Deus Ex: HR's PC Preview Build version has leaked

So, after a few hours with this leak, I finally decided to go back and give the original Deus Ex an earnest chance. I've had it on Steam for a couple of years now, but always quit a few minutes into the game because I tried to handle it like a conventional shooter. This time I took computer, electronics, and lockpicking skills, and decided to go for a more stealthy, non-lethal (when possible approach), so I grabbed the crossbow from Paul and set out into Liberty island. I figured I'd only play for a few minutes before bed, but the next time I looked at the clock three hours had passed!

Wow! This game is amazingly engrossing if you only give it a chance. They world they built is extremely interesting to me, and I love how open-ended this gameplay is. I'm really glad I finally came back and gave it a real chance. I think I'll be playing through this a few times before Human Revolution hits.
Deus Ex ensnares another one.

Soon comes that sad realization of what was lost to gaming when they fucked up the sequel and the gameplay ideas never much influenced other games.

So it's okay to download this? Awesome, would love to see how the pad support is and how well it runs on my 4890 (even though it's likely unoptimised).

System Shock and Deus Ex were supposed to catapult FPS design to a new level.

What the fuck happened?

Anyone else have insanely long load times? Like 30-60 seconds for leaving and entering buildings, and loading save games? Dammit I wish there was a quick-save.

They didn't sell all that well? Or devs realized that it's not easy to make a game like that? Both?

Troika is one of the few who tried but Vampire - Bloodlines bombed extra hard.

Honestly, I doubt we'd be getting something like Human Revolution if it wasn't for Bioshock's success.

Activision sent it to die, same release day as half life 2. It didn't stand a chance.

Press F5?

Load times are usually dealt with at the end when polishing and such. This was not meant for the public remember.

There's probably a lot of debug code in the build, which would slow down the loading times too.

They don't get better when you move the game to a SSD, so it can't actually be using all of that time to access data, I don't think.

From the buglist, I understood that its mostly a streaming problem an is likely to improve. PC-loadtimes are no where near as bad as 360 though, which easily required a few minutes (due to DVD, will be fixed in final!)

Eastern Europe hasn't embraced the CoD mantra that heavily (knock on wood). A series like STALKER is heavily influenced by Deus Ex's design sensibilities.

Numerous websites reported long load times, it's most likely just a thing in this build that hasn't been fixed for a mass audience.
Pretty sure its because most of the game is packed away in two separate, 2GB and 1GB, files.

Edit: Or at least that's my guess.

Pad support is excellent (although you have to use KB to open the inventory at the moment) - gives me great hope for the console versions, as I only played in TV-HD resolutions with normalish quality gfx, and it ran brilliantly. It's got some auto-aim (toggleable) with a pad, but it's actually useful - felt natural. All the menus (dialogue, hacking) worked well with it as well. I played it for an hour then stopped. It's great. It's really great.

Not the case if you use a 360 controller which is fully compatible. Hitting the [back] button will open the inventory.

Played the beta with a 360 controller, chose Normal difficulty and switched off highlighting from the get go.

Other than some awful character designs (WTF is up with Jensen's head? Maybe I shouldn't expect much from a beta...) and animations, I had a blast. Detroit was awesome and every single side-quest was fun to do, especially since they mostly tie-up with the main story. The cover system was excellent too and the smoothness of moving between covers was pretty impressive. The soundtrack is superb and remixes of old tracks always seem to come at the right moment.

Stuff like one button takedowns, a 3rd-preson cover system and sure-hit headshots may not please some hardcore Deus Ex fans, but I sure loved these additions.

IW is a good game. It's a crappy, dumbed-down sequel to DX1, but it's not the trash people make it out to be.

I will never understand why some people overvalue IPs like they do in this hobby.
No, it was just a bad game. The fact that it was the next Deus Ex game, and developed largely by the same guys, made it criminal.

God that boss fight at the end was terrible. Boss fights are antiquated and shitty to begin with, but this one doubly so because the final cutscene shows him all bloodied up and dying even if you used nonlethal weapons. Kind of contrary to the feel of the rest of the game.

But overall it feels like a truly amazing experience. I'm so pumped to play it, it really echoes the design of the original Deus Ex in some great ways.

I loved going through every email in the game and just uncovering conspiracy after conspiracy, and implication after implication. It was fantastic. My only gripe about stuff like that is that all the ebooks were silly throwaway pamphlets by in-universe characters, instead of actual literature like The Man Who was Thursday et al in DX1.

Before I played this preview, I thought this game was going to be terrible and I was extremely cynical about it. Presently, I have the game preordered and a raging boner I don't know what to do with.

Good work, Eidos Montreal.

