I just saw this pop up a month or so ago on Netflix as an "Original" series. Was wondering what the hell it was. Worth watching?

The first episode started a little slow but generated a nice momentum. The end got pretty sad and, admittedly, I cried.

Ricky's character is so ridiculous, not a fan of him so far at all. Sitting in the pudding, falling in the pond...jesus

Karl is surprisingly funny, you guys are right this show really should have him more front and center.

i thought it was pretty meh. i may watch anohter episode later but i'll probably be playing GTA V instead

Karl fucking steals every scene he is in. He is the real reason to watch this show more or less, Kerry Godliman does some pretty good work too but most scenes with Ricky are awful.

yup he's great, i didn't know he had it in him.

Watched the first episode with my wife. It was alright, she said Ricky Gervais' character is pretty accurate. She works in a similar facility.

The Duran Duran episode had me laughing pretty hard.

Wish the show had as much meat as The Office. The music montages in a couple episodes feel overdone and unnecessary.

Overall, I like it.

I love Derek, but I agree with the comments that Karl steals the show, he's just that good. I like how critics are saying it's "surprisingly heartfelt" for Gervais, like there weren't any of those moments in The Office or Extras.

Baffles me.

Especially because you could make the tiny argument that it's as if they took the most heartbreaking moments of Invention of Lying and expanded that out into a series.

Even if that Coldplay track has been used for every tear jerker moment ever, those final scenes still got to me.
kev was so human in the last episode, i love that character. i remember seeing a trailer or something for this a year back and thought it was going to be shit, but it really surprised me. i definitely recommend watching this show.

I'm 3 episodes in and I love it so far. I don't know if it's bias because I'm a nurse, but I think the setting is really well done. I'm really surprised by how much it gets to me emotionally.

I don't know if I would recommend it to someone for laughs, even if it does make me smile and occasionally chuckle, but if you like Karl Pilkington then this show features plenty Pilky being Pilky. Ricky even wrestles with him which is like something straight out of the podcasts.

Watched everything on Netflix, I really like it. Don't agree with the Ricky criticisms, I think his acting is incredible and he definitely carries the show. Karl is great too.

Coldplay memory montages may be a bit much though.

The people who say Ricky Gervais can't act haven't been paying attention. The dude has been a great actor since The Office. And no, he doesn't play the same character every time either.

The office is quite simply one of the greatest tv shows of all time and Ricky Gervais was stellar in it. Extras was amazing too. So how did the man who created those two shows come out with this horse manure? Looks like smerch was an important part of the equation.

People should give this one a chance. I was turned off a little at Gervais doing derek, initially, but my lord, what a show. Its so sincere and honest. Haven't seen anything like this in a while. It really was unlike anything I imagined. Gervais is talented, as we all know, but this just sealed the coffin, again.

I laughed, and cried, laughed some more, and cried again when the episodes ran out on Netflix.

First Class.

edit;

and yes, props to that whiny manc with a head like a fookin orange. Knocked it out of the park. Dear god boy...

So I'm officially hooked. I watched the last episode last night and was literally crying out loud. I wish more shows like this were made. Ricky is a genius and somehow sexy (not because of his character, because of his writing).

Unrelated, but I found it unintentionally hilarious that Ricky's been getting pretty fit lately. They do a good job with the costuming and posture to make Derek look pretty doughy, but in the scene he's running through the home naked it is clearly the physique of a man who gets a lot of exercise.

Finished it a few days ago. Loved it for the most part.

The last episode was tough. It was quite sad. You had Lizzie's death and her husband's story, then Derek and his dad, but the dark horse has to be Kev's interview. You can tell the guy had issues, but he was portrayed as comedic and you never really thought about him, but his interview was quite revealing in how messed up he is.

The one complaint I have is this need for the show to be overzealous in praising Derek. Occasionally, the mention and subsequent praise for him came out of nowhere. One example I can think of is Dougie's interview in the last episode: "If I was to come back as anybody, I'd come back as Derek." And it's not to say the praise isn't deserved, but it could've been put in better context. Maybe I'm not explaining myself properly, or I'm just reaching too far.

Ricky Gervais certainly carried the show. I didn't expect him to pull out some range for the role, but I didn't doubt he could act.

Agreed, the writing is a tad on the nose at points.

this was quite good. fucking karl pilkington was amazing. he was pretty much reciting his podcast quotes in a fictional setting as the straight guy and it was so good. the fucking wrestling bits with derek and dougie are straight out of those too lmao.

hannah is great and kev is pretty hilarious but good lord his character got extremely sad in the last episode. he just went completely sober with those last few scenes of his.

Watched the first episode, those accents are kind of rough, but I really liked it. Laughing one minute, crying tearing up, but not crying, the next. :p

I really dislike Gervais taking his "mong" character (watch him perform as Derek during his standup specials or back in his XFM days and tell me he wasn't mocking mentally challenged people) and shoehorning it into a serious drama. It feels so out of place. I enjoyed the pilot a lot, mainly because of Hannah, who is totally true to life and the heart of the show. I just wish Ricky would've written Derek with a bit more subtlety and completely divorced the Derek character from the retard impression he used to (still does?) do. In any case, it's a massive step up from Life's Too Short, which was utter trash. Still nowhere close to Extras or The Office.

We need a thread for 'Hello Ladies." I watched the pilot, and while it was a bit cliched at times and rehashed some of Steve's old material, I thought it was funny, well-shot, had some interesting character dyamics, and was well acted. I hope Steve is successful setting off on his own.

They're filming series 2 now:

I don't actually know why there has to be a season 2. The first season put a nice enough bow on everything, just seems like it's going to drag it out.

Kev's character background can get some meat I guess? Explore more about the home's financial troubles? Derek with his father?

I dunno, but it just seems we're going to quickly cover old ground in this show. It doesn't seem like the type of show that can do multi season scope.

Ricky said Kev has a "dramatic journey" in series two, so I guess they're going to expand on him. Like most of Ricky's shows I reckon this will be the last series then a Christmas special then done.

i will admit that I finally got curious about Kev as a character when he gave his speech in the season finale of Derek

I thought this show was fantastic and I owe watching it to the praise from this thread.

people giving Gervais shit about making fun of handicapped people clearly did not watch it.

Just watched this for the first time. Holy lord I loved it. Teared up in nearly every episode. Especially the last 5-7 minutes of the finale. I went in expecting just a straight-up comedy. Didn't know it was this emotional.

I wasn't a huge fan of Kevin at first. He was a little too over-the-top for my liking. But the last scene made me more interested in him. However, I don't like how quick that transformation from goofy to serious happened. Glad they're gonna flush out that character more next season.

I could not make it though a single episode of this show. Can't think of a reason I want to watch anything that takes place in a nursing home. I've seen too many people fade away in those sad places. I usually enjoy dark comedy, but this is just too much in my opinion.

It's like, the opposite of dark comedy. You seem like you couldn't have watched more than a couple minutes of the show.

It's not really a comedy, in my opinion. Despite Netflix putting it under the comedy section, I think it leans way more on the drama side than comedy. It's got some funny moments, but I wouldn't call it a comedy show. It's really endearing and heartwarming. You should try watching it again someday.
