Destiny: House of Wolves DLC trailer

I'd strongly prefer a proper PvE arena mode to a raid, if I had to choose. It would need to have some flexibility built in for modifiers and variety in progression (ala Reach Firefight) to work, but if done right that would offer much greater replayability than a raid and would scratch a very different itch.

But by scratching a different itch, it would also mean lots of folks who prefer raids will be - understandably - upset.

It's already hilarious that they're really releasing this on the same day as Witcher 3.

If there's really no Raid...wow. Just wow.

The Arena is the Prison of Elders, where all the biggest and most dangerous members of the Fallen are imprisoned.

If this is really going to be a Colosseum styled area where we fight a bunch of bosses, I will be very curious how Bungie manages to elevate the fights to raid-level encounters. Most of the raid fights so far rely on having unique geometry and mechanics. If we're just sitting around on an open, flat battlefield that must mean they have to come up with really creative bosses.

Hurry up, Bungie! I want to play Destiny again.

Given how little their last "expansion" was, they should just do both a raid and a PvE arena. I was very optimistic about that expansion but quickly moved on to other games after beating it in a week (raid included). Just such a let down with such little content.

I feel like this could have been accomplished with the (hopefully better quality) story missions and matchmaking. That + a type of raid that we've come to expect would be a stellar holdover until Comet comes along.

I wonder what Bungie is hoping to accomplish to have no raid this time around; if they are trying to appease those who missed Firefight so much as a one-time scenario or if it speaks to something larger in what will happen in Comet.

I'm looking forward to having some fresh Destiny content soon, I've basically just been doing the Nightfall and raid on my 3 characters each week because there's not a whole lot to do besides just mindlessly doing activities, hoping that an exotic I need will drop.

Really hope the new weapons are cool, both from the raid and the exotics. The ones from Dark Below were kind of underwhelming, except for the Fang and Black Hammer.

Destiny's combat is definitely good enough to support an arena style game mode tbh. Best thing about the game by a long shot.

Just a reminder that as of right now PSN is showing that only 19.7% of Destiny players have completed a Raid. So as awesome as we all think they are, they are not utilized by the entirety of the population.

I think I'd actually be okay with losing a Raid this expansion in favor of a new gametype with one clause: Existing raids (and their gear) need to be brought up to level cap, or given purpose again.

+1. It's not going to save the game from a dramatic drop in users once summer hits, but if they manage to use this expansion to beef the game up with a Mass Effect 3 horde mode and a consistent rotation of Iron Banner, Queen's Wrath, Trial of Osiris, maybe it will live long enough to see its entire plan of dlcs to its own end.
There's no way they are going to be able to "steal" another thirty dollars from people for another season pass. I'm starting to be a bit sceptical that we are going to see additional dlcs after Comet.

I really hope so but some how with how things have gone so far I don't think they will have I've put so much time into this game I might just be at the end of it

It's a good thing you aren't designing this game. Because every other fight in the single player is just that.

Sounds like the Reef will be an actual location? doesn't that go agains't the leaked info from a while ago?

Also kinda interested in why they portray the fallen in a snow area with a blizzard going on, doesn't match any of the current places in the game. Old russia has a bit of snow, but nothing like that.

Really want a proper overview of what will be in the dlc, could be a good indicator for how much they're actually willing to listen and respond to feedback/criticism

The lore in the Grimoire is pretty awesome. Unfortunately, the game proper only barely begins to hint at any of it.

Still haven't even bothered to go through those because you can't do it in the game. I'd love to read about the backstory from some of the guns like Red Death since their tag lines hint at some really cool lore.

TDB had more Playstation exclusive content. I wonder what they have up their sleeves this time.

Playstation: Actual House of Wolves Content
Xbone: A virus that infects your xbox removing all installed software, a bill in the mail for $1400 and a kicker-gram that sends an NFL kicker to your house to literally kick you in the balls

The dark below had that cool looking pool in the trailer and we got nothing like :/

I hope it is like the trailer as that would be bad ass

About what I'm expecting.

edit: Isn't all the Playstation exclusive content only for 1 year? Good news, only 5 more months!