The worst part of that boss fight for me was how cliched the whole setup was.
You finally reach your goal, which feels like your capturing the main villain (while deep down inside you know some shit'll go down and there's no way in hell you'll actually catch him). Barrett appears behind you out of nowhere, like he knew all along you were coming. Big boss asks small-time boss (Barrett) to finish you off while he escapes to another castle...

God damn! I'm growing sick of bullshit like that. The fight itself wasn't bad at all though. Especially since I finally used some of those guns I've been collecting and upgrading for such occasion.

Who cares. They are just errand boys with no personality. When you face down Navarre or Gunther it at least matters to you because you know those characters.

Similar to my thoughts. Which honestly can be encapsulated in this

It's a full on spooky ghost!

The pre-rendered video's and takedown animations were a bad choice. The assets are too low poly and most of the environmental detail and objects do not even react to gunfire, soda cans are glued to the floor. Good job Montreal.

On a positive note, the soundtrack to this game is great. Very introspective stuff, in my opinion. I wish there were more soundtracks like this.

I pre-ordered through Game.co.uk awhile ago to avoid splintered pre-order bonuses. I'm thinking about getting a Steam copy, because after playing this preview version, the wait is going to be unbearable when the game releases.

Run the Win 7 exe, the other doesn't work as far as I know.
When i run either it says, "fmodex.dll is missing". i had a rar file that extracted as an iso file, and another rar file with a mixture of items including the Win7 exe. everything has been extracted to the same folder. i even tried mounting the iso, but it seems to have another rar file inside it...which gives me another error if it try to mess with it. i'm confused. maybe i got the wrong file.

PMing you.

Taking a stealth approach and evading guards is very satisfying. The presence of alternate routes in just about every room makes this game a much more satisfying stealth experience than Conviction.

If there's one thing I'd like them to change, it's the peripheral vision for the enemies, or the lack of it. Currently it functions the same way Chaos Theory did, in that enemies can be knocked out by hiding behind a corner and luring them.

Did anyone actually find a power source when you got to the electric current near the Police Station? I looked for like 20 minutes straight but couldn't find any.

No, I couldn't either. I suspected it might have been in the sewers directly below, or simply a problem with this build. Or maybe you need certain augs to get through there. I just piled up some dumpsters below the fence nearby and hopped over.

I didn't think it was OK to talk about stolen software on Neogaf?

Edit; Oh, I didn't realize Eidos said it was OK to talk about it. That's kind of cool of them, I guess? Valid arguments can go both ways I guess. I admit I tried it too and was very positively overwhelmed by the atmosphere and presentation. Just checked out the first two cut scenes, and looked at my partner's computer "hey, stop reading my e-mails".

It was always a day 1 purchase for me, but still feels weird to try out preview code that was stolen from their servers. I guess they are doing the best they can by trying to turn it into positive publicity. Shows confidence in their game.

I don't know how buggy it is. I am sure they're going through a list of bugs before it goes gold.

Its actually hidden between the electrical field. Grab two crates and use them to cross it, then turn of the power.

Pretty sure it was copied off of a journalist's hard drive.. it was distributed to journalists via Steam.. one of them obviously decided it was so awesome that he or she was going to share it with somebody.

I've gotten at least 10 hours out of this version and I'm not even done with it.. I've been exploring every nook and cranny and re-loading saves when I'm not satisfied with my performance.

If this is only 1/3 of the game and the other areas are as detailed as this, i'm going to be busy for a very long time.

Question about everyone's experience in the police station.. may be a bit of a spoiler..

Anyone figure out how to break into the weapons vault? There doesn't seem to be a security pad.. I tried hacking the computer in the room, but it's level 3 and if I'm detected the alarm for the whole building goes off

Another plot spoiler for the outcome of the first mission -

I let the terrorist leader go in the interest of saving the hostages.. after I completed a couple of side quests..

I got a call from Pritchard saying that I really needed to give people a more direct way to contact me and that he wasn't my personal answering service.. turns out it was Zeke.. he had found something on the guy that set him up.. a data pad with usernames and passwords and an access code, but no employer name.

Thought that was really cool

Missions seemed to be numbered. I have S1 and S3(and so on). Where do I find S2?

S is for Sidequest, M is for Mission. Each new sidequest you get is labelled S-N, where N is the number of sidequests you have found up to and including that one. Ergo, the first one you come across is S-1, then S-2, then S-3...

If you can't see S2 on your map with a marker, then you have already finished it, OR there is an ambiguous objective with no map marker go along with it. To work out which, go to the quest page, then click "Completed quests". It will give you a list, complete with the S-N number of each (iirc).

Is there a way to increase the fov and to have the same sensitivity on both mouse axes?

I'm getting a headache after 5min and can't aim :/
