I don't recall my issues with KH2's battle system being related to the triangle button, that said the closer to KH1's battle system the better.

When I was young, I thought QTEs were the best thing ever, but now I'm just sitting here playing the remix, mashing triangle whenever I can't move in a boss fight.

Good decision.

Edit: to clarify, I hope we can pull off the cool action moves using abilities or commands or something. Just mapping everything to one button which not even based on timing (you can just mash it all the time), is not very fun, but my memory is foggy as I only just bought the remix yesterday and got up to the first Nobody boss battle with Roxas.

I agree with people on both sides. At first in KH2 I thought they were going to ruin the game but for the most part they worked well. But honestly I think the less QTEs the better, makes the game more fluid and makes battles less dependant on gimmicks or random moments you either try to make happen so you can win with that reaction command, or where you just wait for a moment for something to flash on screen.

But they looked cool. The final section of the game was so flashy. That final battle section within the dome of death lasers was just awesome.

They weren't that bad in KH2, and some were actually fun to do. But as someone who played BBS on a psp and had to fight Vanitas, thank you.

While the reaction commands were incredibly fun and rewarding in KH2,I whole heartedly welcome this change.

Its time for brand new gameplay in KH3.No need to retread reaction commands.

I kinda feel the QTEs in Kingdom hearts were some of the best implemented that I've seen; many of them were part of specific actions that you had to take and it added quite a bit of variety to boss fights, making them very varied and rewarding to actually get them/pull them off.

I still think QTEs mechanics will come back in some form, sort of like how the Luxord fight did it.

Great now all he needs to do is adding the Command Deck in and add a few shortcuts like in KH2, then we have the perfect Combat System. Coming to think of it, since KH2 we had no KH game where the console it first released on (no remixes) had four shoulder buttons. Circling through commands was the only weakness of that system (although it got somewhat manageable with the DPAD Left shortcut in KH 3D), being able to assign commands to L2+Face button would remove that weakness completely.

No, please. Give me modifiable magic and skills that modify attack properties, and bring back drive forms, but for the love of yensid, don't bring back the command deck.
