Deus Ex: HR's PC Preview Build version has leaked

Lostconfused said:
No. The difference is that a developer build of Crysis 2 leaked while only a preview build of Human Revolution is out there. Either way it's silly that people are acting as if OP exaggerated or is being sensationalist.

You are equating the developer leak of Crysis 2 with the leak of a preview build of Deus Ex 3. The former is the full game with more bugs and less features, while the latter is aimed at the press and only 1/3 of the game. Surely you cannot claim that these two leaks are equal in terms of what has been leaked and what the ramifications are. There is a difference and you are neglecting it by equalling the two types of leaks.

When I posted it, the only information I could see was that it leaked. I edited it as soon as I found out it was only a preview build. I'm not trying to exaggerate or sensationalize anything. A mod has to change the thread title.

Don't worry, Clevinger. People are either jumping the gun on your title or wanting to avoid misunderstandings for future readers of the topic. You have clarified in the OP, that's the most you can do.

Lostconfused said:
If you want to interpret the words PC version as a full retail build than that's up to you.

Who the hell wouldn't?

And to everyone else: I'm only taking issue with this guy I'm quoting. The OP simply worked with the information he had, so it's not like he was purposely being disingenuous.

Ten hours or one-third is still a massive chunk of the game... wow this sucks. You can tell they put a ton of time and effort into it. Probably a few years?

They've been working on it since 2007, I believe.

Clearly not. Since I did state that one is a preview build and the other one is a working developer build. My point was that in both cases people have tried to downplay the significance of the leak by saying that it isn't a retail version, that the build is months old, that it doesn't have all the features and similar statements.

No idea why you're defending the laughably misleading topic title.
I am not defending it. I just find your over reaction ridiculous.

Even if this is not the full game this is still pretty bad. The game seems to be cool. At least way better than the abomination Deus Ex 2. These devs really don't deserve this.

Ok well still nobody has been able to explain why it is "bad."

I'm glad the game has leaked; if companies aren't going to release demos then gamers will make their own.

If they've actually made a worthwhile successor to Deus Ex then there's nothing to fear, the people will be begging for more after they play it.

Because people will download it and say I have had my "fill" and I do not need the full game anymore? + leaks will always happen but this far out is pretty bad.

it's still technically piracy so tread carefully

That's unsubstantiated conjecture. Are there any real reasons that aren't baseless speculation, preferably with testimony from a developer this has happened to in the past?

Steam games can be cracked, but not before release. That's the main draw of DRM, to prevent pre-release piracy since that hurts a lot more. People may beat the game before it comes out and not buy it, they may tell people the game is buggy (possibly due to the crack) and discourage buyers, etc.

As long as the game doesn't leak before release, publishers are happy.

I wonder what happens when you get to the end of the preview. Does it just display "Thank you for playing the Preview Build, game comes out August"

huh?

The game is months away from a release, so you have no idea if there will be a demo.

Secondly, are you honestly suggesting that pirating and leaking preview builds is justifiable cause in the absence of a demo? Really?

People share region specific XBL and PSN demos all the time. Are you telling me we shouldn't share this because we don't have plastic rimmed glasses and gaming blogs? It's a preview. Journies have played it. They're not special. This material is meant to provide people with an impression of the game.

Which demos are 10 hours long? Other than Witcher 1 demo which is supposedly pretty ong.

Press demos. Which aren't special exemptions from being demos. Unless of course you look at the gaming press as beings of an elevated state.

A lot of people are probably going to be basing their decision of whether or not to buy the game based on a version that was never supposed to be shown to the public.

Seriously, have all gamers become this obnoxious ?

Yup! The Art Director or Art Lead (whose name I have forgotten), was interviewed in a recent PC Gamer UK podcast, and he said they started in 2007. He sounded like a cool guy and had a lot of interesting things to say.

not the full game?

not a huge deal then

even pirates would hesitate to waste ten hours on something that cuts off

No, gamers aren't going to make their own. When the hell has a community ever created a demo for a game? That's certainly not what's happening here. Some asshole breached an agreement and illegal uploaded game data of an unfinished product to the public.

As much as I would like to play this "preview build", it's still really bad news for the developer and the future of game coverage for Eidos stuff.

Yet is quite a bit longer than any expected demo and received nothing but gushing reports from previewers, and "a lot of people are probably" is very vague, I question how you know what "a lot of people" are "probably" going to do. I know personally I will not make a decision based upon it.

I am pretty sure that publishers don't want press material to be released to the general public in an uncontrolled format. So the answer is yes. Because the demo did leak.

Isn't it a finished preview build?

This is silly. People share console demos all the time.

It still isn't piracy. It's a demo.

Who are they giving preview builds that's so sketchy he uploads it for the internet? Probably one of those blog sites, so they can then report on the leak and get more hits.

What are the chances that a reviewer/press leaked it?

I just hope its not a hacker, since Ive been really open about my possession of the preview, making me a relatively easy target.. but lets assume its just a punk ass journalist who doesnt respect the developers

kamspy said:
Are the press really that special in your heart? They can play this preview, but if we do it's piracy?
oh i don't give a shit, it's just amusing to see people argue about the differences between preview builds and demos

kamspy said:

Press probably signed a contract that they're not allowed to share the preview build code with the public. Legally, we don't have authorization to play the preview build I'm guessing.

Then again, legally there's probably nothing they can do.

Okay, I was going to download, but the remorse of insulting the developers hard work, getting the game spoiled, and probably be pursued by Eidos made me not do it.

If I accessed the site where you supposedly downloaded the preview build, is that a crime?

I do not think *legally* there is any difference between playing this demo and reading the MW3 Kotaku story and viewing the screenshots, etc. when they leaked. There is no license agreement being broken or circumvented here.

Of course it is. Isn't that glaringly obvious? We live in a time where the big publishers would love nothing more than to foist another piece of shovelware onto an unsuspecting or naive gamer for the full retail price.

I'm sorry, but do you own stock in them? Why are you so emotionally invested in this?

This is the best possible thing that could have happened. If they made a great game, it will build more hype for the real release. If they made a bad game then justice will have been served.

Yes, you are already dead.
