I'm thinking of buying a used 60GB Playstation 3 locally (not sure if this is a good idea). Is there a way to externally identify what version a PS3 is? I think I can rule out the 20 and 40 if it has 4 USB ports and a flash card reader, but not the 80. Are the different versions segmented into different serial number prefixes? Is there text somewhere on the bottom that tells you? And where should I look when the system is plugged in? I'm trying to be as paranoid as I can with this.

It says "60GB" on the box. It'll be tough to find them in stores, I'd expect.

Original 60GB should have CECH-A00 in the serial number.

Stuff easy to identify :

20GB : no card reader, 4 USB
60GB : card reader, 4 USB
40GB : no card reader, 2 USB


80GB : card reader, 4 USB. Now the trick would be differenciating the 80GB from the 60GB. If you can test it, just check the HDD siez in the XMB.

But yeah, if it's got the chrome lining, card readers and a WiFi icon next to the 4 USB ports, then it's a 60GB.

The HD can be replaced, right? So there's no guarantee that the Emotion Engine is there even if it says 60GB.

I thought some 80gb are 65nm, the chart says otherwise. I guess I was wrong.

I was thinking of selling my 60gb in favor of the MGS4 bundle... but the lack of 65nm means theres really no reason to.

My 60GB PAL has the SACD logo printed on the console. The lower PS3 on Goldrusher's photo comparison is probably a 40GB unit.

The BC in the 80Gb is pretty damned good (finished GOW2 finally a few days ago on my EU model). Unless you have some game it specifically won't run, I wouldn't be too worried which model you end up with.

well it's easy to know if it's 60GB or 40GB ( 2USbs+no chrome ) but between 60GB and 80GB try the serial number
