How horrifying.
I'd be lying if I said that controller didn't look practical, albeit for a very specific type of game.

That's because one controller can't really fit everybody properly.I just returned my Elite. I was not a fan of it. Its an extra heavy controller that you can't grip properly without squeezing the paddles. This looks super weird, but none of the extensions would actually interfere with actually holding the controller properly.
MIAMI (CBS4) Sixteen-year-old Danny Lamarca is a student at Holmes Braddock Senior High School in Miami and like most teenage boys he loves playing video games and hes good at it too.
I got fourth place and two weeks later I got first, said Danny. But video games werent always a slam dunk for Danny.
I have a skin condition called Epidermolysis Bullosa and I was born with it, said Danny.
Its a hereditary condition which makes Dannys skin sensitive and blister easily. It also affected the size of his hands making him unable to play the games he loves.
Thats where his art teacher David Kotkin comes in. Danny confided to David how he longed to be able to use the X-Box his parents bought him.
I just said, Hey ya know Im working on something that I think can help you, said Kotkin.
David, a closet inventor, went to work. With Scotch tape, Popsicle sticks, super glue and strings, Kotkin created a new controller for Danny which made all the difference.
The strings help me reach the controls and triggers better, said Danny.
Kotkin named the controller The Avenger. It encases a standard X-Box controller and makes it possible to do more moves faster.

Isn't this the shit Ocean Marketing/Ocean Strategy whatever they are called where marketing? (Remember those guys?)
Oh and if you're not sure about their assault rifle FPS controller, have no fear; it is highly endorsed by The View and Piers Morgan Live:

That was a year after GAF first discussed the Avenger.Wow... I thought GAF would have better memory than this, considering how the Paul Christoforo debacle went super-viral back then. I mean, as a general rule Penny Arcade tends to inadvertently slashdot other sites, not themselves.
Tons of rear buttons.
Full keypad and trackball.
Yeah, that was hilarious. For anyone that doesn't know:

Can't believe its been 4 years!
I just did a Google search search for a controller with rear buttons an found this custom built masterpiece: the Keyball controller.
Tons of rear buttons.
Full keypad and trackball.
Put an analog stick on the left side and you'd have the perfect PC controller. Puts Valve's efforts to shame.

Ocean marketing said:you have no clue who I am .
Does anyone know a way to get 10% off one of these?

The point of the Steam controller was to make a controller that was an okay substitute without putting an entire keyboard and something crazy like a trackball on it, though. This is just a silly comparison.
Absolutely not.
Come on, the part about the Steam controller wasn't serious. The keypad has limited usefulness, and should be removed. But I do think that rear buttons, or more triggers is a better solution than sticking levers all over the thing. I like the idea of a trackball too, the ability to spin the ball should give it more control and versatility and control than a touchpad. The Steam controller exists to solve the problem that controller proudly exhibits.
Quality, cost, and the company's poor reputation. Are there legitimate criticisms of the product in practice (quality, functionality) or are all the responses here just mocking the bizarre looking design?
He sounds like a lovely person who must have failed English class (it was painful to read his email responses). And in case you're wondering who David Kotkin is, he made the Avenger controller.
Does anyone know a way to get 10% off one of these?
The ellipses in that engadget quote make me think that it originally read something like "it's not everyday [sic] that such and [sic] awkward looking gadget (is every bit as awkward to use. The sheer unwieldiness) blows us out of the water."![]()
They actually cited Wikipedia.
And in case you're wondering who David Kotkin is, he made the Avenger controller. There's even an old kickstarter he made in 2013.
I'll admit that I was a bit defensive, but that post was dry enough for me to think you were actually serious! The physical trackball is great, but in practice it actually DOESN'T have more versatility than Valve's solution. Pushing the trackball in as a button is out for instance. Well you could probably make some kind of cradle mechanism that the ball would sit and could be depressed but that would expensive, prone to breaking/needing to be cleaned, having a physical ball that could get lost/eaten, and the action of pressing a ball into the controller to get a second function probably won't be very comfortable. I have to give the guy props though!Come on, the part about the Steam controller wasn't serious. The keypad has limited usefulness, and should be removed.
