Destiny makes $500 million in first 24 hours

This would only make sense if you randomly decided Halo won't move consoles anymore. Halo 3 and reach both moved significant consoles. Halo 4 did a little bit as well but not as much since the install base was already big. This however is the start of a new generation and you don't think Halo 5 won't have as big of a marketing campaign, but managed and sell more?

How much do you expect Halo to sell? It will sell very well especially compared to the Xbox One userbase when it comes out but Destiny will still most likely outsell it.

Halo 5 is coming after Halo 4, a game which many Halo fans had mixed reactions to. On top of that, it's on a lower selling system. To put it in perspective, Call of Duty does more on Xbox than Halo does. It isn't crazy to think that Destiny would too.

Fuck you Kotdick. Reading this name close to Bungie makes me sad.
Good for them though i guess, they seem to have a lot of faith in the game.

No guys, I don't think Microsoft are crying at all, because majority of these Destiny copies were sold in a bundle with a PS4 and Xbone.....

Oh my....

I don't think you're correct on your suggestion that the majority of copies were in a bundle, but they certainly did ship plenty of Destiny bundles. I wonder how/if they're factoring that into that number. If they're factoring the bundle price in it would make the entire number even more useless than it already is. A mere 500,000 PS4 bundles alone would have an MSRP of $225,000,000.

All that needs to be said. Halo 5 with all of its pomp and circumstance isn't going to magically sell more copies then a multiplatform game with a marketing deal for the top selling current gen system.

Fuck me. How many PS4's did this sell?

Unbelievable. And nobody even knows if it will review well or not... Although thats moot at this point.

For a late anecdotal reply - PS4s are completely sold out in pretty much every Gamestop in my district. Xbones are getting low too between people wanting to jump in on current-gen destiny + MS' free game promo, but yeah. This release was great for both companies sales wise (Definitely a strong edge to the PS4 though)

Am I the only one who really dislikes destiny here? I played wow, Diablo, Starcraft
; mass effect, Mario, etc...and own like every console since n64, and destiny sucks for me since alpha. Grind fest with unimaginative story and even worse dialogue, with shadowfall floaty controls, and laggy aiming combined with 30 fps multiplayer (and single-player ofc), anticlimactic ghost companion, and supposed 10 year lifespan of those same things. Imp this game will have the same lifespan of titanfall which I stopped playing after week 3. I don't mean to piss off ppl reading this, and those who like it, but I don't get this game and why is it so popular. Ffs local radio station in my backwards eastern eu country reported on destiny. I just don't fucking see it and it posses me off.

Typing on a tablet is such bitch.

That's less than GTAV, right? ($800m in 24h, if I recall)

Way, way, way less than GTA5. GTA5 was sell-through. That means consumer goes to store and buys it. Destiny's number is sell-in. That number just means they had $500million of Destiny on store shelves/backrooms in the first 24 hours. In other words in the same time frame, 1.6 copies of GTA5 were sold to an actual consumer for every single copy of Destiny that was even shipped! Destiny's number is half of what CoD: Ghosts did, less than what half of CoD: Black Ops did, etc. I posted links to exact information a few moments ago. It's kind of frustrating seeing a thread like this with people acting a certain way exclusively due being misled by the figure - which is exactly what it was intended to do. Ignorance isn't bliss in my opinion.

That is huge. Good on Bungie for making a fun game. Good for Activision since they made a smart investment on publishing this game.

Everyone on my friends list was playing it last night on PSN. This game is probably going to do massive numbers.

Activision taking over the world.

How foolish does Microsoft look now for allowing their relationship with Bungie to deteriorate to such a point to lose them as a 1st party. Probably Microsoft's biggest blunder since joining the console market (yes, maybe even bigger than rrod and drm gate).

I can hear the champagne popping from here.

Seriously, I'm so near buying the game, loved the alpha but I'm waiting for reviews.

Assuming Destiny sold about 15m, Halo 5 would have to sell 10 million consoles (twice of current known xbone sales) with a 100% attach rate, which is insane.

I mean the potential of the game was massively held back by last-gen consoles, but from a business standpoint it seems like it was the correct call.

gg to Kotick. The guy is just great at his job.

Everyone calling Activision idiots for spending $500 million on an "unproven game" look so stupid right now. GameFAQs is imploding lol.

A very impressive number, but remember:

This was sold to retail, not to customer.

Remember that Activision does not get 60$ for 60$ game. There has been many estimates on the breakdown of 60$ game, but most reliable number has been around 27$ per copy to the publisher -so less than half of the retail price, once the game is sold to a consumer.

Once we learn what the actual sell-through of Destiny is, we will know how close to the fabled 500M$ Activision is.

I just reread that article and it seems to be implying that retailers can return unsold merchandise at cost. If this is indeed the case then trumpeting out "sold-in" is even scummier than I thought. Can anybody chime in on this issue one way or the other?

good day for marketing, and a good day for bungie ofc, good on them. and i dont wanna be a downer or anything, but a bad bad day for gamers in the long run.

You realize that you can use basic math to show Halo 5 won't sell as much right?

XB1 has sold ww so far about 5 million consoles, and that was with a massively front loaded launch. But still, lets be charitable, and lets say by fall 2015 when Halo 5 comes out the Xb1 has sold 10 million.

Destiny is probably gonna sell around 10 million (thats a VERY conservative estimate). For Halo 5 to be as successful, it would need to have a 100% attach rate, literally every one who buys an XB1 needs to buy Halo 5.

Even Halo 2, the highest selling, only sold 6 million. Thats only a ~30% attach rate for the number of Original Xbox sold.

These 24 hours sold-in numbers are meaningless. The companies know exactly how many copies they are delivering to stores weeks in advance. They could have made this announcement last week.

Why do people think Halo 5 won't be a bigger launch?

Also Activision were are the day one destiny sales?

Like EA and Square-Enix, Activision generally doesn't give sales numbers right away. They prefer to deal in revenue until a later date.

Also, Halo 5 probably won't be a bigger launch because it's on one system instead of four. Same reason Halo 4 wasn't a bigger launch than Black Ops 2.

And with the low install base on XOne, Halo not being as big anymore with many people, Halo 5 will probably be the worst selling Halo title to date.

That and Halo 4 seems to have lacked so much replayability that it might have killed a lot of sales for the next Halo title.

Is this the best selling new IP ever debuted? No reviews and good word of mouth must push this sales a mile ahead. Congrats...

How do you figure? The game is fun as hell, I spent 12 hours playing yesterday.

The beta thing was brilliant. Destiny is one of those games you can't really get your head around until you actually play it. I spent way too much time on the beta, and preordered as a result. Game really wasn't on my radar.

Not sure how MS feel now. From the ugly break up in 2007, MS had a chance to keep Bungie with them if they gave Bungie more freedom, allowing them to make any game they wanted instead of Halos years after years. If Destiny is tied to MS consoles, it could be a franchise that single-handedly makes Xbone more competitive or even surpass PS4.