Demons Souls's completion rate is currently sitting below 20% too.

20% of what anounts to endgame completion is actually fairly surprising. That also falls in line with most trophies for completing a (long) game.

The Order, a game that was criticized for being on rails and also being a 6-7 hour movie, is at under 40% completion.

Less than 10% have completed Transistor, a 6-7 hour game I adored.

You'd think after those The Dark Below reviews, they'd try to add in a raid alongside the arena mode to keep people happy or exceed people's expectations of lack of content.

When the most praised feature of a game is the mechanics heavy encounter that is the raid, moving to a mechanic-less modifier horde mode instead seems like a huge step back. Maybe somehow it'll capture some of the ODST/Reach firefight magic though!

I'd be willing to bet that most copies of House of Wolves have already been paid for. Thus anything decent could be cut from How and put into the comet in an effort to get players to actually spend money again.

True. Guess that's one of the benefits of not being dependent on a subscription model.

As someone trying to find a reason to mess around in Destiny again, the thought of playing the same strikes +2 and another raid for months is not appealing.

No, not as I described it. The game is indeed filled with siege / wave based battles, which play out in an identical fashion each time. But I was describing a mode where we specifically do not play through the same identical waves of enemies each time, and where modifiers like we see in the weekly heroic and Nightfall strikes are rotating in the mix. Preferably by toggling and changing as the waves progress.

Bungie has built this in a prior game (Firefigtht, in particular its Reach variant) so they know what it would take to make it replayable.

I'd play the living hell out of a proper - emphasis on proper - Firefight mode for Destiny. If it's the exact same progression every time, as strikes and story missions are, then I wil be greatly disappointed. That would rather undercut the whole point of a different game mode.

So something to note. If the Arena is some kind of Firefight setup, and if all the enemy races are possible opponents. It will be the only destination in the game that actually has more than 2 types of opponents in one destination at a time.

In other words: Holy crap give me a new location to fight some Cabal.

If that is true, I hope those modifiers are place holders, or else that "Raid" can go suck a bag of dicks. I don't dig the idea of going into horde mode against a bunch of invisible vandals that are gonna 1 shot an entire team....

On the more cheery side of things, I think this is a good opportunity for Bungie to branch out into different forms of end game content. I think the general consensus is that the Raids are the go to content for the end of the game. Bungie has developed an event that, while most of the player base sadly hasn't done or completed, the majority of the end game community deems one of the best things about Destiny. I say give them the benefit of the doubt that if this is a horde mode type Raid that it too can be a fun and refreshing event. One thing I would like to see is a final boss that doesn't just stand in one position for a long time and that you can get nowhere near unless you want it to stomp a mud hole in your chest and walk it dry. These types of bosses are bland creatures, it's almost like looking at them in a zoo. This is a particularly relevant analogy as everyone stands behind the glass at Crota and waves to him. Give me something that doesn't wind up making everyone stand in one spot and shoot at big dingleberry of a boss, Bungie!

I'm actually kind of hyped for this. I've always wanted to know more about the Awoken Queen.

The Fallen are a more interesting enemy than the Hive are IMO, so I was always looking forward to HoW more than TDB. I just like their whole hiearchy with the servitors being pseudo-gods, etc. Destiny has some pretty cool lore underneath it all but they do a poor job of capitalizing on it in-game.

The horde mode could also require a reasonable amount of teamwork by chaining supers...or using bubbles during " no health regen" waves....

Or needing an invisi hunter to sneak behind a wave to capture a chalice or something.

Make the map simple (and so uncheesable) but try to steer teams into complex tactics..m

Please take a chance and visit the DestinyGAF community over in Gaming Off-Topic. Lots of people who would be willing to get you through a raid, mic or no mic. Most of my 80 or so friends are from there.

Thanks, but I've kind of moved on. My limited gaming time is mostly spent on Bloodborne - also I'm in New Zealand so time zones and latency are a problem.
